The truck stops.

Engine dies.

Silence.

You sit.

Hands on the wheel.

Cold.

You look at the rearview.

Empty.

He is gone.

Not dead.

Just gone.

Like smoke.

Like a lie.

You remember the morning.

The coffee.

Black.

Bitter.

He sat across from you.

Eating toast.

Silence.

You wanted to speak.

Throat tight.

Words stuck.

He knew.

You knew he knew.

He stood up.

Packed his bag.

One bag.

Small.

Light.

He looked at you.

Eyes tired.

Eyes kind.

He did not say goodbye.

He did not have to.

You let him go.

You should have stopped him.

You did not.

Why?

Fear.

Duty.

Pride.

You locked the door.

Started the truck.

Drove.

North.

Away.

The road is long.

Straight.

Gray.

Wind hits the glass.

Hard.

You feel it.

In your bones.

In your teeth.

In the hollow of your chest.

The landscape changes.

Green to brown.

Trees to rocks.

Sky to dust.

You drive.

Hours.

Days.

You do not stop.

You do not sleep.

You drink water.

You eat crackers.

You think.

Of the mission.

The order.

The target.

It was simple.

Clean.

A line in the sand.

He was on the other side.

You were on this side.

Clear.

Right?

Wrong.

It was never clear.

It was never right.

You remember the face.

The target.

Young.

Scared.

Just a boy.

You did not kill him.

You warned him.

He ran.

You let him run.

That was the betrayal.

Not to him.

To them.

To the chain.

To the system.

To the law.

You broke the code.

You chose life.

Over duty.

Over order.

Over self.

And they will come.

They always come.

Not with guns.

With paper.

With words.

With silence.

They will strip your rank.

Your name.

Your past.

You will be no one.

A ghost.

A mistake.

You smile.

Small.

Sad.

It does not matter.

The road is yours.

The sky is yours.

The wind is yours.

You are free.

Or are you?

The truck rattles.

A rock hits the undercarriage.

Clang.

Loud.

You check the mirrors.

Nothing.

Just road.

Just dust.

You drive.

The sun sets.

Blood in the sky.

You pull over.

Engine off.

Darkness.

Stars.

Millions.

Bright.

Cold.

You step out.

Legs weak.

You lean on the door.

Look up.

The stars do not care.

The stars do not judge.

They just are.

You feel small.

Good.

You should feel small.

You were big.

Big and heavy.

Big and sure.

Now you are small.

Light.

Empty.

You take a breath.

Air tastes of dust.

Of dry grass.

Of freedom.

You walk to the edge of the cliff.

The wind is strong.

It pulls at your coat.

You look down.

Dark.

Deep.

You think of him.

Your friend.

Your brother.

He is out there.

Somewhere.

Alive.

Free.

Like you.

You raise your hand.

Wave.

To the dark.

To the wind.

To the ghost of him.

You let go.

Not of your life.

Of your weight.

Of your guilt.

Of your fear.

You let it go.

It falls.

Down.

Into the dark.

You stand.

Tall.

Straight.

You feel the ground.

Solid.

Real.

You turn.

Walk back to the truck.

The door creaks.

You sit.

The wheel is cold.

You start the engine.

It coughs.

Sputters.

Then roars.

Life.

Raw.

Ugly.

Beautiful.

You drive.

North.

East.

Wherever.

The map is blank.

You do not need a map.

You have the compass in your chest.

It points true.

Always.

You drive.

The miles pass.

Time blurs.

You are not a man.

You are a force.

A current.

A stream.

You are the road.

You are the wind.

You are the silence.

You are the break.

The fracture.

The shatter.

The glass.

You are the shard.

Sharp.

Clean.

You cut through the air.

You cut through the lie.

You cut through the self.

You are free.

The cost is high.

The cost is total.

You paid it.

With your name.

With your home.

With your peace.

With your friend.

It was enough.

It is always enough.

You stop.

A town.

Small.

Gray.

Lights.

You park.

Walk in.

A diner.

Open.

Glass door.

Chime.

You sit.

Corner.

Dark.

A waitress.

Old.

Kind.

She brings coffee.

Hot.

Black.

You drink.

It burns.

Good.

You feel real.

You look around.

People.

Tired.

Sleepy.

Alive.

They do not know you.

You are no one.

You are free.

You finish the coffee.

Leave a coin.

Walk out.

The night is cool.

Stars.

Again.

You get in the truck.

You drive.

Away from the town.

Away from the life.

Away from the self.

You are going nowhere.

You are going everywhere.

You are the journey.

The road is long.

The night is deep.

You drive.

The engine hums.

A low.

Steady.

Note.

Like a heartbeat.

Your heartbeat.

Slowing.

Calm.

Peace.

You close your eyes.

For a second.

Just a second.

You see him.

Smiling.

Waving.

From the other side of the wind.

You smile back.

You open your eyes.

The road is clear.

The lights are bright.

You drive.

You are free.

The cost is paid.

The debt is cleared.

The glass is broken.

The shards are gone.

You are whole.

In the only way that matters.

Empty.

Open.

Free.

The truck moves.

Through the dark.

Through the night.

Through the silence.

You are alone.

You are not lonely.

You are with the wind.

You are with the road.

You are with the truth.

It is enough.

It is all.

You drive.

North.

Into the dawn.

The light comes.

Slow.

Soft.

Pink.

Gold.

The world wakes up.

Birds sing.

Wolves howl.

The earth turns.

You turn with it.

You are part of it.

Small.

Big.

Nothing.

Everything.

You drive.

The road goes on.

You go on.

The end is not a stop.

It is a start.

The start of nothing.

The start of all.

You drive.

Free.
