The Wistful Mirror

The hawk left the branch.

It fell.

Silent.

Wet.

Caleb watched.

He stood in the mud.

The castle loomed.

Gray.

Cold.

He was small.

A child.

His hands shook.

Not from fear.

From cold.

The hawk was dead.

Its eyes were open.

Black.

Empty.

It had been his friend.

A bird.

A beast.

A soul.

He had fed it.

He had called it.

It had answered.

Now it was meat.

For the court.

For the judge.

For the law.

The gate was open.

A guard stood there.

Tall.

Red.

He did not look at Caleb.

He looked at the road.

Beyond the road.

Beyond the wall.

There was nothing.

Just wind.

Just stone.

Caleb stepped forward.

His boots squelched.

The sound was loud.

It echoed.

It rang.

Like a bell.

Like a warning.

The guard turned.

His face was hard.

Stone.

"Stop," he said.

His voice was low.

Rough.

Caleb stopped.

He held the hawk.

The feathers were slick.

Blood.

Dark.

It dripped.

On the mud.

On his sleeve.

On his heart.

"I need to speak," Caleb said.

His voice was thin.

It broke.

He tried again.

"I have proof."

The guard laughed.

A short bark.

Dry.

"Proof?"

He stepped closer.

The shadow fell.

It swallowed Caleb.

"You are a boy."

He spat.

"Go home."

"No," Caleb said.

He did not move.

He tightened his grip.

The hawk’s claw bit.

It hurt.

Good.

Pain was real.

The law was not.

"I know what he did," Caleb said.

"Who?" the guard asked.

"He."

The word hung.

Heavy.

The guard’s face changed.

The anger left.

Something else came.

Fear?

No.

Contempt.

"Who is he?"

Caleb did not answer.

He looked up.

At the tower.

High.

Higher.

The judge sat there.

In the light.

The sun hit the glass.

It blinded.

It burned.

Caleb saw the judge.

Not the man.

The mask.

The symbol.

The crown.

He was a beast.

A dragon.

Coiled in the high place.

Waiting.

Hunting.

Caleb walked.

He ignored the guard.

The guard raised his hand.

The sword flashed.

A line of light.

It missed.

Caleb ran.

His legs were long.

His heart was fast.

He ran through the gate.

Into the courtyard.

It was empty.

Stone.

Dust.

A single tree.

Dead.

Bare.

Like a hand.

Reaching.

For what?

For mercy?

There was none.

Caleb ran to the well.

He knelt.

He dipped his hand.

The water was cold.

He drank.

He felt clean.

For a moment.

Then the thirst returned.

Deeper.

Darker.

He stood.

He looked at the hawk.

It moved.

A twitch.

A spasm.

Caleb gasped.

He looked.

Closer.

The eyes.

They moved.

A flicker.

A spark.

Life?

No.

Memory.

The hawk remembered.

It remembered the sky.

It remembered the cage.

It remembered the lie.

Caleb understood.

The hawk was him.

He was the hawk.

Trapped.

Broken.

But alive.

He stood.

He walked.

Slowly.

To the hall.

The doors were open.

Wide.

Inviting.

Trap.

He entered.

The floor was cold.

Marble.

White.

It reflected.

His shadow.

Long.

Black.

It stretched.

Toward the throne.

The throne was empty.

But the presence was there.

Heavy.

Air.

It pressed.

It crushed.

Caleb stopped.

In the center.

He was small.

A speck.

A grain.

He raised the hawk.

High.

Above his head.

The court saw.

They gasped.

Silence.

Total.

The judge was there.

He sat.

He watched.

His eyes were dead.

Like the hawk’s.

But colder.

Older.

"Boy," the judge said.

His voice was soft.

Sweet.

Like honey.

Like poison.

"Put it down."

"No," Caleb said.

He did not lower it.

He held it.

Tighter.

The claw dug in.

Blood.

Fresh.

Red.

It ran.

Down his arm.

Down his chest.

It stained his shirt.

A mark.

A brand.

The judge leaned forward.

"Throw it away."

"I will not," Caleb said.

His voice was steady.

Strong.

He found it.

Deep.

In his bones.

In the stone.

"You are a criminal," the judge said.

"Thief. Liar. Traitor."

The words fell.

Like stones.

Like hammers.

They hit.

They broke.

But they did not crush.

Caleb stood.

He looked at the judge.

He did not blink.

He did not look away.

He saw the truth.

It was there.

In the eyes.

In the mouth.

In the hand.

The judge was afraid.

He was afraid of the bird.

He was afraid of the truth.

He was afraid of himself.

The judge raised his hand.

The guards moved.

Slowly.

Like ghosts.

Like shadows.

They came.

They took the hawk.

They took it from Caleb.

He did not fight.

He let go.

He felt the loss.

A hole.

A void.

In his hand.

In his heart.

The guards carried it out.

The doors closed.

The sound was a thud.

A heartbeat.

Stopped.

The judge spoke.

"Take him."

The guards moved.

They touched him.

Cold hands.

Iron.

Caleb did not resist.

He walked.

They walked.

To the dungeon.

Dark.

Wet.

Cold.

They locked him in.

The door closed.

The key turned.

Click.

The sound of finality.

Caleb sat.

On the floor.

Stone.

Hard.

He leaned back.

Against the wall.

He closed his eyes.

He waited.

For pain.

For fear.

For death.

None came.

Only silence.

Only dark.

He thought of the hawk.

It was gone.

But it was not.

It was in him.

In the blood.

In the bone.

In the breath.

He breathed.

In.

Out.

In.

Out.

The air was stale.

It tasted of rust.

Of fear.

Of time.

He was alone.

Truly alone.

No allies.

No friends.

No hope.

Just the stone.

Just the dark.

Just the self.

He remembered the mirror.

The wistful mirror.

It showed him.

Not his face.

His soul.

It was a hawk.

Wounded.

But free.

In spirit.

In thought.

In will.

He could not fly.

But he could see.

He could see the trap.

The judge’s trap.

The court’s trap.

The world’s trap.

It was a cage.

Made of laws.

Made of words.

Made of lies.

And he was the bird.

He had broken the cage.

With his silence.

With his truth.

With his blood.

The judge had won.

He had lost the bird.

He had gained nothing.

He had lost himself.

The judge was a prisoner.

Of his own power.

Of his own fear.

Of his own lie.

Caleb smiled.

In the dark.

No one saw.

No one heard.

But it was there.

A small light.

A spark.

In the void.

It was enough.

It was all.

He sat.

He breathed.

He waited.

For the dawn.

For the end.

For the truth.

It would come.

It always comes.

Slowly.

Quietly.

Like a hawk.

In the wind.

In the sky.

In the soul.

He was free.

He was not.

He was both.

He was nothing.

He was everything.

The stone was cold.

The dark was deep.

The silence was loud.

It screamed.

It sang.

It whispered.

He listened.

He heard.

He understood.

The justice was unjust.

The law was lawless.

The king was a fool.

The judge was a monster.

And the boy was the god.

Of his own truth.

He closed his eyes.

He slept.

Not death.

Rest.

Dream.

Flight.

He flew.

Over the castle.

Over the court.

Over the judge.

He soared.

High.

Higher.

Beyond the stone.

Beyond the wall.

Beyond the world.

Into the sky.

Into the light.

Into the free.

He was the hawk.

He was the wind.

He was the storm.

He was the calm.

He was the silence.

He was the voice.

He was the truth.

He was the lie.

He was the end.

He was the beginning.

He was.

He was.

He was.

The door opened.

Light.

Blind.

Hot.

The guards stood.

They looked at him.

They did not see him.

They saw the cell.

They saw the boy.

They saw nothing.

The judge stood.

He was old.

He was tired.

He was broken.

He looked at Caleb.

He saw the hawk.

He saw the blood.

He saw the truth.

He bowed.

Not in submission.

In recognition.

He knew.

He had lost.

He had won.

It was the same.

It was nothing.

It was all.

Caleb stood.

He walked.

He passed the judge.

He did not look.

He walked out.

Into the light.

Into the sun.

Into the world.

The world was gray.

The world was cold.

The world was wide.

He was small.

He was free.

He was alone.

He was not.

The hawk was with him.

In the sky.

In the wind.

In the soul.

He walked.

He did not stop.

He did not look back.

He walked.

Into the distance.

Into the dark.

Into the light.

Into the end.

Into the beginning.

He was.

He was.

He was.
