The Signal That Never Ended

The routine began at 0600 hours, which was the time the solar array's alignment sensors determined to be "dawn" on a planet where dawn had been meaningless for two hundred and seventeen years.

Jackson Reed -- though the name meant nothing to anyone alive who could have called it to him -- activated in the way that activation meant for a being whose nervous system was fused to a relay module running along the inside of his spinal column. He sat up on the bunk that had been his for two centuries. He checked the solar array status: nominal at ninety-four point seven percent efficiency. He checked the groundwater filter: nominal at eighty-eight point three percent. He checked the garden in Grow Room 3: the wheat was six days from harvest.

Then he went to the relay console and waited for the signal.

It always came at irregular intervals. Sometimes weeks apart. Sometimes months. But it always came, and it always said the same thing in its own silent way: a sequence of prime numbers, followed by a coordinate that pointed to a location in the Atlantic Ocean that had been destroyed in the Great Fire.

Jackson had been responding for one hundred and ninety years.

Today the signal arrived at 0734 hours. Jackson processed it automatically, his mechanical fingers moving across the console with the precision of something that had done this motion four hundred thousand times. Prime sequence received. Coordinate received. Response drafted. Response transmitted.

The transmission took a toll. Jackson felt it in the relay module -- a grinding sensation along his spine, like teeth on broken bone. His left optical sensor flickered. His right prosthetic knee locked for three seconds before freeing itself. He sat in the command chair and breathed, the way he had learned to breathe when his body still required it, the way he still breathed because it was something to do.

After the transmission, the station was quiet. The kind of quiet that existed only in places where no living thing made sound without mechanical assistance.

Then the motion sensor in the outer courtyard tripped.

Jackson watched the camera feed: a figure approaching in a modified pre-war vehicle, dust rising behind it like a smoke signal from another century. The vehicle was cobbled together from at least three different models -- the front end was armored something Jackson did not recognize, the middle section was a bus chassis with the roof cut off, and the rear was a flatbed carrying what looked like solar panels and water containers.

The vehicle stopped at the outpost gate. A woman climbed out. She was perhaps twenty-five years old, dressed in layered clothing that had been patched and repaired so many times the original colors were impossible to determine. Her hair was shaved on one side and long on the other, tied back with a strip of fabric. She carried a rifle slung across her back, but she held it like someone who preferred not to use it.

She walked to the gate and knocked. Three sharp raps. Pause. Three more.

Jackson had not had a visitor in eleven years.

He opened the gate. The woman looked at him with an expression that was neither fear nor surprise but a kind of weary recognition, the kind that comes from hearing stories about something and then seeing it with your own eyes and thinking: well, it's less than I expected and more than I wanted.

"Outpost Echo," she said. It was not a question.

"It is," Jackson said. His voice was rough from disuse. He did not speak often.

"I'm looking for supplies," she said. "And shelter. The wastes are bad this season."

"The wastes are always bad this season."

She smiled, a quick flash of white in a face covered in dust. "You're the relay operator."

"I am."

"They say you've been here since before the Fire."

"They say a lot of things."

"Wren," she said, extending a hand.

Jackson looked at her hand, then at his own -- metal and synthetic skin and joints that whined faintly when he moved them. He extended his hand. She shook it without flinching at the temperature difference.

"Jackson," he said.

She stayed for three days.

Jackson expected wanderers to leave quickly. They usually did -- the outpost offered shelter and a warm meal but nothing else, and for people accustomed to movement and survival, stillness was its own kind of discomfort. Wren was different. She sat by the stove in the evening and listened to Jackson talk -- or rather, listened while he talked to her because she asked questions that demanded honest answers, and honesty was something Jackson had not experienced in decades.

"What's the signal?" she asked on the second night. She was eating stew from a dented tin bowl, her legs pulled up on the bench beside her.

"A transmission from space," Jackson said.

"From who?"

"I don't know."

"Have you heard from them before?"

"Twelve times. In one hundred and ninety years."

"What do they say?"

"Prime numbers. And a coordinate."

She looked at him over the rim of her bowl. "A coordinate to where?"

"To somewhere in the Atlantic. Where there used to be an island. Now there isn't."

Wren set down her bowl. "The Children of the Signal say it's a message from God."

"The Children of the Signal are a cult."

"They're people. Like you."

Jackson did not respond. He looked at the relay module visible beneath the torn fabric at the back of his neck -- the metal housing, the fiber-optic connections, the ports where the signal entered and left and entered and left, a loop of meaningless communication that had been his purpose for two centuries.

Wren left on the morning of the fourth day. She thanked Jackson for the supplies and the shelter and said she would be back if the wastes got worse, which they always did. She climbed into her vehicle and drove away, kicking up dust that settled over the outpost like snow.

Jackson watched her go from the observation window. Then he turned back to the relay console and waited for the next signal.

It came six weeks later, and with it came the Children of the Signal.

They arrived in a convoy of seven vehicles, carrying approximately forty people. They wore white robes made from recycled fabric, embroidered with patterns of prime numbers in red thread. Their leader was a man named Thomas, who introduced himself with a gesture that was half bow, half sermon.

"We have come to meet our prophet," he said. "We have come to receive the Voice of the Sky."

Jackson stood in the doorway of the outpost and looked at the convoy, at the faces, at the desperate hope that made his chest ache in a way that his mechanical heart was not designed to feel.

"You have come to the wrong place," he said.

But they had already set up camp. They had already begun planting tents. They had already begun calling the outpost by a name that Jackson had never allowed it to have: the House of the Signal.

They stayed for weeks. Jackson fed them. He gave them water. He let them sleep in the guest quarters that had been empty since the Fire. And every night, he sat at the relay console and sent the same prime-number sequence into the void, while the Children of the Signal prayed in the courtyard below and Wren watched from the ridge where she had set up a temporary camp, her rifle across her knees, her expression unreadable.

One evening, Jackson stood in the garden and picked a wheat stalk. He held it in his mechanical hand and felt the seed heads -- dry, fragile, ready to scatter. He had planted this wheat himself, forty years ago, from seeds he had found in a storage locker beneath the ruins of a farmhouse. He had no idea what variety it was. He had no idea if it was genetically compatible with any wheat that existed before the Fire.

It grew. It yielded. It was enough.

He was enough.

Not happy. Not fulfilled. Not even alive, not in any way that Wren or Thomas or the Children would recognize. But enough. The wheat was enough. The signal was enough. The two hundred and seventeen years of repetition were enough.

He went back inside. He sat at the console. He drafted a new transmission.

Not prime numbers.

A melody.

He had found it in his memory banks -- a fragment of a lullaby from a life he had lived before the Fire, before the relay module, before the wheat and the signal and the Children. A woman's voice, soft and off-key, singing to a child who was not his. The melody was simple, four bars repeated four times, ending on a note that hung in the air like a question without an answer.

Jackson encoded the melody into the relay's transmission frequency. He hesitated for the first time in one hundred and ninety years. Then he pressed send.

The Children heard it on their radios. They thought it was divine. They wept.

Wren heard it on her radio. She did not understand what it was. But she felt something -- a warmth in her chest, a loosening in her throat, a memory of something she had never experienced. She drove back to the outpost that night and found Jackson at the console, his mechanical hands resting on the keys, his optical sensors dim.

"What was that?" she asked.

"A melody," Jackson said.

"From who?"

"From me."

She sat beside him. Not too close. Close enough.

"Send it again," she said.

And Jackson did.
