The Distant Machine

March 14th.

The cufflink is blue.

Sapphire.

It catches the light.

A cold, hard eye.

I wear it every day.

Left wrist.

It is the only thing I own that is not mine.

Or perhaps it is the only thing that owns me.

The glass is thick.

The city below is gray.

Rain.

Always rain.

I look at my hands.

They are steady.

They must be steady.

If I shake, they will know.

They are already watching.

The door opens.

He enters.

Silent.

Like smoke.

"Good morning, Mr. Whitmore."

His voice is silk.

It wraps around my throat.

"Good morning, Sir."

I do not look up.

I look at the cufflink.

The blue deepens.

"You seem distracted."

"I am focused."

"Focus is good."

He sits.

The leather creaks.

A small sound.

A warning.

"The committee meets at noon."

"Yes."

"Are you ready?"

"Always."

He smiles.

It does not reach his eyes.

His eyes are dead.

Like the stone on my wrist.

"You know what they say about you."

"I do not follow the whispers."

"Everyone does."

He leans forward.

The scent of tobacco.

Old money.

Decay.

"They say you are a thief."

The air stops.

My breath stops.

I keep my gaze on the cufflink.

"Is that true?"

The question hangs.

A blade.

Dangling by a thread.

I feel the weight of it.

The sapphire burns.

"Not a thief," I say.

My voice is flat.

"A curator."

He laughs.

A dry, brittle sound.

"Curator."

He repeats the word.

Tasting it.

Spitting it out.

"Of what?"

"Of myself."

The silence stretches.

Tight.

Like a wire.

He stands.

He walks to the window.

The rain blurs the view.

"You are a dangerous man, Whitmore."

"I am a useful man."

"Useful."

He turns.

His face is a mask.

"Useful things break."

He leaves.

The door closes.

The silence rushes in.

I touch the cufflink.

Cold.

Hard.

Real.

I am not a thief.

I am a prisoner.

But I chose the cage.

Didn’t I?

March 15th.

The office is empty.

The phones are silent.

I sit in the dark.

The sapphire glows.

A faint, internal light.

I take it off.

The metal is cool.

It fits the groove of my wrist.

A scar.

A mark.

I remember the night I took it.

The gala.

The champagne.

The laughter.

I saw it on the table.

A gift.

A trap.

I put it in my pocket.

No one saw.

No one knows.

But I know.

The knowledge is a stone in my belly.

It pulls me down.

I put it back on.

The click is sharp.

A promise.

I am bound.

I am free.

The paradox is my life.

The door opens.

Not him.

Her.

Clara.

She stands in the frame.

Her coat is wet.

Her hair is dark.

She looks tired.

She looks like me.

"May I come in?"

Her voice is soft.

A question.

A plea.

"The door was open," I say.

She steps in.

She closes the door.

The world outside is gone.

We are alone.

The sapphire catches her eye.

She does not look away.

"You wear it often," she says.

"Every day."

"It is heavy."

"It is light."

She shakes her head.

"You lie."

I look at her.

Her eyes are sharp.

She sees me.

She sees the lie.

"I am not lying."

"You are performing."

"I am existing."

"Is there a difference?"

I do not answer.

I cannot.

She walks to the desk.

She places a cup of tea.

Hot.

Steam rises.

A ghost.

I wrap my hands around it.

The warmth is a shock.

"You are in trouble," she says.

It is not a question.

"Perhaps."

"Who is it?"

"Everyone."

"It is him."

I do not deny it.

The silence confirms it.

She sits.

She picks up a pen.

She plays with it.

A nervous habit.

"You could tell them."

"Tell them what?"

"The truth."

"The truth is ugly."

"Lies are uglier."

"Lies are comfortable."

"Comfort is a cage."

I look at her.

I see my mirror.

She is the key.

She is the lock.

"Clara."

"Yes."

"I am tired."

"I know."

"I want to be free."

"Then be free."

"Freedom is expensive."

"Pay the price."

I smile.

It is a sad smile.

"I have already paid."

She stops writing.

She looks at me.

Her face is full of sorrow.

"Pay it again."

The door opens.

He is back.

He is angry.

His face is red.

He does not see Clara.

He sees the cufflink.

His eyes narrow.

"Whitmore."

"Sir."

"Step into my office."

Now.

The command is absolute.

I stand.

I leave the cufflink on.

I follow him.

Clara remains.

She watches me go.

Her eyes are wet.

I do not turn back.

I cannot.

The hallway is long.

The carpet is red.

I walk fast.

My heart beats.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

The sapphire pulses.

I am a thief.

I am a saint.

I am nothing.

The office door is open.

He stands by the window.

His back is to me.

"Take it off," he says.

My voice is steady.

"No."

He turns.

His eyes are cold.

"Why?"

"Because it is mine."

The word hangs.

Mine.

It is a bomb.

He steps forward.

He reaches for my wrist.

I pull back.

A small movement.

A huge mistake.

He stops.

He looks at me.

Really looks.

He sees the fear.

He sees the defiance.

He sees the truth.

"You think you are free," he says.

"I think I am honest."

"Honesty is a luxury."

"I can afford it."

He laughs.

It is a cruel sound.

"You are a fool."

"I am a man."

"You are a prisoner."

"I am the warden."

He steps closer.

His face is inches from mine.

I can smell his breath.

Sour.

Stale.

"Prove it."

"Prove what?"

"Prove you are the warden."

I do not move.

I do not speak.

I look at him.

I see the fear in his eyes.

He is afraid of me.

He is afraid of the cufflink.

He is afraid of the truth.

I reach into my pocket.

I pull out the envelope.

It is thin.

It is white.

I hold it out.

He takes it.

His hands shake.

He opens it.

He reads.

His face changes.

The anger fades.

The fear grows.

He looks at me.

His eyes are wide.

"What is this?"

"I don't know."

He reads again.

He drops the paper.

It flutters to the floor.

He is pale.

He backs away.

He touches the wall.

"Who gave you this?"

"Clara."

"Clara."

He whispers the name.

Like a curse.

"Did she know?"

"She knew everything."

He looks at the floor.

He picks up the paper.

He holds it to his chest.

He is shaking.

He is defeated.

I am free.

The cufflink is still on my wrist.

It is heavy.

It is cold.

It is mine.

I turn.

I walk out.

I do not look back.

The hallway is long.

The carpet is red.

I walk fast.

My heart beats.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

I reach my office.

Clara is gone.

The tea is cold.

The cup is empty.

The chair is empty.

The sapphire glows.

I sit down.

I look at the cufflink.

I take it off.

The metal is cool.

The groove is dark.

I put it on the desk.

It rolls.

It stops.

It is still.

I am still.

I am free.

I am alone.

The door opens.

It is empty.

The wind blows.

The rain falls.

The city is gray.

I am here.

I am nothing.

I am everything.

The cufflink is on the desk.

I do not touch it.

I do not need it.

I am free.

The price is paid.

The price is me.

March 16th.

The office is empty.

The phones are silent.

I sit in the dark.

The sapphire is on the desk.

I do not look at it.

I look at my wrist.

The groove is empty.

The skin is pale.

I am lighter.

I am heavier.

I open my desk.

I take out a pen.

I write.

My hand is steady.

The ink is black.

The paper is white.

I write my name.

James Whitmore.

I cross it out.

I write again.

James.

I stop.

I look at the cufflink.

It is gone.

I do not know where it went.

I do not care.

I am free.

The door opens.

Clara enters.

She is wet.

She is tired.

She is alive.

She looks at me.

She looks at the empty desk.

She smiles.

It is a small smile.

A sad smile.

A true smile.

"Did you do it?" she asks.

"Yes."

"Are you happy?"

"I am free."

"Is that the same?"

"Yes."

She sits.

She puts her hand on mine.

Her hand is cold.

My hand is warm.

We sit in the dark.

The rain falls.

The city sleeps.

I am awake.

I am here.

I am free.

The cost is high.

The price is paid.

I am the warden.

I am the prisoner.

I am the key.

I am the lock.

I am the door.

I am the room.

I am the light.

I am the dark.

I am the cufflink.

I am the groove.

I am the stone.

I am the skin.

I am the blood.

I am the bone.

I am the breath.

I am the heart.

I am the soul.

I am the name.

I am the lie.

I am the truth.

I am James Whitmore.

I am no one.

I am everyone.

I am free.

The story ends.

The light goes out.

The rain stops.

The silence begins.
