The Wistful Campus
I woke in the cold.
The air bit my face. It tasted of iron and old blood. I opened my eyes.
Darkness.
Absolute.
I sat up.
My head throbbed.
A dull, rhythmic pain.
Behind my left eye.
I touched it.
My fingers found a gash.
Crusted.
Dark.
I looked down.
My tunic.
It was torn.
Ragged.
The fabric was gray.
Once white.
Now stained with mud and something darker.
I stood.
My legs shook.
They felt weak.
Hollow.
I walked.
I did not know where.
The ground was uneven.
Stones bit through my boots.
I heard a sound.
A whisper.
In the wind.
Or in my head.
*You failed.*
The voice was clear.
Cold.
It sounded like my captain.
I kept walking.
The mist thickened.
It swallowed the world.
I could not see my hand.
Not even an inch away.
I felt a pull.
On my sleeve.
I yanked my arm back.
Nothing.
Just the fog.
I reached for my sword.
It was gone.
I searched the ground.
My hands groped the dirt.
I found nothing.
Just a button.
A small, brass circle.
It was warm.
I picked it up.
It was from my old uniform.
The one I wore before the war.
Before the change.
I held it tight.
The metal bit into my palm.
It hurt.
Good.
Pain was real.
Pain was mine.
I heard footsteps.
Crunching on gravel.
Close.
I spun around.
No one.
Just the gray nothing.
But the smell remained.
Sweat.
Fear.
And old wool.
I knew that smell.
It was Thomas.
My brother.
My friend.
My mirror.
He was dead.
I had seen him fall.
I had held him.
His eyes were open.
Looking at the sky.
Not at me.
Why did I smell him?
Why did I feel his presence?
I was alone.
Always alone.
The fog parted.
Just for a second.
I saw a gate.
Iron.
Black.
It stood in the middle of the field.
There was no path.
Only weeds.
Tall.
Thick.
I walked toward it.
My heart hammered.
A loud, steady drum.
*Thump. Thump. Thump.*
I reached the gate.
It was locked.
I shook the bars.
They did not move.
They were heavy.
Cold.
I looked through the gap.
Inside.
A courtyard.
Cobblestones.
Wet.
Reflecting the pale light.
And a figure.
Standing still.
Back to me.
Wearing a red coat.
Bright.
Vibrant.
Against the gray.
I recognized the coat.
It was mine.
My command coat.
The one the court had stripped from me.
The one they said was stained by treason.
I pushed harder.
The gate groaned.
Metal on metal.
A sharp screech.
It did not open.
I kicked it.
Once.
Twice.
My foot ached.
I stopped.
I breathed.
In.
Out.
The figure inside turned.
Slowly.
It was me.
My face.
My eyes.
But different.
Clear.
Calm.
Not broken.
Not haunted.
He looked at me.
He smiled.
It was a sad smile.
Full of pity.
He raised a hand.
He held something.
A badge.
Silver.
Round.
My badge.
The one they took from my chest.
The one that marked me as a traitor.
He held it up.
He did not throw it.
He just held it.
A question.
An offer.
A choice.
I looked at my hands.
They were dirty.
Bloodied.
Clawed.
I looked at his hand.
Clean.
Whole.
Strong.
I wanted it.
I wanted to be him.
I wanted to put the coat back on.
I wanted the world to make sense.
I wanted to be the soldier they said I was.
Not the monster.
Not the traitor.
The monster was in my head.
The monster was the truth.
I had seen the orders.
I had seen the bodies.
I had done what was required.
And I was hated for it.
Misunderstood.
Ignored.
The system did not care about the truth.
It cared about the image.
I was the image they needed to break.
So they broke me.
I reached for the badge.
My fingers brushed the iron bars.
Cold.
Bit into my skin.
I pulled back.
I did not want it.
Not like this.
Not bought with my blood.
Not earned by their forgiveness.
I turned away.
I walked back into the fog.
The figure watched me.
He did not move.
He did not call out.
He just watched.
A witness.
A ghost.
I walked.
The pain in my head grew.
It became a roar.
A white noise.
I fell.
I hit the ground hard.
Dirt in my mouth.
I tasted earth.
I lay there.
Looking up.
The fog was gone.
The sky was open.
Blue.
Deep.
Endless.
Stars.
Faint.
Distant.
But there.
I looked at my hands again.
They were still dirty.
Still bloodied.
I did not wash them.
I did not try to clean them.
I let them be.
They were part of me.
The stain was part of me.
I could not remove it.
I could not pretend it was not there.
But I did not have to be it.
I could be more than the stain.
I could be the man who carried it.
Not the man who was destroyed by it.
I stood up.
Slowly.
My legs held.
They did not shake.
I felt a weight.
In my chest.
Heavy.
Solid.
It was not guilt.
It was not shame.
It was something else.
Resolve.
Quiet.
Steady.
I looked back at the gate.
The figure was gone.
The gate was gone.
Only the weeds.
And the fog.
I took a step.
Then another.
I did not look back.
I walked into the light.
The air was cold.
But clean.
It filled my lungs.
I breathed it in.
Deep.
Full.
I was alone.
But I was not empty.
I was full.
Full of the choice I had made.
To be myself.
Not the image they wanted.
Not the monster they feared.
Just me.
Broken.
Mended.
Whole.
I walked on.
The path was clear.
The steps were sure.
I did not run.
I did not hide.
I walked.
And I lived.
The end was not death.
The end was freedom.
I had chosen it.
With my hands.
With my blood.
With my soul.
I was free.
