The heat in Jackson, Mississippi, did not simply sit on you. It pressed down, heavy and wet, the way a hand presses down on your chest when you are lying in bed and cannot breathe. Elias Thorne knew this heat the way a man knows his own name—through forty-five years of carrying it.

He was forty-five, a cab driver in a town that had more history than money and more money than sense. He lived alone in a house his grandfather had built before the war, a two-story wooden structure on a street that the city had forgotten about, where the paint peeled like sunburned skin and the porch sagged like a tired man sinking into a chair. The townspeople thought he was mad. Elias did not correct them. Madness, he had learned, was just another word for seeing clearly in a town that preferred its blindness.

On a July afternoon in 1954, a young woman got into his cab.

She was nineteen, maybe twenty. Clara Beaumont—though Elias did not know her name then. He knew only what he could see through the rearview mirror: a silk dress the color of cream, now stained with mud at the hem; a face pale beneath a layer of powder that had begun to run with sweat; eyes that darted from side to side like a bird trapped in a room. Clara exhaled, a sound that was almost a sob but not quite. Elias knew the name. Everyone in Jackson knew the name. Judge Beaumont was a man who owned land and cotton and the loyalty of half the men in the county. He was also a man who had never once looked at Elias Thorne as if he were a human being.

Now his daughter was sitting in his cab, running from him, with mud on her dress and terror in her eyes.

Oak Junction was a crossroads—two roads intersecting, a gas station on one corner, a church on another, and beyond that, nothing but fields and trees and the long, slow Mississippi afternoon stretching out toward evening. Clara got out of the cab at the junction, threw a silver dollar into Elias's lap, and said, "Don't ask. Don't tell anyone. Just don't."

Then she walked into the trees.

Elias watched her go. He saw her disappear into the green darkness, the silk dress flashing briefly like a ghost, and then she was gone. That evening, he went to see Walter Price.

Walter ran the gas station at Oak Junction—a small wooden building with a pump out front and a single chair in the office where Walter sat and read newspapers and drank coffee from a chipped enamel mug. He and Elias had known each other since they were boys, back when they used to swim in the creek behind Elias's house and steal peaches from the Beaumont orchard and swear they would never become men like the ones in Jackson.

Elias found him in the chair, reading the Times-Picayune. He set the silver dollar on Walter's desk.

"Walter," he said. "I need to ask you something."

Walter looked up. He looked at the silver dollar. He looked back at Elias. His eyes were dark and quiet, the way they always were, but Elias saw something move behind them—a flicker of recognition, of understanding, of something that had been waiting to surface.

Elias stood up. He walked to the door. He paused with his hand on the frame. "Walter," he said. "If someone needed help—if someone was in trouble—what would you do?"

Walter looked at him. His face was a mask of calm, but Elias saw the tension in his jaw, the slight tremor in his hands. "I would do what I had to do," he said. "And then I would live with it."

Elias left. He drove home. He drank a bottle of beer. He went to bed and dreamed of a girl in a silk dress falling from a roof, over and over, never hitting the ground.

Two weeks later, two men got into his cab.

They were strangers—neither from Jackson, neither from anywhere Elias knew. One was tall and thin, with sharp features and cold eyes. The other was shorter and broader, with a face like a bulldog and a scar running from his ear to his jaw. They wore suits that cost more than Elias's cab, but they moved like men who were used to solving problems with violence.

"We're looking for something," the tall one said, sitting in the front seat. "Your girl hid it. We know you know where it is."

Elias felt the blood leave his face. "I don't know—"

The short one leaned forward from the back seat. He held a revolver, pointed at Elias's spine. "Drive," he said. "To the old Beaumont gas station. On Route 7."

Elias drove.

The road to Route 7 was a nightmare of mud and potholes. Rain had fallen the night before, turning the dirt road into a river of brown sludge. Elias's cab bounced and swerved, the suspension groaning under the strain. The men sat rigid, the revolver never leaving Elias's back.

Halfway to the gas station, the cab hit a hidden hole—a puddle deeper than it looked, filled with mud and water. The front wheel sank. The cab lurched, tilted, and came to a stop, half-submerged in the muck.

"Damn it," the tall one said. "What happened?"

"The road's bad," Elias said. "The rain—"

"Fix it."

Elias opened the door and stepped out. The mud sucked at his shoes. He looked at the front wheel, buried to the hub in brown sludge. He looked at the gas station ahead—a small wooden building, lit from within, with a single figure visible through the window. Walter.

"I need to go to the station," Elias said. "Borrow a light. My cigarette's out."

The short one sneered. "You think we're stupid? You run, we shoot you."

"I'm not running. I'm going to borrow a light. That all."

The tall one considered this. Then he nodded. "Hurry up. And don't try anything."

Elias walked toward the gas station. His heart was hammering. His hands were shaking. But he kept walking.

He reached the door and pushed it open. Walter was inside, standing by the counter, a phone receiver in his hand. He looked at Elias. Elias looked at him.

No words were spoken. None were needed.

Walter set down the receiver. He picked up a box of matches from the counter, struck one, and held it to his cigarette. Then he looked at Elias and nodded—once, sharp, decisive.

Elias went back to the cab. He got in. He pulled a cigarette from his pocket and put it in his mouth. He took out his matches. He struck one. It went out in the wind. He struck another. It went out. He struck a third. It caught.

The men watched him through the window, smiling.

Elias leaned back in his seat and lit his cigarette. He took a long drag. He looked at the road ahead. He looked at the gas station. He saw Walter step out of the door, walk to the phone booth at the corner of the building, and pick up the receiver.

Elias closed his eyes. He exhaled smoke. He waited.

Ten minutes passed. Then twenty. Then the sound of engines—many engines, approaching fast, kicking up dust and mud and noise. The men in the cab stood up, startled.

"What is that?" the tall one said.

Elias looked through the window. State police cars—three of them, red and white, lights flashing, sirens wailing. They came from both directions, blocking the road at both ends, men with guns leaping out and taking position behind the doors.

The tall man raised his hands. The short one tried to run. A bullet caught him in the leg, and he went down with a cry.

Elias sat in his cab, watching it all unfold, feeling the mud on his shoes and the smoke in his lungs and the silver dollar in his pocket. He felt nothing. Or everything. It was hard to tell the difference in Jackson, Mississippi, on a rainy night in 1954.

The truth came out in the weeks that followed. Judge Beaumont had been running a protection racket—extorting money from farmers, bribing officials, laundering cash through the Beaumont cotton business. Clara had discovered the ledgers, the proof, and she had tried to take them to the sheriff. But the sheriff was on the Judge's payroll. So Clara had gone to Elias, the only person in town she trusted, and asked him to drive her to Oak Junction, where her mother's family lived—a family that had disowned the Beaumonts years ago for their cruelty and greed.

But the Judge's men had followed her. They had caught her at the junction. They had taken the ledgers. And then, because Clara knew too much, they had taken her life.

Elias was hailed as a hero by some, a fool by others. He refused the sheriff's offer of a reward. He refused the newspaper's offer of an interview. He went home, sat in his parlor, and looked at the silver dollar on his table.

Sometimes, he would pick it up and turn it over in his fingers, thinking of Clara, thinking of Walter, thinking of the mud on Route 7 and the phone booth at the corner of the gas station and the sound of police engines approaching in the rain.

"Sometimes," he would say to the empty room, "it's better not to know."

But he knew. And knowing was the heaviest thing of all.
