The Tower Fire
The tower was not on any family map. Silas Winslow discovered this on his third day back in Mississippi, standing in the easternmost field of the plantation with a property survey from 1932 spread across the hood of his rental car, watching the tower rise from the hill like a bone picked clean.
It was fifty feet tall, square in cross-section, built of brick and iron with a spiral staircase inside and a small room at the top. The brick was stained dark in places—not from weather, but from soot. Decades of smoke had baked itself into the masonry, leaving the tower the colour of strong coffee.
The house behind him was a different story: white columns sagging like tired legs, a wraparound porch with railings that had been repaired so many times they were now a patchwork of different wood, magnolia trees in the front yard growing wild and untended. The Winslow plantation had been forty thousand acres in 1850. Now it was four hundred, and the rest had been sold off in parcels to pay taxes that kept growing while the cotton prices kept shrinking.
Mary Ann met him at the house door. She was seventy-two, small and straight as a rod, her hair pulled back in a bun so tight it pulled the corners of her eyes into a permanent expression of assessment. She had served the Winslow family for fifty years—first her mother, then her, now Silas, whether he wanted the service or not.
"Mr. Silas," she said. Not "welcome home." Not "it's good to see you." Just his name, delivered with the weight of seventy-two years of watching Winslow men come and go.
"Mary Ann. Thank you for keeping things ready."
"Things ain't ready. Things are surviving. There's a difference." She stepped aside to let him enter, then paused. "You seen the tower yet?"
"Yes. It's—"
"Built 1863. Grandfather Nathan's grandfather put it up. Not on any blueprint. Not in any record. Just built, because it needed to be built."
"For what?"
Mary Ann's expression did not change. "You'll find out. Or you won't. Winslows always figure it out eventually, or they don't, and then someone else comes along and figures it out later. It's the way of things."
She went to the kitchen. Silas stood in the parlor, looking at the tower through the east window, and felt the way the house looked at him: not unwelcoming, exactly, but evaluating. The house had seen seven Winslow heirs in his lifetime. He was the eighth. Whether he would survive the evaluation remained to be seen.
The instruction manual appeared a week later.
Silas was clearing out his grandfather Nathan's study—a room that had been sealed since Nathan's death in 1948, dust sheets over the furniture, newspapers from the fifties stacked on the desk—when he found a locked cabinet behind a false panel in the bookshelf. The lock was old but not difficult. Inside: a leather-bound folder containing a manual for operating the tower fire.
The manual was dated 1863 and had been updated periodically. The latest update was 1947, six months before Nathan died. The instructions were precise:
1. Each evening at dusk, prepare the fuel mixture
2. Climb to the tower top
3. Ignite the fuel bundle using the flint and steel provided
4. Adjust the burning angle according to the daily order (kept in the brass box beneath the tower room)
5. Monitor the flame for one hour
6. Descend and secure the tower door
The fuel mixture was described in vague terms: "vegetable oil and resin, or the Blue Compound after 1920." The manual contained no explanation of what the Blue Compound was, only a recipe: "Obtain from E. Strauss, chemist. Use sparingly. The flame it produces is... distinctive."
Silas sat on Nathan's dusty desk and read the manual three times. Then he climbed to the tower for the first time.
The interior staircase was iron, each step stamped with the name of a Winslow who had climbed it before him. Silas counted thirteen names, spanning 1863 to 1947. Some names appeared multiple times—generations of men with the same name, each one climbing these steps to light the fire.
The tower room at the top was small: six feet by six feet, with a brick firebox in the centre, a brass box on the wall containing the daily order slips, a flint and steel on a hook, and a shelf stacked with bundles of resin-soaked rags. The air smelled of old smoke and something else—something chemical, faint but persistent, like the memory of a smell rather than the smell itself.
Silas climbed down and went to the brass box. It was full of order slips, each one dated and coded:
E-SE (East-Southeast)
S (South)
W-N (West-North)
SE-Four (Southeast, angle four)
He carried the slips to the study and spread them across Nathan's desk. There were thousands of them. Five thousand, maybe ten thousand. One for every day from 1863 to 1947. Every single day, a Winslow had climbed the tower and lit a fire and pointed it in a direction specified by a code he had received from somewhere.
From whom?
The answer was in the family archives, which Silas had partially studied during his brief academic career before the scandal. He had been a professor of Southern history at Duke—promising tenure, publishing a well-received book on Reconstruction-era economic transformation—until he published a follow-up that revealed something the local historical society preferred forgotten. The book was pulled from shelves. His tenure was withdrawn. He left academia and drove south because south was where his family was, and family was the only thing he had left.
The archives were in the house basement, a damp room with shelves of ledgers and boxes of correspondence. Silas spent three nights down there, reading, cross-referencing, building a picture that was less a history and more a conspiracy.
The tower fire was not a navigational aid. It was a signal—and for most of its existence, it was a signal used for profit.
During the Civil War, the Winslow ancestor—Elias Winslow—used the tower to signal both Union and Confederate vessels passing through the river channel. The signals told ships which side to join, or which route to take, or which coves to anchor in. Sometimes the signals were genuine: "Union ships approaching, seek shelter in the cove." Sometimes they were mercenary: "Federal vessel loaded with supplies, approach from the south reef for 'salvage opportunities.'"
Elias sold signals to both sides. The Union paid in gold. The Confederacy paid in cotton. When the war ended, he had enough of both to rebuild the plantation twice over.
The tower fire continued through Reconstruction and Jim Crow, but its purpose evolved. In the late 1800s, it signaled riverboats carrying illegal whiskey during Prohibition's precursors. In the 1920s and 30s, it guided rum-runners along the coast. In each era, the Winslow who operated the tower found new customers and new codes and new directions.
Then came 1924, and Emil Strauss.
Strauss was a German chemist who arrived in Mississippi with no known background, no references, and a suitcase full of laboratory equipment. He rented a room in the plantation house and offered his services to Nathan Winslow—Silas's grandfather—who was looking to modernize the fuel mixture.
The old fuel (vegetable oil and resin) produced an orange flame visible from about five miles. Strauss's compound produced a blue flame visible from fifteen. The blue flame was more efficient, more distinctive, and according to Strauss, "less likely to attract unwanted attention during daylight hours."
Silas found Strauss's name in one ledger: a payment of $500 in December 1924, described as "Chemical consultation and supply delivery." There were no further records of Strauss after 1927. He did not die—he simply stopped appearing in the records. Vanished, like Old Thomas in the lighthouse story his nephew had once read to him. Vanished into the humid Mississippi air, leaving behind only a blue flame and a question that no one in the family seemed willing to ask.
Silas was on the tower again on the ninth night.
He had prepared the fuel—resin and rag, the old mixture, because he was not ready to use whatever chemical Nathan had been using in 1947. He climbed the spiral staircase, his footsteps echoing on the iron steps, and emerged into the tower room.
He lit the bundle.
The flame caught with a crackle and rose to full height in three seconds. It was orange and yellow and familiar—the colour of campfires and candlelight and any fire that burned wood and resin.
Silas stood in the tower room and watched the flame, feeling the warmth on his face, listening to the crackle, and thought: this is what it must have been like for five thousand days. This warm, simple act. Light the fire. Point it somewhere. Wait an hour. Come down. Repeat.
Then he looked out the tower window, and the wind shifted, and the flame changed.
It did not change from orange to blue—that would have been explainable, a chemical reaction, a different fuel. It changed from orange to something that was not a colour he had a name for. It was like looking at a frequency just beyond visible light, a hue that existed in the gap between colours, a visual static that made his eyes water and his stomach turn.
And below him, on the Mississippi River, he saw something moving.
Not a boat. Something else. A dark shape, massive and slow, gliding through the river current with a grace that was inhuman. It was perhaps twice the length of a riverboat, and it moved without creating waves, as if the water parted for it rather than being displaced by it.
Silas gripped the tower wall and leaned out, his heart hammering, telling himself it was a log, a sandbar, a trick of the flame-light and the river mist.
The shape pulsed. Once. Twice. Then it slipped beneath the surface and was gone.
Silas descended the stairs in a hurry, his hands shaking on the iron railing. He locked the tower door, put the key in his pocket, and walked back to the house without looking at the tower again.
The next morning, Sheriff J.D. Huckins arrived.
He was fifty-five, broad-shouldered, with a face that had been shaped by decades of squinting into sunlight and suspicious people. He parked his patrol car on the lawn—technically illegal trespassing, but the sheriff could trespass on his own county and Silas was not the type to complain.
"Mr. Winslow," the sheriff said, removing his hat and examining the house columns as if reading an inscription. "I understand you've been using the tower."
"Yes."
"Blue flame?"
Silas felt his throat tighten. "What blue flame?"
Huckins turned to face him. His eyes were the colour of river water—brown, opaque, impossible to see through. "My father was a deputy in 1947. His father was sheriff before him. The Huckins family has watched that tower for four generations, Mr. Winslow. We know when it's lit. We know what colour the flame is."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
Huckins nodded slowly. "Your uncle Caleb—Nathan's youngest son—he was the last one to use the Strauss compound. 1946 and 47. He lit the blue flame every night for eleven months. Then one night in October 1947, he climbed the tower, lit the fire, and jumped."
"Jumped?"
"From the top. Straight down. Seventeen feet to brick ground. Broken his neck before he hit the bottom." Huckins paused. "The coroner's report said accidental. He was drunk, they said. Climbed the tower in a stupor, leaned too far over the firebox, fell. But I was a boy then, and I visited my father on duty nights, and I saw the tower room after Caleb jumped. The fire was still burning. The body was below. And the flame—"
Huckins stopped. He looked at Silas with an expression that was almost pity.
"The flame was blue, Mr. Winslow. And it was looking at him."
Silas sat down on the porch step. The wood was warm from the morning sun. He could feel its heat through his trousers.
"Why are you telling me this?"
"Because the tower is lit tonight. I can see the smoke from my car. And I need to know if you're using the old fuel or the new."
"I don't know what new fuel."
Huckins sighed. It was a long, tired sigh, the sigh of a man who had delivered this conversation before and knew it would end the same way. "Then you'll find out. It always works that way. The tower decides when you're ready, and when you are, you see it, and then you have a choice."
"What choice?"
"Whether to keep lighting it or to jump."
The sheriff put his hat back on and walked to his car. He drove away slowly, kicking up dust on the driveway, and Silas sat on the porch until sunset, thinking about five thousand days of fire and a man named Caleb who had jumped from the tower in 1947 and a chemical named Strauss who had vanished into Mississippi humidity and a shape in the river that was not a log and not a sandbar.
That night, at dusk, Silas climbed the tower.
He did not want to. Every instinct told him to turn back, to drive to the nearest motel, to drive further south if necessary, to put as many miles between himself and this house and this tower as his bank account could sustain.
But he climbed anyway.
He prepared the old fuel—resin and rag. He lit it. The flame rose orange and yellow and normal. He stood in the tower room and waited the prescribed hour, watching the river, watching the sky, watching the flame.
At the hour's end, he did the one thing the manual did not instruct him to do. He opened the brass box and took out the most recent order slip he had not yet read. It was dated October 31, 1947—the week Caleb jumped.
The code was simple: C (Centre). Point the fire straight ahead, toward the river, toward whatever was in the river.
Silas adjusted the flame bracket. He pointed the fire at the river.
The wind shifted. The flame flickered. And for three seconds, it turned blue.
In the blue light, Silas saw the river surface bulge—not a boat, not a log, but something vast and slow and patient, rising from the depths with the deliberate grace of something that had been waiting a very long time to be seen.
The flame returned to orange. The river was calm. The tower room was warm.
Silas descended the stairs. He went to the study. He took out a fresh notebook—plain, black, unmarked—and wrote on the first page:
Silas Winslow. April 15th, 2055. The tower is lit. The flame is amber. The river moves. I am the keeper now.
He understood. He would never leave this house. He would climb these stairs every evening, light the fire, point it at the river, and wait for the blue flame and the shape beneath the water. He was not a jailer. He was not a guardian. He was a prisoner, and the tower was his cell, and the fire was his sentence, and he would serve it every night until he jumped or the fire stopped or the river ran dry.
All of which, he suspected with a calm that was almost peace, would be a very long time.
Silas Winslow closed the notebook, blew out the desk lamp, and waited for dusk.
