The Golden Compass

I dreamed of the rope.

It hung from the rafters. It was thick. It was old. The fibers were matted. They looked like hair. They looked like skin. I touched it in the dream. It burned. It bit. I woke with the taste of iron in my mouth. The cellar smelled of damp stone. It smelled of rot. I am Thomas Bradshaw. I am the King’s Hound. I hunt lies. I hunt treason. I do not hunt ghosts. Or so I thought.

My brother is here.

His name is Elias. He is small. He is quiet. He has hands that tremble. They are the hands of a scribe. They are the hands of a man who breaks easily. He sits by the fire. The fire is low. It sputters. It gives little light. It gives much smoke. Elias coughs. He wipes his mouth. A streak of blood. He does not look at me. He looks at the floor. He looks at the dirt.

Why are you here, brother?

I am tired, Thomas.

Tired of what?

Of the ink. Of the silence. Of the men who wear gold.

The men who wear gold.

I know them. I know their smell. It is the smell of perfume and fear. I know their weight. It is the weight of a sword that has never been drawn. I am the low one. I am the dog. I sniff the ground. I find the bones. They throw the bones to me. I eat them. I grow strong. They are safe. I am the shield.

Elias looks up. His eyes are wet. They are dark. They are deep. There is a light in them. It is not the light of the fire. It is the light of the dream.

I have seen it, Thomas.

Seen what?

The edge. The boundary. The line where the truth ends. And the lie begins.

Truth does not end. Lie does not begin. They are one. They are the rope.

Elias laughs. It is a dry sound. It is the sound of leaves scraping on stone. You are a fool, Thomas. You think you are the rope. You think you hold the world together. You are the fraying. You are the wear.

I do not answer. I listen to the wind. The wind is outside. It is cold. It bites at the shutters. It wants in. It wants to freeze the breath in our lungs.

We are in the court. We are in the shadow of the throne. The King is sick. The King is old. His crown sits loose on his head. It slides to the side. He sees it. He does not fix it. He smiles. It is a thin smile. It is a cruel smile. He knows we are watching. He knows we are waiting.

The Lord Chancellor is here. His name is Aldous. He is tall. He is pale. He wears white. White is the color of death. White is the color of bone. He speaks softly. His voice is smooth. It is like oil. It is like ice.

My Lord, the evidence is clear.

Is it? The King asks.

It is iron, Your Grace. It is stone. It is fact.

Facts are like water. They take the shape of the vessel.

Aldous bows. He is precise. He is perfect. He is a machine. He has no soul. Or he has buried it so deep we cannot dig it out. I look at Elias. Elias looks at his hands. His hands are still. The trembling has stopped. He is ready.

I go to the archives. I go alone. The air is stale. The dust is thick. I breathe it in. It coats my throat. I feel the grit. I feel the weight. I am looking for the ledger. The ledger of debts. The ledger of sins. It is hidden. It is buried. It is under the floorboards.

I dig. I use my knife. I use my hands. My nails break. I do not care. The blood seeps out. It mixes with the dust. It turns to mud. I find the hole. I lift the board. The darkness is cold. It reaches up. It grabs my wrist. I pull free. I look into the hole.

There is a box. It is lead. It is heavy. It is sealed. The seal is broken. It is old. It is worn. The edges are soft. The edges are thin. It is the rope. It is the boundary. It is the thing that holds and breaks at the same time.

I bring it to Elias. We are in the cellar again. The fire is out. The dark is total. We sit in the black. We sit in the cold.

Open it.

I am afraid.

Open it.

Elias lifts the lid. He lifts it slowly. The sound is a groan. The sound is a moan. He reaches in. He pulls out a scroll. The paper is yellow. The paper is brittle. He unfolds it. He holds it to his eyes. He reads. He reads in the dark. He does not need light.

Thomas.

What?

This is not treason.

What is it?

It is mercy.

I do not understand.

Aldous did not steal the gold. He gave it away. He gave it to the poor. He gave it to the sick. He gave it to the dead. He burned the books. He burned the names. He saved us.

From whom?

From the King.

The King is good.

The King is hungry. The King is cold. The King is a beast. He eats his children. He eats his court. He eats the land. Aldous is the rope. He is the boundary. He keeps the beast in the cage. He keeps the beast from us.

I am silent. I am heavy. I am the stone. I am the wall. I am the thing that blocks. I am the thing that stands.

Why did you not tell me?

Because you would not listen. Because you are the law. Because the law does not ask. The law only takes.

I feel the heat in my face. I feel the shame. It is cold. It is sharp. It cuts. I look at Elias. He is young. He is soft. He is the heart. I am the shield. I have forgotten what the shield is for. I have thought it was to strike. It is to protect.

We must go to the King.

No.

Why?

Because the truth is a poison. If you give it to him, he will die. If he dies, the cage breaks. If the cage breaks, we die.

Then what do we do?

We do nothing.

We do nothing?

We let the rope fray. We let the boundary wear. We let the lie stand. We let the king eat. We let the king rule. We survive.

I cannot.

You can. You are the Hound. You hunt. You find. You report. You report that the trail is cold. You report that the scent is gone. You report that the beast is at rest.

I am a liar.

You are a survivor.

I look at the scroll. I look at the words. They are ink. They are marks. They are nothing. They are everything. I burn them. I hold the paper to the last ember. The paper curls. The paper blackens. The paper turns to ash. The ash falls. The ash settles. It is the dust of justice. It is the dust of mercy.

I go to the King. I walk through the halls. The halls are long. The halls are wide. The stone is cold. The stone is hard. I walk fast. I walk hard. I am the Hound. I am the nose. I am the tooth.

The King is on the throne. The Chancellor is beside him. They watch me. They wait. They are statues. They are ghosts.

My King.

Speak, Thomas.

The trail is cold.

Is that all?

The scent is gone.

The beast?

The beast is at rest.

The King smiles. The Chancellor smiles. They are the same. They are the mirror. I am the reflection. I am the lie. I am the truth. I am the rope.

I leave the throne room. I do not look back. I do not look up. I look at my feet. I look at the stone. I step. I step. I step. The stone is wet. The stone is slick. I slip. I fall. I hit the ground. I do not get up. I stay down. I am the dirt. I am the mud. I am the base.

Elias finds me. He carries me. He is strong. He is fierce. He is the fire. He puts me in my bed. He washes my face. He washes my hands. He washes the blood. He washes the dust.

You are free, Thomas.

Am I?

Yes.

Is it over?

Yes.

Is it right?

No.

Is it true?

Yes.

I close my eyes. I dream of the rope again. It is not burning. It is not biting. It is hanging. It is still. It is waiting. It is the boundary. It is the edge. It is the place where I end. And the world begins.

I am tired. I am old. I am the wear. I am the fray. I am the end of the line. I am the silence. I am the dark.

I am the Hound. And the hunt is done.

The wind is outside. It is quiet. It is soft. It is a whisper. It is a breath. It is the breath of the earth. It is the breath of the dead. It is the breath of the living. It is the breath of the lie. It is the breath of the truth.

I sleep. I do not wake. I do not wake. I do not wake.

The rope holds. The rope holds. The rope holds.

Until it does not.

Until it does not.

Until it does not.
