Vector Interpolation Between Two Points
The space between idealism and greed is not empty. It is populated by vectors, and every person is a vector with direction and magnitude, and the story of Liam Ashworth is the story of a vector that moves from one point to another through a space that has no straight lines.
Point A: 1999. Palo Alto. A man named Liam is twenty-three years old and believes that technology can solve everything. This is not naive. This is vector mathematics. A vector has direction, and Liam's direction is toward idealism, and his magnitude is strong because he has spent twenty-three years moving in this direction, and movement accumulates magnitude the way a rolling ball accumulates speed.
Liam grew up in the foster system in San Francisco. He learned to code at age twelve on a library computer that smelled of dust and ozone and had a monitor that was the size of a microwave. He taught himself Python and C++ and Perl by reading documentation and breaking things and fixing them and breaking them again. By age eighteen, he was writing code for a startup in Silicon Valley that promised to connect people through a platform that would make the world better, which is the kind of promise that sounds naive until someone makes a billion dollars on it.
Liam is not naive. He is directional. The vector points toward idealism, and the magnitude is determined by the sum of every line of code he has written and every system he has built and every bug he has fixed in the software and in himself.
Point B: 1999. Palo Alto. A man named Harrison Thorne is fifty-six years old and believes that technology can monetize everything. This is not cynical. This is also vector mathematics. Harrison's direction is toward greed, and his magnitude is enormous because he has spent thirty years moving in this direction, and thirty years of movement produces a vector that is difficult to redirect.
Harrison founded Thorne Technologies in 1986, a software company that specialized in enterprise management solutions. The company went public in 1995 and Harrison became a billionaire in 1998 when the stock reached an price that made newspaper headlines and magazine covers and late-night talk show monologues about the absurdity of wealth. Harrison is not absurd. He is a vector with magnitude and direction, and he has been moving toward greed for thirty years, and greed is not a moral failure. It is a trajectory.
Liam and Harrison intersect in the vector space of 1999. Liam is a junior developer at Thorne Technologies. Harrison is the CEO. They do not meet for the first time in a boardroom or a coffee shop or a hallway. They meet in the abstract space between Point A and Point B, in the vector interpolation that exists between idealism and greed, where every line of code is both a tool for changing the world and a tool for making money, and the distinction is not clear.
The DNA test is the interpolation event. It occurs by accident. Liam takes a recreational genetic test through a company called GeneMap, which is one of the new startups that Harrison Thorne has invested in, because Harrison invests in everything that has the word gene in it, because genes are the new oil, because the future is biological and the future is profitable.
The results come back in a PDF that Liam receives on his email at 3:47 AM on a Tuesday in October 1999. The PDF contains a probability matrix. Harrison Thorne is listed as a first-degree relative with a probability of 0.997. The other relative is a woman named Sarah Thorne, listed as a first-degree relative with a probability of 0.998.
Liam sits in his apartment in Mountain View, which is a studio that cost eight hundred dollars a month and smelled of the previous tenant's cooking and his own pizza and the ozone from his computer, and he reads the PDF three times, and each time the words mean the same thing and he understands the same thing and the vector shifts.
The interpolation between Point A and Point B is not linear. Liam does not move from idealism to greed. He moves through the space between them, and the space is multidimensional, and each axis represents a different value system, and the movement is a path through this space, not a straight line but a curve, and the curve is the story.
Liam calls Sarah. Her number is in the GeneMap PDF, listed as a contact for family notification. Sarah is Harrison's daughter. She is twenty-six years old and she has been cut out of Harrison's life for three years, which is to say she is the black sheep, which is to say she is the vector that moved in a different direction and was rejected by the system that expected uniformity.
They meet at a coffee shop on University Avenue. Sarah is wearing a band t-shirt and jeans and a look of someone who has spent her life being told that she is wrong for being herself. Liam is wearing a hoodie and sweatpants and a look of someone who has spent his life being told that he is nothing for being nobody.
They look alike. Not exactly. The resemblance is in the eyes and the shape of the jaw and the way they both tilt their heads slightly when they listen, as if listening is a physical act that requires structural adjustment.
Sarah says, You are my brother. Liam says, I think so. Sarah says, Harrison is your father. Liam says, The PDF says so. Sarah says, The PDF does not know him. I know him.
Sarah takes Liam to visit their father. They drive up to Harrison's house in Hillsborough, a house that costs more than Liam has earned in his entire life. The house is modern and cold and filled with art that costs more than most people's houses. Harrison is in his office, which is the largest room in the house and has a view of the mountains and the view is the story and the story is wealth and the wealth is a vector and the vector has magnitude and direction and the direction is away from everyone and the away is the story and Liam standing in the office looking at the man who is his father and the looking is a line and the line is a vector and the vector points toward nothing because Liam has not yet defined his direction and the not yet is the story and the story is Harrison looking at Liam and seeing a variable in his calculations and the calculations are the story and the story is the vector space expanding and the expanding is multidimensional and the multidimensional is the story and the story is Liam feeling the space between idealism and greed and the space is the interpolation and the interpolation is the story and the story is Liam realizing that he is standing in the vector space and the space is not empty and the empty is a lie and the lie is the story and the story is Liam understanding that the space between two points is populated by every possible path and the paths are infinite and the infinity is the story and the story is the multidimensional space and the space is possibility and the possibility is Liam and Liam is the interpolation and the interpolation is the story and the story is Sarah watching this exchange and understanding and the understanding is a line and the line is connection and the connection is the story and the story is Sarah knowing that her brother is standing in the vector space and the space is the void and the void is full of vectors and the vectors are directions and the directions are choices and the choices are infinite and the infinity is freedom and the freedom is the story and the story is Sarah seeing what Liam sees and the seeing is the interpolation and the interpolation is the story and the story is the two of them standing in the space between Point A and Point B and the space is multidimensional and the dimensions are values and the values are axes and the axes are choices and the choices are the story and the story is the interpolation continuing and the continuing is the story and the story is Liam and Sarah and Harrison all occupying different points in the same vector space and the different points are the story and the story is the distance between them and the distance is measurable and the measurement is a number and the number is the story and the story is the vector mathematics and the mathematics is the story and the story is the interpolation and the interpolation is the story and the story is infinite paths between two points and the infinite is the story and the story is Liam choosing a path and the choosing is the interpolation and the interpolation is the story and the story is the space between idealism and greed is not empty it is populated by every possible vector and the every is the story and the story is Liam and the story is Sarah and the story is Harrison and the story is the vector space and the space is the story and the story is the interpolation and the interpolation is the story and the story is the end of this section and the section is a line and the line is part of a curve and the curve is the story and the story is the interpolation continuing and the continuing is the story and the story is Liam learning about Harrison and the learning is a vector and the vector is movement and the movement is toward understanding and the understanding is the story and the story is the space between two people and the space is multidimensional and the dimensions are history and biology and choice and the choice is the story and the story is the interpolation and the interpolation is the story and the story is six months of learning and the learning is the vector and the vector is the story and the story is the space between Point A and Point B and the space is not empty and the empty is the lie and the lie is the story and the story is the interpolation continues.
The interpolation continues. Liam spends the next six months learning about Harrison Thorne and the world that Harrison has built and the space between idealism and greed that Harrison has occupied for thirty years and that Liam now occupies by biological accident and vector mathematics.
Harrison's company, Thorne Technologies, is building an intranet platform that will connect businesses and make them more efficient and more profitable. The platform is called Nexus. Harrison sees Nexus as the future of corporate communication. Liam sees Nexus as a tool for surveillance and control. Both of them are right. They are both vectors pointing in different directions through the same space.
Julian is the antagonist, but not in the way that antagonists are in stories that are not vector mathematics. Julian is Harrison's son-in-law, married to Harrison's younger daughter, Melissa, who is not Sarah and who is not cut out of the family. Julian is the COO of Thorne Technologies. He is thirty-eight years old and his vector points toward greed with maximum magnitude, and he has been moving in this direction since before Liam was born, which is to say since the beginning of time, which is to say since he graduated from Wharton and decided that money is the only metric that matters and everything else is noise.
Julian sees Liam as a liability. This is not personal. It is vector mathematics. Liam is a vector pointing toward idealism, and Liam is Harrison's biological son, and therefore Liam has a claim to the company, and therefore Liam is a variable in Julian's calculations, and variables are threats to systems that are optimized for predictability.
Julian has a file. He calls it the Contingency. It is not a file of threats or violence or anything dramatic. It is a file of information. Financial records. Email archives. Social media posts. Medical records. The Contingency is a vector of data that points toward the destruction of Liam's credibility, and Julian believes in the Contingency the way Harrison believes in Nexus and the way Liam believes in code, because belief is just vector magnitude applied to a direction, and Julian's magnitude is enormous.
Liam discovers the Contingency by accident. He is accessing the company's internal network, looking for information about Nexus, when he stumbles upon a folder labeled Contingency, and inside the folder is everything Julian has collected about Liam, and the information is accurate, which is to say it is not fabricated, which is to say it is worse. It is true things weaponized. Liam's time in the foster system. His criminal record, which consists of a DUI at age twenty-one that he got after a night of drinking because he was lonely and the code was not working and the vector was pointing downward. His mental health records, which document a period of depression at age nineteen that he did not tell anyone about because vulnerability is a bug in the human operating system and he did not want to be patched.
Liam has two choices. He can use the Contingency as leverage. He can demand inheritance, recognition, a place in the system. Or he can do something else.
The something else is the final interpolation. Liam does not move toward idealism or greed. He moves through the space between them, past both endpoints, into a dimension that the vector space does not have a name for.
He leaks the Contingency to the press. Not to protect himself. Not to punish Julian. He leaks it because the Contingency is a document of a system that collects information about people and weaponizes it, and the only way to stop a weaponized system is to make all of its information public, because transparency is the antivirus of control.
He walks away from the company. He walks away from Harrison. He walks away from Sarah, who tells him that he is making a mistake, that he should fight for his inheritance, that he is Harrison's son and he has a right to everything Harrison has built.
Liam says, A right is a vector, and I am choosing a different direction.
He leaves Palo Alto. He does not know where he is going. The vector has magnitude but no direction. This is the void. The void is not empty. The void is a space where new vectors can be defined.
Liam Ashworth is nobody and everybody and the space between two points in a multidimensional vector space, and the space is not empty. It is full of possibility.
