The Wistful Show

The hall was vast. Stone walls. High ceilings. Dust motes danced in the shafts of moonlight. It was a feast. But no one ate. The King sat on the throne. He did not smile. His face was stone.

In the shadows stood Caelen. He wore a crown of thorns. It was made of iron. It cut his scalp. Blood trickled down his neck. He held a single object. A bird. It was alive. It was blue. Its wings were folded. It did not sing. It watched.

The courtiers whispered. They pointed. They hissed. They knew him. They hated him. He was a prisoner. A criminal. A traitor. The King’s eye was cold. It found Caelen. It did not blink.

“Bring him forward,” the King said. His voice was dry. Like dead leaves.

Caelen walked. His steps were heavy. The floor shook. The bird shivered. It was his mirror. It was his soul. Trapped. Silent. Blue.

The crowd parted. Fear was thick. It smelled of rot. Caelen reached the dais. He knelt. The iron crown scraped the stone. He did not look up. He looked at the bird. Its eye was black. It reflected him.

“Speak,” the King commanded.

Caelen said nothing. He could not. The disease was in his throat. It was a curse. It burned. It ate his words. It was the price. He had chosen this. Years ago. In the dark. He had bargained with the wind. He had sold his voice for her life. She was gone now. The wind took her. The wind kept her.

The King stood. He walked down the steps. He was tall. He was old. His robes were red. They were heavy with dust. He stopped before Caelen. He leaned down. The smell of incense was strong. It was cloying.

“You stole the Star,” the King said.

Caelen nodded. Yes. He had stolen it. It was not a gem. It was a memory. It was the night she laughed. The night the rain stopped. He kept it safe. In the cage of his mind. But the bird was here. The bird was the proof.

The King touched the bird. His finger was cold. The bird opened its beak. No sound came out. Only a vibration. A low hum. It shook the air. It shook the King’s hand.

The King pulled back. He looked at his hand. It was trembling. Fear? No. Recognition. He knew the hum. He had heard it. In his dreams. In the deep places of the castle. It was the sound of the end.

“The court will judge,” the King said. He turned. He walked away. The red robes swished. The crowd gasped. Justice was coming. Death was coming.

Caelen looked at the bird. He held it tighter. The thorns cut deeper. Blood dripped onto the stone. The bird closed its eye. It was tired. It was ready.

The trial began. The prosecutor spoke. He was loud. He was sharp. He listed the crimes. Theft. Treason. Sorcery. The words flew like knives. They missed Caelen. They hit the air. They died there.

Caelen listened. He did not defend himself. He could not. The disease ate his tongue. It ate his will. It ate his hope. He only felt the bird. Its heartbeat was slow. It matched his own. Two hearts. One rhythm.

The King watched. He did not blink. He did not breathe. He was a statue. He was the stone. He was the wall.

The prosecutor finished. He waited. The silence was loud. It was a roar. It filled the hall. It filled the chests. It filled the souls.

Caelen raised his head. The blood in his eyes was red. The bird’s feathers were blue. The colors mixed. They made purple. It was the color of twilight. It was the color of end.

He opened his mouth. No sound came. Only a breath. A sigh. It carried the scent of rain. It carried the scent of her. The scent of the past.

The King’s eyes widened. He saw the rain. He saw the past. He saw the girl. She was there. In the air. In the scent. She was not dead. She was everywhere. She was the wind. She was the sky.

The King’s face crumbled. The stone cracked. The red robes turned gray. He fell to his knees. The courtiers screamed. They ran. They fled. The hall was empty. Only the King and Caelen. Only the two.

The King looked at Caelen. There was no anger. There was no hate. There was only grief. Deep. Old. Heavy.

“I remember,” the King whispered. His voice was broken. Like glass.

Caelen nodded. The bird fluttered. It opened its wings. They were not blue anymore. They were white. They were light. They were free.

The King wept. Tears fell. They hit the stone. They hissed. They steamed. The disease in Caelen’s throat burned. It was gone. The curse was lifted. The price was paid. Not in blood. Not in life. In truth.

The bird flew. It rose. It spiraled. It climbed. It passed through the high ceiling. It passed through the stars. It was gone. It was with her.

Caelen stood. His legs were weak. He swayed. The iron crown was gone. It had melted. It had turned to ash. It was in his hair. It was in his skin. He was free. He was empty.

The King looked up. He saw the hole in the ceiling. The stars were bright. The moon was full. The night was deep.

“You were right,” the King said.

Caelen smiled. It was small. It was sad. It was true. He had not stolen the Star. He had returned it. He had given it back. To the sky. To the wind. To her.

The King stood. He was old. He was tired. He looked at Caelen. He saw his own shadow. He saw his own sin. He saw his own release.

“Go,” the King said.

Caelen walked. He walked to the door. The door was open. The night was cold. The night was bright. He stepped out. He did not look back.

The King stayed. He sat on the steps. He watched the sky. The stars were cold. They were distant. They were eternal.

He was alone. The court was gone. The power was gone. The throne was empty. It was dust. It was stone.

He closed his eyes. He felt the wind. It touched his face. It was soft. It was gentle. It was her. It was him. It was everything.

The feast was over. The hunger was gone. The silence was full. It was complete. It was enough.

Caelen walked into the dark. The path was long. The road was hard. He did not care. He was light. He was air. He was free. The bird was with him. It was in his chest. It beat with him. It sang with him. It was the song of the end. It was the song of the beginning.

The King opened his eyes. The moon was setting. The light was fading. The dark was coming. It was not black. It was blue. It was the color of the bird. It was the color of the soul.

He did not move. He did not speak. He waited. He accepted. He was defeated. He was at peace. The truth was visible. It was clear. It was bright. It was the only thing that mattered.

The story was told. The tale was done. The wind blew on. It carried the dust. It carried the scent. It carried the memory. It carried the love. It was primal. It was instinct. It was beyond reason. It was eternal.

Caelen was gone. The King was there. The stone was cold. The night was deep. The star was high. The bird was free. The cage was open. The door was closed. The journey was ended. The rest was begun.

The silence held. The silence kept. The silence sang. The silence died. The silence lived. It was the end. It was the start. It was the now. It was the forever. It was the wistful show. It was the true show. It was the only show.

The King smiled. It was faint. It was real. He closed his eyes. He let the dark in. He let the wind in. He let her in. He was gone. He was there. He was everything. He was nothing. He was the stone. He was the dust. He was the star. He was the bird. He was the song. He was the silence. He was the peace. He was the end.
