Mr. Rashid had bought the shop in 1978 from a Jewish family named Cohen who had run it since 1921, and the Cohens had bought it from a German family named Schultz who had run it since 1898, and the Schultzes had been disliked for being foreign and the Cohens had been disliked for being foreign and now Mr. Rashid was disliked for being foreign, and he accepted this as the price of doing business in a country that had built an empire on foreignness and then decided it did not like the look of it up close. Edie Brennan was the first white person on Cordelia Street who had treated Mr. Rashid as a neighbor rather than a problem. Tommy Brewer was thirty-seven and he lived at number 12 Cordelia Street, three doors down from Edie Brennan, and he had been a docker, born to a docker, grandson to a docker, the lineage of dockers stretching back to the 1880s when the West India Docks were built and the Irish came over to dig them and stayed to work them and died in them and were buried in the Catholic cemeteries at Leyton and St. Patrick's and eventually in the common earth that received dockers and their families without regard to denomination because the earth was not Catholic or Protestant, the earth was only earth, the most democratic thing in the East End. Tommy Brewer had been made redundant in 1980 when the West India Docks closed, the closure being one of the thousand closures that had swept through the East End since the 1960s, the docks and the warehouses and the factories and the printing works and the breweries, all of them closing one after the other like lights going out in a house where no one could pay the electric bill. He had a wife and two boys and a redundancy cheque that had lasted three months and then been gone, and he had spent the four years since going from job to job, an agency shift here, a cash-in-hand day there, the work being intermittent and unreliable and paid at rates that were lower than the dole and higher than nothing, which was the choice the East End had offered him and which he had taken because there was no third option. Edie Brennan had been the person who found him work. She knew a man who knew a man who needed a driver for a van that moved furniture from repossessed flats, and she knew a woman who knew a woman who needed a pair of hands to clear out a warehouse in Hackney, and she knew the foreman at a building site in Bow who would take on a docker if the docker showed up on time and worked hard and did not ask about the paperwork. Darren MacIntyre was nineteen and he lived at number 28, the ground-floor flat with the boarded-up front window that had been boarded up since the riots in 1981, the riots having started in Brixton and spread to the East End and reached Cordelia Street on a Saturday night in July, a night of fire and broken glass and young men who had nothing to lose fighting policemen who had everything to prove, the formula being as old as the East End and the outcome being the same, a few arrests and a few injuries and a boarded-up window that would stay boarded up for four years because the landlord did not live on Cordelia Street and did not care about the window and did not care about the residents, the landlord being a company registered in the Channel Islands and the company being a tax shelter and the tax shelter being the actual point of the building, the human beings who lived inside it being an incidental byproduct of the financial arrangement. He had been approached by a man in a pub on Commercial Road, a man with a shaved head and a bomber jacket and the cross of St. George tattooed on his forearm, a man who told Darren that the problem was the blacks and the problem was the Asians and the problem was the Jews and the problem was the immigrants who were taking the jobs and the homes and the country and the future and giving nothing back except trouble, and the man had made sense in the way that simple explanations always made sense to boys who were nineteen and had nothing and were being told that their nothing was someone else's fault. Darren had gone to two meetings of the National Front, the meetings being held in the back room of a pub in Bethnal Green, the pub being the Rose and Crown and the back room being the size of a large cupboard and filled with men who looked like they had been angry for so long that they had forgotten what they were angry about, the cause having been replaced by the practice, the practice being hatred and the hatred being a job, a full-time occupation for men with no other occupation. Edie Brennan had found out about the meetings through the network, the network being a thing that transmitted information through the street faster than the Post Office, the information being carried by the woman at number 15 whose son had seen Darren coming out of the Rose and Crown and by the man at number 33 whose brother was a barman at the Rose and Crown and had heard the chanting from the back room. Edie Brennan had knocked on Darren's door one evening in January 1985, and she had sat at his kitchen table, and she had not argued with him and had not lectured him and had not told him he was wrong, not in those words. She had talked to him about the docks where her husband Frank had worked, and the men Frank had worked beside, men who were Jamaican and Somali and Maltese and Indian and Irish and English, men who had been dockers and nothing else, the job being the thing that made them a crew and not the color of their skin or the name of their country or the god they prayed to if they prayed at all. She had told Darren that the men in the back room of the Rose and Crown were not offering him a job, they were offering him an enemy, and the enemy was the only thing they would ever offer him, and once he had accepted the enemy he would never get anything else, the enemy would be his whole life, his food and his drink and his work and his leisure and his future, an endless loop of grievance leading to violence leading to more grievance leading to more violence, the loop being a kind of slavery and the slavery being the thing the men in the back room wanted for him. Darren had stopped going to the meetings. He had not become a better person in any dramatic sense. He had simply stopped going to the meetings, and the not-going was a kind of opening, a crack in the wall that let in a little light, and the light was the possibility that his life could be something other than the anger that the men in the back room were selling.
When Edie Brennan died, no one knocked on Darren's door to check on him. No one asked where he had been or what he was doing or whether the men in the back room had come back with a better offer or a stronger argument or a free pint. The woman at number 15 did not mention his name to anyone because Edie Brennan was not there to ask. The man at number 33 did not watch the Rose and Crown because Edie Brennan was not there to receive the report. And Darren, nineteen years old and alone and scared in a way he could not name and would never learn to name, started going back to the meetings, and by June he was a member of the National Front, and by August he had a tattoo of the cross of St. George on his forearm, the same tattoo the man in the pub had, the same tattoo his father had, the same tattoo his grandfather had, the tattoo that was not a political statement but an inheritance, a thing passed down from father to son like the flat in number 28 or the boarded-up window or the rage that had no object and no outlet and no end.
Kate Brennan was thirty-one, and she was Edie Brennan's daughter, and she had left Cordelia Street in 1973 when she was nineteen, had left on a bus from Mile End to King's Cross and a train from King's Cross to Leeds and a taxi from Leeds station to the halls of residence where she would live for the next three years, had left the East End with her mother's voice in her ears saying go and her own voice in her head saying don't come back and her grandmother's voice in her memory saying the Brennan women have always stayed and the three voices at war with each other and Kate not knowing which voice was right and deciding that none of them was right and all of them were right and the decision was hers. She called the social worker about Angie's children and she went down to the council offices on a Tuesday and sat in the waiting room for three hours and argued for an hour and got nowhere, the council being a machine and Kate being a single person and the machine being designed to outlast single persons. She went to the Rose and Crown and she asked about Darren and they told her he had not been seen for weeks and she walked home in the rain and she did not know if she had failed or if the failure was older than her and larger than her and nothing to do with her. She kept working. She called people from the notebooks, one after another, the names and numbers that were still current, the people who were still alive and still on Cordelia Street, and she listened to them, and she wrote down what they needed, and she tried to connect them to each other — the man on the third floor who could fix a boiler, the woman two streets over who could watch children, the retired council clerk who knew how to fill out a housing form. The network had been damaged and it could not be repaired, not fully, not the way her mother had run it, because her mother was the hub and the hub was gone and the hub could not be replaced, the network having been her mother's body and her mother's memory and her mother's love, the three things being the same thing and the three things being gone. But the threads were still there, strands of connection that had not snapped, and Kate Brennan held onto them, one by one, and tried to weave them back together, not into the same shape and not into the same strength but into something, into anything, into a thing that could hold a neighborhood together for one more week or one more month or one more year, the time being all that anyone ever had and the holding being all that anyone could do.
