ACT I
The light was green the way only electricity can be green when it should not be—a colour that exists in the gap between what the eye expects and what the eye receives. James Whitmore stood in the drawing room doorway of the Kensington townhouse and watched it happen the way a man watches a car accident in slow motion, his brain refusing to process the data his eyes were sending.
The sphere hovered at shoulder height. It was perhaps the size of a basketball, glowing with that impossible green luminescence, and it drifted through the closed French windows as though the glass had never been there at all. The air filled with the sharp smell of ozone, the kind that follows a lightning strike. Eleanor, standing by the piano with a half-finished cup of tea in her hand, turned toward the light with an expression of mild curiosity, the same expression she would have given a particularly interesting insect.
Then the sphere touched her.
There was no sound, exactly. There was a tone, pure and sustained, like a struck bell heard through water. And then silence.
On the Persian rug, where Eleanor had been standing a moment before, lay two piles of fine white powder. Not ash. Not dust. Something that had been a human being and was no longer. "If confirmed," James had echoed. Because he knew what Croft meant. One data point was not confirmation. One dead dog was not a paradigm shift. He needed more. He needed to understand the mechanism. He needed to know whether the sphere was a natural phenomenon or something else entirely.
Eleanor had supported him from the beginning. She was a botanist by training, though she had never practiced professionally—she had married James and made his work her work, the way women did in their generation without necessarily calling it by that name. She loved the laboratory even though she did not understand it. In theory, it could concentrate a sphere's energy, amplify it, make it visible to the naked eye even in daylight. In practice, it had killed Eleanor.
After the funeral, James stopped caring about theory. He cared about one thing: the sphere had passed through Eleanor and reduced her to powder, but James had observed something in the fraction of a second before she vanished. Her expression had not been one of pain. It had been one of recognition. As though, for that instant, Eleanor had understood something about what the sphere was doing to her, and had accepted it.

James had resisted. Croft had resisted. But Harrington had applied pressure that neither of them could withstand, and the demonstration was scheduled for the eighteenth of October.
The night before the demonstration, James returned to the laboratory alone. He opened the lead-lined container. The white powder caught the lamplight and turned it green for a fraction of a second—James's imagination, he knew, but the moment was so vivid that he could not be certain it was only his imagination. Somewhere in the quantum foam of the luminous sphere, in the space between states of matter, Eleanor existed. Not as a body. Not as a person in any conventional sense. But as information. As pattern. As something that had been and was not yet nothing.
The demonstration was a disaster and a triumph. The amplified sphere penetrated every target—armor, concrete, steel—with ease. The military observers were ecstatic. After the demonstration, James knew what he had to do. The military wanted to weaponize the sphere. They wanted to build an army of them, to turn them into penetrating charges and siege weapons and whatever else their imagination could devise. He would not let them. But he also could not destroy his life's work. There was only one solution that made sense to a man who had already lost his mind to grief.
He would step into the field himself. He would let the amplifier focus on him, not on a target. He would become the penetrating agent. And if Eleanor existed in the quantum realm, he would find her there. He would bring her back, or he would join her. Either outcome was preferable to the life he was living.
ACT IV
Lady Margaret found the laboratory at dawn. The door had been unlocked. The lamps were still burning. On the workbench sat the notebook—James's notebook, the one filled with equations and sketches and the occasional note to himself in a handwriting that grew more desperate as the pages turned.
The amplifier was cold. The Leyden jars had been discharged. And in the center of the room, on the stone floor where James had stood the night before, was a pile of fine white powder. Not much. Maybe a pound. Margaret did not know what it was. She called Inspector Hale of Scotland Yard, who arrived with two constables and an expression of profound inconvenience.
Hale was a practical man. He had seen murder, suicide, and the occasional accident involving gas lamps and exploding boilers. He did not know what to do with a man who had turned himself into powder in a room full of copper wires. He took samples. He took photographs.
