The Green Line
The winter of 1957 in New York was the kind of winter that got inside you and stayed there. Jack Donovan felt it in his knuckles, cracked and bleeding from the cold and from punching walls he did not want anyone to hear him punch.
He was thirty-five years old and he worked as an assistant secretary in the New York City municipal government, a position that gave him access to contracts worth millions of dollars and a moral compass that pointed in whatever direction the money was flowing.
The contract was for the new housing project in Queens. It was a massive undertaking—three thousand units, concrete and steel and glass, rising out of the neighbourhoods that had been here for decades and would be gone by the time the first families moved in. Jack's job was to make sure the right contractor won. Not the lowest bidder. Not the most qualified. The right one. The one who understood that in New York, the right person was always the one who knew the right people.
And Jack knew the right people. He knew Frank Russo, a detective with the NYPD who knew everyone who mattered in Tammany Hall. He knew Frank LaSalle, a union boss who controlled the construction workers' local. He knew Senator O'Malley, who controlled the state senate appropriations committee. And he knew FBI Agent Miller, who controlled nothing but pretended to.
Miller had recruited Jack six months ago. "We need someone inside," Miller had said, sitting in a diner on 42nd Street, his coffee untouched. "Someone who can tell us which contracts are dirty and which ones are just New York dirty."
Jack had agreed. He had told himself it was for the country. He had told himself he was gathering intelligence. He had not told himself the truth, which was that he was doing it because it paid well and because it made him feel important and because in New York, important was the only thing that kept you warm at night.
The Warner Electric navigation unit arrived on a Monday. It was wrapped in newspaper and delivered by a boy who could not have been older than twelve. Jack signed for it at the front desk of his apartment building in Hell's Kitchen. The building was a walk-up on 44th Street, fourth floor, the kind of place where the heat worked in the winter only if you begged it nicely.
Jack carried the package up the stairs. His father Pat was already inside, sitting in the armchair by the window, watching the street below. Pat was sixty-five years old and his hands were the hands of a man who had spent forty years loading and unloading ships at the Brooklyn docks. His knuckles were swollen, his fingernails were permanently stained with grease, and his hearing was going.
"What's that?" Pat asked.
"A gift," Jack said.
"From who?"
"From your mother. Before she died."
Jack had not told the truth. The navigation unit had been bought at a radio shop on Broadway with his own money. But some truths were too complicated for a man like Pat, who believed in simple things—honest work, honest pay, honest words.

Jack had nodded. He had learned long ago that nodding was the easiest way to avoid saying no.
On Thursday night, Jack met Maggie O'Brien at a bar on 46th Street. Maggie was thirty years old and she worked in the mayor's office as a secretary, a position that gave her access to the mayor's schedule and, more importantly, to the mayor's confidences. She was also married—to a man named Robert who was away on business and would not be back for a week.
Maggie and Jack had been meeting for three months. It was not love. It was not lust. It was something in between, the kind of thing that happens in cities where everyone is alone and everyone is surrounded by other people who are also alone.
"I heard something," Maggie said, stirring her drink without drinking it. "About the Queens contract."
"What did you hear?"
"Robert's boss is talking. Someone is leaking information to the press. About the contract. About the money."
Jack felt something move inside him—a small, cold thing that settled in his chest and made it harder to breathe. "Who is leaking?"
"I don't know. But it is not good for you, Jack."
Jack left the bar at midnight and drove home through the empty streets of Manhattan. The navigation unit was on the passenger seat, its screen dark. He looked at it and felt, for the first time, that the green line on the screen was not a route to a destination. It was a route to a trap.
Pat was waiting for him in the apartment. He was sitting in the armchair, as he always was, watching the street.
"I heard about the contract," Pat said.
Jack sat down on the sofa. "What did you hear?"
"I heard you are in trouble. And I heard that trouble in New York does not stay in one place. It spreads. Like a disease."
"I'm not in trouble."
"You are. You just do not know it yet."
Jack looked at his father. Pat's face was lined and weathered, the face of a man who had spent his life looking at water and wind and the faces of other men who were trying to make a living. Pat had seen things in his life—things that most men never see. He had seen men drown in the harbour. He had seen men beaten to death in alleyways. He had seen men stand at the edge of the Brooklyn Bridge and decide whether to jump.
"Tell me what to do," Jack said.
Pat shook his head. "I cannot tell you what to do. I can only tell you where to go."
Pat stood up and walked to the navigation unit. He pressed the power button. The screen lit up. The green line appeared. Pat reached out and touched the screen with a thick, calloused finger.
"This line," Pat said. "It goes somewhere. But do you know where it starts?"
Jack did not answer.
Pat pressed a button on the navigation unit. The screen changed. A new route appeared—a straight green line from Manhattan to Brooklyn.
"Your mother," Pat said, "used to say that every man in this family has to find his way back to Brooklyn at least once. Not because Brooklyn is perfect. But because it is where you started. And if you forget where you started, you will never know where you are going."
The next morning, Jack went to work. He sat at his desk and looked at the contract on the screen. The LaSalle contract. The one that would make him rich and destroy him. He opened his drawer and took out a piece of paper and wrote three words: I WILL NOT SIGN.
He put the paper in his pocket and walked out of the office. He did not go home. He went to Frank Russo's precinct, a building on Centre Street in Lower Manhattan that smelled like wet wool and stale coffee.
Russo was sitting at his desk, reading a newspaper. He looked up when Jack walked in.
"Jack Donovan," Russo said. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"
"I want to talk to Agent Miller."
Russo smiled. It was not a nice smile. "Miller does not talk to people like you. He talks to people like me."
"Then talk to him for me."
Russo put down his newspaper. "What do you want me to tell him?"
"Tell him I am done. Tell him I will not sign the contract. Tell him if he has a problem with it, he can come get me himself."
Russo was silent for a long time. Then he picked up his newspaper and started reading again.
Jack left the precinct and walked to his car. The navigation unit was on the passenger seat. He got in and pressed the power button. The screen lit up. The green line appeared.
But it was not the route to his office. It was the route to Brooklyn.
Jack started the engine and followed the green line. He drove through the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, into the streets of Brooklyn, past neighborhoods he had not seen in twenty years. Irish Slum. The old bar where his father used to take him. The dock where Pat had worked for forty years. The church where Jack had been baptized.
He pulled up in front of a small apartment building on 3rd Street. Pat was sitting in the passenger seat.
"Home," Pat said.
Jack sat in the car and looked at the apartment building. He did not get out. He did not turn around. He sat there while the navigation unit said, "You have arrived at your destination," and he wondered, for the first time in his life, whether destination was the same thing as home.
In the rearview mirror, he saw a black sedan pull up behind him. Two men got out. One of them was Agent Miller.
Jack did not move. He sat in the car, watching the apartment building, watching the window of the room where his father had been born, watching the place where the green line ended and something else began.
