The Faded Masquerade

The rain hits the tin roof of the depot. You are wet. Your boots are heavy. The mud sucks at your heels as you cross the yard. The air smells of coal smoke and wet iron. You are here to collect the ledger. The ledger is the truth. The truth is a weight. You carry it in your chest. It hurts.

You know what is in it. You have known for weeks. The numbers do not lie. The men do not lie. The system lies. You are a soldier. You serve the system. But the system is broken. It bleeds rust. It creaks like an old ship in a storm. You are the one who holds the rope. You are the one who keeps the mast from snapping. But the rope is fraying.

The office door is locked. You pick the lock. It is easy. The tumblers are worn. They are old. You are old in this job. Your hands are steady. Your mind is not.

Inside, the light is yellow. It is dim. The desk is oak. It is dark. You open the drawer. The ledger is there. Black cover. Gold lettering. It looks like a book of law. It is not law. It is debt.

You take it. You put it in your bag. The bag is leather. It is soft. It was a gift. From whom? You do not remember. Or you choose not to remember. You close the drawer. You leave the office. The door clicks shut.

You walk back to the yard. The rain has stopped. The clouds are low. They are grey. They press down on the town. The town is small. It is called Halloway. It is a place of iron and steam. The factories smoke. The smoke rises. It mixes with the fog. You cannot see the sun. You have not seen the sun in days.

You sit on a bench. You open the bag. You look at the ledger. You do not open it. You know what is inside. You do not need to read it. You have seen the faces. You have seen the eyes. They are hollow. They are empty. The men in the factory. The men in the mine. They are gone. They are not dead. They are gone. The ledger holds their names. The ledger holds their souls.

You are not the only one who knows. There is a man. His name is Silas. He is your friend. He is your brother in arms. He is a traitor. He told you. He gave you the key. He gave you the code. He is gone now. He ran. He fled the town. He left you here. He left you with the weight.

You think of Silas. He was brave. Or was he? He was afraid. He wanted to be free. He wanted to live. You do not want to be free. You want to be right. You want to be true. But truth is a curse. Truth is a blade. It cuts the hand that holds it.

A shadow moves. You look up. A figure stands in the fog. It is tall. It is thin. It wears a coat. It is black. The coat is long. It flaps in the wind. You know the coat. You have seen it before. It is the coat of the Inspector.

The Inspector is coming. He is always coming. He is the law. He is the order. He is the system. He is the machine. He does not have a face. Or he has many faces. He is the voice in the wall. He is the hand on the shoulder.

You stand up. Your knees crack. You are old. Your body is tired. You take out your pistol. It is heavy. It is cold. You hold it with both hands. You aim at the shadow. The shadow does not move. The shadow waits.

"Put it down," says a voice. It is calm. It is soft. It is like water. It is like wind.

"It is not mine," you say. Your voice is rough. It is dry.

"It is evidence," says the voice. "It is proof."

"Proof of what?" you ask. "Proof of their suffering? Proof of our guilt?"

"Proof of order," says the voice. "Order requires sacrifice. Order requires control. You know this. You are part of it."

"I am not part of it anymore," you say. "I am the end of it."

The shadow steps forward. The fog parts. You see the face. It is Silas.

Silas looks old. His hair is white. His eyes are red. He is not a traitor. He is a victim. He is the same as you. He is the same as the men in the ledger. He is broken.

"I am sorry," Silas says. "I am so sorry."

"Why are you here?" you ask. "Why did you run?"

"I couldn't stay," Silas says. "The weight. It is too heavy. It crushes you. It breaks you. I wanted to be free. I wanted to breathe."

"And now?" you ask.

"Now I am not free," Silas says. "The ledger is still here. The truth is still here. The truth does not disappear. It waits. It watches. It judges."

You lower the pistol. Your hand shakes. You are afraid. You are angry. You are sad. You feel it all. It is a storm inside you. It rages. It howls. It wants to break out.

"Give me the ledger," Silas says. "Let it go. Let us go. We can start again. We can be free."

You look at the bag. You look at the ledger. It is black. It is still. It is waiting.

"No," you say.

Silas’s face changes. It becomes hard. It becomes cold. "You are a fool," he says. "You are a soldier. You follow orders. You do not think. You do not feel. You are a machine."

"I am a man," you say. "And men must choose. I choose to stay. I choose to carry it."

"It will kill you," Silas says. "It will kill us all. The system will fall. And when it falls, we will be crushed. There will be no one left. There will be no order. There will be only chaos."

"Then let there be chaos," you say. "Let there be truth. Let there be pain. But let it be real. Let it be ours."

Silas laughs. It is a dry laugh. It is bitter. "You are lost," he says. "You are already lost. You died the moment you opened the drawer. You are a ghost. You are a memory. You are a mistake."

He turns away. He walks into the fog. His steps are slow. His feet sink in the mud. He does not look back. You watch him go. You watch him disappear. The fog takes him. The rain takes him. The world takes him.

You are alone. The yard is empty. The rain starts again. It is light. It is soft. It feels like tears. You feel wet. You feel cold. You feel empty.

You open the bag. You take out the ledger. You hold it in your hands. It is warm. It has your heat. It has your life. You look at the cover. The gold lettering is dull. It is faded. It is old.

You understand now. The ledger is not a book. It is a mirror. It shows you who you are. It shows you what you have done. It shows you what you have become. You are the keeper. You are the guardian. You are the prison.

You close the bag. You put the ledger inside. You button the bag. You hang it on your shoulder. It rests against your chest. It beats with you. It lives with you.

You walk out of the depot. The gate is open. The road is long. It leads out of town. It leads to the world. You do not go to the world. You go back to the house. You go back to your room. You sit on the bed. You wait.

The Inspector will come. He will find the ledger. He will know it is you. He will know you are the traitor. He will arrest you. He will take you to the cells. He will break you. He will silence you.

But you do not care. You are free. You are free because you are guilty. You are free because you are bound. You are free because you are the weight.

The clock on the wall ticks. Tick. Tick. Tick. The sound is loud. It is clear. It is final.

You close your eyes. You breathe. You are here. You are now. You are the truth.

The door opens. The light floods in. It is white. It is bright. It blinds you. You do not open your eyes. You do not move. You hold the bag. You hold the weight. You hold the soul.

"Come with me," says the voice. It is not Silas. It is the Inspector. It is the system. It is the law.

You stand up. You walk to the door. You walk into the light. You walk into the future. You walk into the end.

You do not look back. You do not look forward. You look inside. You see the ledger. You see the names. You see the faces. You see yourself.

You are the faded masquerade. You are the mask that remains. You are the truth that cannot be hidden. You are the curse that will not be lifted.

You walk. You carry. You endure.

The rain stops. The sun breaks through the clouds. It is a small sun. It is weak. It is pale. It shines on the wet ground. It shines on the iron. It shines on you.

You are a shadow. You are a light. You are a memory. You are a story.

You are alone. You are together. You are the end. You are the beginning.

The story is over. The story is just starting.

You take a step. You take another. You walk into the night. You walk into the silence. You walk into the truth.

It is enough. It is all you have. It is all you need.

You hold the bag. You hold the weight. You hold the world.

And you let go.
