The Temperature at Which Welcome Cools
The first thing to go was the dinner invitation.
For twelve years Dean Patterson and his wife Angela had hosted a September barbecue for all tenured faculty. Samir Khalil had attended every one since arriving at Midland State in 1993 — a newly minted PhD from Columbia with an accent that had mostly faded and a dissertation on the Andalusian lyric that nobody in the department had actually read but everyone agreed was "important work." He had stood on Patterson's back patio with a sweating bottle of Lebanese wine from the one specialty store in Indianapolis that carried it, and Angela had kissed both his cheeks and said "Samir, you know you're our favorite import."
The barbecue happened on the second Saturday of September 2005. Samir learned about it when he ran into Dean Patterson in the hallway of Farnsworth Hall on September 16th and asked, conversationally, how the lamb chops had turned out this year. Patterson's face did something Samir had never seen before — a micro-expression that lasted perhaps one-third of a second, in which the dean's features attempted to form three different responses simultaneously and settled on none of them.
"We kept it small this year," Patterson said. "Just department chairs. Budget constraints."
Samir nodded. It was a reasonable explanation. It was, in fact, the exact explanation you would give if you had kept the barbecue small for budget reasons. And it was also the exact explanation you would give if you had not invited Samir Khalil and needed a reason that could not be questioned.
That was the difficulty. Every single thing that happened over the next eight months would have a reasonable explanation. That was the mechanism. The enzyme did its work by being indistinguishable from circumstance.
He told Sarah about it that night. She was grading freshman compositions at the kitchen table — red pen, stack of papers, the same way she'd been grading them for fourteen years at Jefferson High — and she looked up with a expression that Samir recognized. It was the expression of someone who had been expecting this conversation.
"I'm Lebanese-American," Samir said. "Not Saudi. Not Iraqi. Not even Muslim. My mother was Maronite Catholic. I've never been to a mosque."
"You've never been to a church either," Sarah said. "It doesn't matter what you are. It matters what you look like when the evening news cuts to footage of the Green Zone."
She was right, of course. She was always right about these things — the small, painful calibrations of American life that Sarah, being from Iowa, understood at a cellular level. She had grown up in a town where "foreign" meant someone from Nebraska. But she had married a man named Samir Khalil in 1991, and she had learned.
The second thing was Layla's birthday party. Or rather, the absence of one.
Layla turned fourteen on October 3rd. For the previous four years, her birthday had been a production — rented pavilion at McCormick's Creek State Park, twenty-three girls from her grade, Sarah's famous tres leches cake that she'd learned from Samir's aunt in Dearborn. In 2004, three of the girls' mothers had stayed to help chaperone. In 2005, Samir mailed the invitations and received six RSVPs. On the day of the party, three girls came. Two of them were picked up early. One of them, Madison Brewer, stayed the whole time and helped Layla pack up the extra paper plates and unopened bags of chips. Madison's father was a long-haul trucker who was almost never home. Her mother had left when Madison was six. Madison, Layla told Samir later, said she knew what it felt like to be alone.
"Dad," Layla said in the car on the way home, "am I different now?"
"No," Samir said.
"Then why are people treating me different?"
Sarah reached back from the passenger seat and put her hand on Layla's knee. "People are scared, sweetheart. Scared people behave badly. It's not about you."
But of course it was about Layla. It was exactly about Layla. It was about the fact that Layla had her father's dark hair and her father's olive skin and her father's name on the class roster — Khalil, Layla — a name that four years ago had been "exotic" and "interesting" and now was "concerning" and "unfortunate." Nobody said these words. They didn't need to. The words were in the pauses between sentences, in the smiles that ended one beat too early, in the way Mrs. Hendricks at the PTA meeting now called her "Layla" instead of "Layla, sweetie."
The third thing was the drain.
This was the term Samir developed for it — the drain. Students dropping his courses. His fall 2005 enrollment had been twenty-eight across two seminars: "The Poetics of Exile" and "Arabic Literature in Translation." By the end of the add-drop period, "The Poetics of Exile" had eleven students and "Arabic Literature in Translation" had seven. The university required ten students for a course to "make." His department chair, a weary medievalist named Dr. Esther Kowalski who had been fighting budget battles since the Ford administration, called him into her office.
"Samir, you know I'm on your side," she said. She had a mug on her desk that said I SURVIVED THE 1982 BUDGET CUTS AND ALL I GOT WAS THIS LOUSY MUG. "But I have to combine your sections or cancel one of them. The provost's office is watching everything with a Middle Eastern prefix."
"Arabic is a language, Esther. It's not a political position."
"Tell that to the parents who called the provost's office. Three of them. Last week." She pushed a folder across the desk. "They didn't file formal complaints. They just 'expressed concern.' They wanted to know if we were teaching 'anti-American content.' In an Arabic literature course. Where the reading list is mostly eighth-century love poetry."
"Are you going to tell me to stop?"
"No." Esther sighed. "I'm going to tell you to be careful. I'm going to tell you that the provost has a file on every faculty member with what they call 'international sensitivities.' I'm going to tell you that I have seen this university destroy people with politeness and procedure, and I do not want you to be one of them. And I'm going to tell you that your salon — "
"What about my salon?"
"It came up."
The salon. The Middle Eastern Literature Salon. It had started in 1998 as an informal gathering — Samir, three graduate students, a pot of cardamom coffee, and a stack of translated poetry. Nizar Qabbani, Forugh Farrokhzad, Mahmoud Darwish. They met in Samir's living room on the first and third Thursdays of every month. By 2001 it had grown to eighteen regular attendees: undergraduates, graduate students, two faculty spouses, a retired librarian who had served in the Peace Corps in Jordan, and a growing contingent of students who were themselves from Middle Eastern families — Iranian, Lebanese, Syrian, Palestinian, Egyptian — children of immigrants who had grown up speaking Arabic or Farsi at home and English everywhere else, who had never before had a space where their two languages could coexist without explanation.
After September 11th, the salon had become something else.
It had happened organically. The Thursday after the attacks, eleven people showed up instead of the usual six. Nobody had planned it. Nobody had sent an email saying "let's gather to process our grief and fear." They had simply come, because it was Thursday and the salon was the only place in Midland, Indiana where a nineteen-year-old named Rami Haddad could say "I'm scared to walk to my biology lab" and not have someone tell him he was overreacting.
By 2005, the salon had twenty-four regular attendees. Samir had moved the meeting to the basement of the student union because his living room couldn't hold everyone. They read Rumi, they read Adunis, they read Said's "Reflections on Exile." They drank too-sweet tea and argued about translations and sometimes, when someone's mother called from Beirut or Tehran or Ramallah with news of a cousin who had been detained or a neighborhood that had been bombed, they stopped reading entirely and just sat together. "The provost mentioned it during the quarterly review. He said — and I'm quoting — 'We're getting questions about that Middle East club of Samir Khalil's.' I corrected him. I said it was a literature salon. He said, and I quote again, 'That's what they all say.'"
"They all."
"Yes."
"What does that mean, Esther? What does he think a literature salon is a front for?"
"I don't think he knows. I don't think he wants to know. I think he wants it to stop being his problem, and the easiest way for it to stop being his problem is for it to stop existing."
Samir sat back in the chair. Esther's office was small and overstuffed — bookshelves on every wall, stacks of blue books from the 1990s that she'd never gotten around to recycling, a poster of the Bayeux Tapestry that had been there so long it had faded from blue to gray. He had been in this office dozens of times. He had defended his tenure case in this office. He had celebrated his promotion to full professor with a bottle of prosecco that Esther had produced from a filing cabinet. This office was safe. This conversation was not.
"Let me ask you something," Samir said. "If I were running a Shakespeare salon, would the provost be 'getting questions' about it?"
Esther didn't answer. She didn't need to.
The fourth thing was the bank.
On October 17th, Samir received a letter from Midland Federal Savings & Loan. The letter was addressed to "Mr. Samir Kahlil" — two L's, a misspelling that had followed him his entire life — and it informed him that his mortgage was "undergoing a routine portfolio review." There was no problem, the letter stressed. No issue with his payment history. But the bank had "updated its risk assessment protocols" and needed to "verify certain documentation." Could he please provide his original naturalization certificate, his marriage license, three years of tax returns, and a letter from his employer confirming his "ongoing employment status"?
Samir had refinanced his mortgage in 2003. The bank had all of this information. He had been a customer of Midland Federal for twelve years. His checking account, savings account, and both children's college funds were held there. He had never missed a payment on anything. His credit score was 782. When he called the number on the letter, the loan officer — a man named Greg who sounded perhaps twenty-four years old — told him the review was "random" and apologized for "any inconvenience."
"Random," Samir said to Sarah that night. "Random portfolio review. Three months after the Patriot Act expanded financial surveillance authority. Totally random. Nothing to do with the fact that my last name is Khalil."
Sarah was folding laundry on the bed. She folded a t-shirt of Adam's — the one with the cartoon dinosaur that said "RAWR Means I Love You in Dinosaur" — and placed it carefully on the growing stack. "Are you going to send the documents?"
"What choice do I have?"
"You could fight it. Call the ACLU. Make a stink."
"And then what? Then I'm the angry Arab professor making trouble. Then the provost doesn't need to find a polite excuse. Then I'm a problem they can solve with paperwork."
Sarah unfolded the t-shirt and refolded it. "You're scared."
"Of course I'm scared. I'm scared that Layla will have no friends by Christmas. I'm scared that Adam will start getting called 'towel-head' on the playground and won't tell us because he doesn't want us to worry. I'm scared that one day I'll come home and you'll look at me differently — not because you've changed, but because the world has made it too expensive for you to stay the same."
Sarah stopped folding. She crossed the bedroom and put her arms around him from behind while he sat on the edge of the bed. They stayed like that for a long time.
"You know what the worst part is," Samir said. "None of this is provable. Every single thing has a reasonable explanation. Budget constraints. Random portfolio review. Student enrollment fluctuations. Parents exercising their right to ask questions. I can't point to any single thing and say 'there, that's racism.' It's a thousand paper cuts and each one is small enough to be an accident."
The fifth thing was the neighbor.
The McAllisters had lived next door for nine years. Tom McAllister was a civil engineer with the state highway department. His wife Diane ran a home daycare. Their dog, a golden retriever named Gus, had dug under the fence between their yards so many times that Samir and Tom had eventually just removed a section of fence and let Gus roam between both properties. Every winter Tom and Samir took turns shoveling each other's driveways. Every summer they traded vegetables from their respective gardens. In 1998, when Sarah miscarried at eleven weeks, Diane had shown up at their door with a lasagna and a six-pack of beer and said "I'm not leaving until you eat something."
In October of 2005, Tom started crossing the street.
Not every day. Not obviously. He still waved. He still smiled. But the driveway shoveling stopped. The vegetable trading stopped. And when Samir walked out to get his newspaper on the morning of October 24th, he saw Tom coming out of his front door at the same moment, and Tom paused — a hesitation so brief that anyone else might have missed it — and then bent down to retie a shoelace that was already tied, giving Samir just enough time to go back inside before an interaction could occur.
It was masterful, really. In twelve years of living in America, Samir had learned that Americans were poets of avoidance. They could not say "I don't want to associate with you" — that would be rude, and Americans hated rudeness almost as much as they hated ambiguity. Instead they developed elaborate choreographies of non-interaction: the strategic shoelace, the phone call that couldn't wait, the sudden recollection of an errand in the opposite direction. The result was the same as a slammed door, but delivered with such grace that you couldn't even be angry. You could only be sad.
The sixth thing was the suggestion.
It came in a memo. No subject line. From the Office of the Provost. Dated November 3, 2005.
"Dear Professor Khalil,
I write to follow up on our discussions regarding the informal gatherings currently conducted under your supervision in the Student Union basement. The university remains fully committed to academic freedom and the robust exchange of ideas. However, in light of community feedback and the current national security climate, we believe that the continuation of these gatherings in their present form may expose the university, its faculty, and its students to unnecessary scrutiny.
This is not a directive. The university does not and cannot prohibit faculty from exercising their rights of free association. We simply ask that you consider whether the benefits of these gatherings continue to outweigh the potential costs — to yourself, to your family, and to the institution that has been proud to call you a colleague these twelve years.
We appreciate your consideration of this matter.

Not a directive. A suggestion. A request to consider. The most dangerous words in the English language, Samir thought, were the ones that gave you a choice while making it clear which choice you were expected to make. "We simply ask that you consider." The velvet glove. The polite enzyme.
He read the memo six times. Each time he found something new to be horrified by. The phrase "community feedback" without specifying which community or what feedback. The phrase "institution that has been proud to call you a colleague" — past tense, proud to have called you, as though the pride had already ended. The phrase "unnecessary scrutiny" — as though the scrutiny itself were necessary and the only question was whether Samir deserved it.
He showed the memo to Sarah.
"So that's it," she said.
"That's what?"
"The veil. They're not pretending anymore. They're telling you to stop, but they're doing it in a way that lets them say they never told you to stop."
"They can't fire me. I have tenure."
"They don't need to fire you. They need to make staying harder than leaving. The bank. The neighbors. Layla's friends. The classes. They don't need to break you. They just need to make it hurt enough that you break yourself."
Samir looked at the memo again. "'The temperature at which welcome cools,'" he said.
"What?"
"That's what this is. Welcome isn't a state. It's a temperature. It can drop degree by degree. Nobody notices each degree. And then one day you look up and it's freezing and you can't remember when it got cold, because it was never cold — it was always just slightly colder than the day before."
The salon met on Thursday, November 17th. Twenty-two people came. Two fewer than last month — the Khan family had moved to Chicago, a quiet departure that no one discussed because everyone understood. Samir served the cardamom coffee himself, pouring it into small ceramic cups the way his grandmother had taught him in Beirut when he was seven years old, before the war, before the emigration, before everything.
When everyone had settled into the folding chairs and the floor cushions, Samir stood at the front of the room. He held the memo in his hand. He had not decided what he was going to say.
"Before we begin," he said, "I need to tell you something."
He looked at their faces. Rami Haddad, the biology student who was afraid to walk to lab. Fatima al-Rashid, who had lost her uncle in Fallujah in April and had not spoken for three consecutive salon meetings afterward — she had just come and sat and listened, because listening was all she could do. "I have received a communication from the university administration," Samir said. "It suggests — it does not order, it suggests — that this salon exposes us to 'unnecessary scrutiny.'"
A murmur moved through the room.
"The university believes," Samir continued, "that this gathering — where we read love poems written in Damascus in the ninth century and elegies written in Tehran in the twentieth — constitutes a national security concern."
"That's insane," Rami said.
"It is reasonable," Samir said. "That's the problem. It is reasonable to review, reasonable to question, reasonable to scrutinize, reasonable to suggest. Every step is reasonable. The destination is unreasonable, but you cannot point to any step along the way and say 'this is where it went wrong.' That is how you get from a literature salon to a national security concern in twelve reasonable steps."
"So what do we do?" Fatima asked. It was the first thing she had said at a salon meeting in seven months.
Samir looked at the memo one more time. Then he folded it carefully, placed it on the table beside the coffee pot, and said, "We read tonight's poem. Nizar Qabbani, 'A Lesson in Drawing.' Miriam, would you begin?"
And Miriam, seventy-four years old with arthritis in both hands and three grandchildren in Cleveland, opened her dog-eared copy of Qabbani's collected works and began to read, in her careful Midwestern-accented Arabic: "My son places his paint box in front of me / and asks me to draw a bird for him..."
The salon continued. It continued through November and December and into the new year. The drain continued too — enrollment in Samir's courses fell to single digits, the bank's "routine review" stretched into its fourth month, and in January Tom McAllister put his house on the market without saying goodbye. But the salon continued, because stopping would have meant admitting that the enzymes had won, that the temperature had finally frozen, that the beautiful lie of welcome had been replaced by the devastating truth of exclusion — and Samir Khalil had decided, somewhere between the memo and the Qabbani poem, that he would rather freeze standing up than warm himself with surrender.
One night in February, after a salon meeting where only nine people had come — the fewest ever — Samir sat alone in the empty basement, stacking chairs. Rami had stayed to help. They worked in silence for a while, the metal legs of the chairs clicking against each other.
"Professor Khalil," Rami said, "do you ever regret it?"
"Regret what?"
"Not stopping. Not making it easier."
Samir thought about Layla's empty birthday party. About the bank letter. About Tom's shoelace. About the provost's memo. About all the degrees on the thermometer that no one could name but everyone could feel.
"No," he said. "If I had stopped, I would have spent the rest of my life wondering whether the cold was real or whether I had imagined it. Now I know it's real. Knowing is better. Even when knowing hurts."
Rami nodded. He was nineteen. He was afraid to walk to his biology lab. But he was here, stacking chairs in a basement at ten o'clock on a Thursday night, and that counted for something. That counted for everything.
"Same time next week?" Rami asked.
"Same time next week," Samir said.
