She had been wiping the same glass for eleven minutes when the police came. The cloth was a piece of old flannel that Frank had torn from one of his work shirts the year the dockers went on strike for the last time and nobody bought shirts anymore. The glass was one of the twelve surviving pint glasses from the set of twenty-four they had ordered in 1969, the year they took over the pub, the year Rose was thirty-eight and still had red in her hair and Frank could lift a full keg by himself and the East End was still the East End, before the docks died and the yuppies came sniffing round the Isle of Dogs. Two of them, a man and a woman, the woman doing the talking while the man looked at the floor as if the linoleum might contain clues. PC Janine Harper, she said her name was, and she had a notebook with a spiral binding and a biro that kept running out of ink. The four of them looked at each other, and then at Rose, and then at the objects on the bar. The coat. The cap. The cigarettes. The wallet. The photograph. Frank Mallory, aged twenty-four, in a suit that did not quite fit, standing beside Rose with her red hair and her white dress and the pub behind them, the sign above the door reading THE SHIPWRIGHT'S ARMS in letters that had since been repainted four times. Somewhere to the east, the cranes of Canary Wharf rose against the night sky, building a city that would not remember the Shipwright's Arms or the people who drank there or the man who had held them together like mortar holds brick, invisible and essential and gone.
