The Stovepipe Job
The office smelled like cheap tobacco and cheaper decisions. Jack Callahan sat behind a desk that had once belonged to someone who made more than twenty dollars a week, smoking a cigarette that had once belonged to someone who made less.
The door opened without knocking. The man who walked in wore a black soft hat pulled low over his eyes and a coat that cost more than Jack's entire business. He didn't sit. He stood in the doorway the way a shadow stands—present but not quite there.
"Mr. Callahan?" he said. His voice was flat, like a man reading from a script he didn't believe in.
"That's what the sign says."
"I represent the Guardian Spirit Association. We help families protect what matters most."
Jack exhaled smoke toward the ceiling. "Everybody in New York helps families protect what matters most. That's why half the city lives in tenements."
The man didn't smile. He never would. "Your murals, Mr. Callahan. The fireplace guardians you paint. They have... quality. Most artists paint for money. You paint because you believe in what you're painting. That makes you valuable."
Jack set his cigarette down. "Valuable how?"

The first family was on Mulberry Street. A mother and two children in a single room that smelled of boiled cabbage and damp wool. The mother's name was Rose. Different name, same method. They target vulnerable people—widows, single mothers, people who just lost someone—and they convince them that their money can buy divine protection."
Jack's hand stopped halfway to his glass. "And?"
"And we can't touch them. The ringleader—known as the Hat—never handles the money himself. He gives instructions to lieutenants, who give instructions to canvassers like you. By the time the cash hits the river, it's clean. Always has been."
Jack set his glass down. The whiskey hadn't touched his lips. "What do you want from me?"
"Nothing. I'm just telling you because I figure you're one of the suckers, not one of the suckers doing the sucking. The Hat's good. Real good. He's been doing this for fifteen years. Every city, every wave of fear or grief or hope—he shows up with a new name and the same old script."
Jack paid for his drink and left. He walked home in the rain, which had started sometime between the bar and the street where he lived, and he didn't notice until his shoes were full and his pants were heavy.

The apartment was cold. The landlord had stopped stoking the basement furnace three weeks ago, and Jack hadn't had the heart to ask him to start again. He sat in his room with his coat on, staring at the wall, thinking about Margaret's eyes.
He went downstairs and found the janitor in the basement, sitting in front of the furnace with a tin cup of coffee in one hand and a newspaper in the other. Old Pete. He'd been janitor at the building since before Jack moved in, which meant since before the war, which meant he was probably sixty-five if he was a day.
"Evening, Pete."
"Evening, Jack."
Jack sat on the stairs. The furnace ticked and groaned, the sound of metal cooling in a cold room. "Pete, you ever meet someone who claimed to be a messenger from some kind of divine organization? Guy in a black hat. Talks about guardian spirits and fuel and rivers."
Pete turned a page of his newspaper. "Sounds like a con man."
"Yeah. I figured that out."
"Too late?"
Jack was quiet for a long time. The furnace ticked. Somewhere above them, a pipe clanked.
"About as late as it gets," he said finally.
Pete set down his newspaper and looked at Jack with eyes that were small and dark and entirely without sentiment. "I've been in this building forty years. Forty. Seen preachers who promised healing, prophets who promised the end of the world, men in hats who promised guardian spirits. You know what they all have in common?"
Jack shook his head.
"They never stoked a furnace in their lives."
The words hung in the cold air between them, simple and unadorned and absolutely true. Jack felt something shift inside his chest—not dramatically, not like a door swinging open, but like a lock clicking into place.

He didn't go looking for the Hat. He knew that was pointless. The man would have a new name in Brooklyn, a new organization in Philadelphia, a new river in Boston. He was a creature of the American landscape, like a weed that grew in cracked pavement and dried earth and flooded soil with equal indifference.

He took out his brushes and his paints. He set up his easel in the corner of his room and painted for four hours without stopping. When he finished, he had a picture of an old man sitting in front of a furnace, a tin cup in his hand, his face illuminated by the orange glow of burning coal. The old man's eyes were looking at something beyond the canvas, something Jack couldn't see but could feel—a kind of patient attention, the attention of a man who has sat in front of fires for forty years and learned that the fire doesn't need anything from you. It just burns.

Jack didn't know about the article. He knew only that the painting was on the door, and that people were looking at it, and that for the first time in a long time, he felt like the things he painted were actually his own.
