The Man They Called a Hero
March 14, 1975. The fire was on the fourth floor of a six-story building in Brooklyn. It started in the kitchen of apartment 4B—old wiring, someone left a toaster plugged in, the usual story. By the time Engine 297 arrived, flames were coming out of the windows and the stairwell was full of smoke thick enough to chew.
Inside, there were screams. A woman. A child.
Eddie Sullivan went in.
I was standing by the pumper, watching. I had been watching Eddie go into fires for eleven years. I knew the way he moved—efficient, no wasted motion, like a man who had done this so many times that his body knew what to do before his brain caught up. He had his SCBA on, his helmet, his axe over his shoulder. He looked like a soldier. He was a soldier, just not the kind they recruit.
"Go in," the captain said. "Two crews. Search and rescue."
Eddie didn't answer. He never did. He just went in.
The door closed behind him and the building groaned. I could hear the fire through the walls—a deep, hungry sound, like something alive eating its way through the floorboards.
Five minutes passed. Then ten. Then fifteen.
The captain was on the radio. "Any word from inside?"
Silence.
Then a shout. Eddie's voice, muffled by smoke and distance. "Got 'em! Fourth floor, two victims!"

"The stairs are still open. There might be more."
And he went back in.
That was the last time anyone saw Eddie Sullivan alive.
The roof collapsed at 3:42 PM. Eddie was inside.
We pulled him out at 6:15 PM. He was burned over more than eighty percent of his body. His face was unrecognizable. His hands—his hands were still curled around the axe.
He was thirty-five years old. He was married. He had two children—a boy, twelve, and a girl, nine.

The funeral was on the twentieth of March. It rained. Of course it rained. Everything about that week was soaked—soaked in rain, soaked in grief, soaked in the kind of public sorrow that fills a cathedral and then spills out into the street.
The mayor was there. The police commissioner. The fire commissioner. All of them in black suits, all of them standing in a row behind Eddie's casket, which was open, and God help me, they had done their best, but Eddie's face was still not something you could look at for more than a few seconds.
I stood in the back. I always stood in the back. I'm not a funeral person. I don't know how to do these things. You put on your uniform, you stand at attention, you nod at the widow, and you go home and sit in your kitchen and drink a beer and try not to think about the fact that the man in that box was alive last Tuesday and now he isn't.
The mayor spoke. "Eddie Sullivan was a hero. He gave his life to save others. He embodied the highest ideals of this city."
I wanted to say: you don't know him. You don't know that he drank cheap beer and listened to old jazz records and cried when his daughter was born. You don't know that he was afraid of heights even though he climbed ladders for a living. You don't know anything about him. You just came to take a picture.
But I didn't say it. I stood in the back. I nodded. I went home.

Eddie's name was put on the FDNY Hero's Memorial. Third row, third from the left. I went to see it once, in April. The memorial was on a corner in Manhattan, a big stone wall with names engraved in bronze. Eddie's name caught the sunlight. It looked good. It looked like it belonged there.
Maria Gonzalez came every year on the fourteenth of March. She brought flowers—white lilies, Eddie's favorite, she said, though I don't think Eddie had ever told her that. He had never told her anything, really. They had met for five minutes in a burning building, and she had seen him carry her son out of the fire, and that was enough for her to remember him for the rest of her life.
I wondered if that was fair to Eddie. To be remembered only as the man who carried a child out of a fire. To be reduced to five minutes.
But then I looked at my own life—twelve years on the force, forty-seven years old, divorced, no kids, a apartment that was too quiet—and I wondered who I was to think about what was fair.

In 1980, I heard that Eddie's son had been arrested. Sixteen years old, Danny Sullivan, possession of a knife, assault in the second degree. It happened in the Bronx, outside a bodega, over a girl or a debt or something that small and stupid and human.
I went to the detention center. I sat across from Danny in a room with grey walls and a metal table and a fluorescent light that buzzed like a fly. He looked like Eddie. Not exactly—Eddie had been broader, darker, more solid. Danny was thinner, lighter, with his father's eyes but his mother's mouth.
"Your father," I began.
"He's dead."
"I know."
"Then why are you here?"
I thought about it. I thought about the fact that I had attended his funeral, and stood in the back, and nodded at the mayor, and gone home and drunk a beer. I thought about the fact that I had visited Eddie's memorial once and seen his name on the wall and walked away. I thought about the fact that I had not thought about Eddie Sullivan for three years—not really, not until I heard his son had been arrested.
"Because he was my friend," I said.
Danny looked at me for a long time. Then he looked down at the table and put his hands flat on the metal and pressed until his knuckles turned white.
"I miss him," he said. His voice was flat. He was not crying. He was not angry. He was just saying it, like he was telling me the time.
"I know," I said.
I stayed for twenty minutes. I didn't tell him anything. I didn't give him advice. I didn't tell him to be better or to do better or to remember who his father was. I just sat there, in a room with grey walls and a buzzing light, and I sat with a sixteen-year-old boy who missed his father.
Then I left. I didn't give my name.

In 1985, the city built a parking garage on the corner where the memorial stood. The third row came down. Eddie's name was chiseled out of the bronze. I read about it in the paper. One sentence, next to an advertisement for a new shopping center.
"FDNY Memorial Expanded to Accommodate Growing Number of Heroes."
I was in a bar in Brooklyn when I read it. A young guy at the next table was talking to his friend. "You hear about that new parking garage on Manhattan Square? They tore down the old FDNY thing to build it."
"The what?"
"The FDNY hero wall. They said it was taking up too much space."
The friend laughed. "Who cares? That's ancient history."
I finished my beer. I paid the tab. I walked out into the street. The wind was cold. I pulled my coat tight and kept walking.
I passed a mirror in a shop window. I looked at myself—a middle-aged man in a dark coat, walking alone down a Brooklyn street at dusk. I looked at my face and I saw that it was not unrecognizable, but it was not Eddie's either. It was just my face. Just Tommy's face.
I kept walking.
