The feast is loud. It is a wall of sound. You sit in the shadow of the high table. The candlelight trembles on the stone walls. It dances like a trapped bird. The air is thick. It smells of roasted meat and old sweat. It smells of fear. You are the King’s Hand. You are the architect of his will. You have built this cage of stone and law. It is beautiful. It is cold.

You watch the dancers. They move in circles. They are young. They do not know what comes next. They do not know about the blackened iron gates in the north. They do not know about the silence in the archives. You know. You have always known. You are the wise one. You are the one who sees the cracks in the foundation. You have served for forty years. You have never spoken a lie. Or so you tell yourself. You have only spoken the necessary truths. The truths that keep the realm alive. The truths that keep you alive.

A servant approaches. He holds a goblet. His hands shake. He is young. He looks at you with wide eyes. He sees the title. He sees the power. He does not see the weight. You take the cup. The wine is dark. It is thick. You do not drink. You set it down. The sound is sharp in the quiet corner. The music swells. It drowns the clink of glass.

You rise. Your knees ache. The stone floor is cold through your boots. You walk toward the high table. The noise follows you. It is a physical thing. It presses against your chest. The King sits at the head. He is old now. His hair is white. His eyes are sharp. He is your mirror. He is your master. He is your father in all but name. You love him. It is an obsessive, burning thing. You have shaped yourself around him. You have cut away everything that did not fit his vision. You are hollow. You are strong.

You stop before him. The room goes silent. The silence is heavy. It has teeth. The King looks up. His gaze is cold. It is familiar. You have felt it a thousand times. It is the gaze of a judge. It is the gaze of a lover. It is the same thing. You bow. Your back bends. Your head touches the air near his knee. You remain there. You count your breaths. One. Two. Three.

"Rise," he says.

His voice is low. It is rough. Like stone on stone. You rise. You stand straight. You do not look at the crowd. You look at him. You wait. This is the moment. The recognition. The truth is not a secret. It is a weapon. And he knows how to wield it. You have given it to him. You have polished it and placed it in his hand. Now he holds it.

"You have built well," he says.

It is not a question. It is an accusation. You nod. "It stands," you say. Your voice is steady. It is dry. "It will hold."

"Will it?" He leans forward. The candlelight catches his face. Shadows deepen in the hollows of his cheeks. "Or is it a tomb?"

You do not answer. You do not need to. He knows. You both know. The architecture is sound. The logic is perfect. The people are content. But it is a tomb. You have sealed them in. You have sealed yourself in. The freedom they have is a lie. The freedom you have is a lie. You have chosen order. You have chosen control. You have chosen safety. And the price is their souls. And yours.

"Leave," he says.

The word is soft. It cuts deep. You turn. Your steps are measured. You do not run. You do not look back. You walk through the hall. The noise returns. It is a roar. It is a beast. You pass the dancers. They laugh. They are unaware. They are the sheep. And you are the shepherd. And the shepherd is tired.

You exit into the corridor. The stone is cold here. The air is still. There is no music. There is no smell of meat. There is only the smell of dust. And rot. The rot of old wood. The rot of old ideas. You walk. Your boots echo. The sound is lonely. It is the sound of a single heart beating in an empty room.

You reach the door to the library. It is heavy oak. It is iron-banded. You pull it open. The hinges groan. It is a sound of age. It is a sound of sorrow. The room is dark. You light a single candle. The flame is small. It is fragile. It is all that is left of you.

You sit at the desk. The leather chair creaks. You place your hands on the wood. The grain is rough. It is real. You look at the books. They are lined up. They are neat. They are orderly. They are dead. You open one. The pages are brittle. The words are ink. They are fixed. They cannot be changed. They cannot be saved.

You think of your mother. She is dead. She died in this room. She was ill. The doctors came. They spoke of herbs. They spoke of prayers. You spoke of order. You spoke of control. You told her to rest. You told her to be still. You kept the room quiet. You kept the room clean. You kept the room safe. And she died. Alone. In the quiet. You did not hold her hand. You did not speak to her. You kept the rules. You kept the peace. And the peace killed her.

You close the book. The cover is hard. It hurts your hand. You press it against your chest. The pain is real. It is a reminder. You are not wise. You are not strong. You are a coward. You hid behind the rules. You hid behind the law. You hid behind the throne. And in hiding, you lost everything.

The door opens. The sound is loud. It is a shock. You do not turn. You know who it is. It is the King. He does not enter. He stands in the doorway. The candlelight does not reach him. He is a shadow. He is a void.

"You have made your choice," he says.

His voice is distant. It is far away. It is the voice of the wind. It is the voice of the stone. You do not answer. You cannot. The words are stuck in your throat. They are stones. They are heavy. You swallow. The pain is sharp.

"I do not wish to kill you," he says.

The words are gentle. They are cruel. They are the cruelest thing he has ever said. To spare you is to torture you. To let you live is to let you rot. You are part of the machine. You are the gear. Without you, the machine breaks. With you, the machine grinds. And the grinding is the sound of the realm.

"Leave the kingdom," he says.

It is a command. It is a mercy. It is a curse. You stand. Your legs are weak. They do not obey you. You lean on the desk. The wood is cold. It is solid. It is the only thing that is real.

"I will not go," you say.

The voice is yours. It is small. It is weak. But it is yours. It is the first true word you have spoken in years. The first word that is not a rule. The first word that is not a command. It is a plea. It is a surrender.

The King steps forward. He enters the light. His face is clear. It is pale. It is tired. It is yours. He looks at you. He sees you. He sees the man you were. The boy who wanted to save the world. The boy who wanted to be good. He sees the lie. He sees the cost.

"You are free," he says.

The words hang in the air. They are light. They are heavy. They are a blade. You are free. You can go. You can leave. You can escape the tomb. You can escape the cage. You can be nothing. You can be no one. You can be alive.

You look at the door. It is open. The corridor is dark. The path is clear. You look at the King. He is waiting. He is not moving. He is not forcing you. He is letting you choose. He is letting you pay the price.

You pick up the book. It is small. It is old. It is a record. It is a truth. You hold it in your hands. It is warm. It is alive. You open it. The pages are blank. They are white. They are waiting.

You take the quill. Your hand shakes. The ink is black. It is deep. You write. You write your name. You write the date. You write the end. You do not write a confession. You do not write a plea. You write a release. You write a goodbye.

You close the book. You set it on the desk. You turn to the King. You do not bow. You do not speak. You walk to the door. You stop. You look back. He is still there. He is a shadow. He is a mirror.

You step out. The corridor is cold. The air is still. You walk. You do not look back. You do not think. You do not feel. You are empty. You are full. You are free.

The doors open. The night is dark. The stars are out. They are cold. They are distant. They are watching. You walk into the dark. The dark is wide. The dark is deep. The dark is yours.

You walk. The ground is hard. The air is cold. The silence is loud. It is the loudest thing in the world. It is the only thing that is true. You walk. You do not stop. You do not turn. You are gone. You are free. The price is paid. The cost is high. The soul is broken. The body remains.

You walk into the night. The night takes you. The night holds you. The night is free. You are free. The freedom is cold. The freedom is empty. The freedom is yours. You walk. You walk. You walk.
