The rain in New York doesn't wash anything clean. It just makes the grime slicker, turns the sidewalks into mirrors that reflect the neon signs back at you until you can't tell which way is up. I was sitting in my office on West 47th Street, watching the rain streak the window and blur the headlights of the cabs that still ran at midnight, and I was trying to decide whether to pour another drink or just go home and sleep off the one I'd already had. The problem with sleeping, when you're a man who spent four years in the Pacific watching his friends get turned into red mist, is that sleep doesn't bring peace. It brings memories.

The man who walked in at 11:47 PM was wet, which in New York means he was either desperate or lying. In my experience, it's usually both. He wore a coat that had been expensive once and a hat that had been stylish once, and both were now the same dull gray color that everything in New York becomes if you leave it outside long enough. He sat down without being invited, which is either courage or stupidity. Usually it's both.

"I need your help, Mr. Morane," he said. His accent was hard to place—Eastern European, maybe, but not quite. The kind of accent you get when you've lived in three countries and none of them let you keep your name.

"I don't help people I just met," I said. "Especially not ones who walk into my office at midnight looking like they've been dragged through a hedge backwards."

He smiled. It was a thin smile, the kind that doesn't reach the eyes. "I have something that might interest you. A document. From 1943. Immigration file. Number 847-B."

I stopped reaching for the bottle. Immigration files from 1943 were nobody's business unless you were the government or the people whose business it was supposed to be. And even then, after the war, after everything that had been uncovered and buried and uncovered again, immigration files were the kind of thing that made men disappear.

"Where did you get this?" I asked.

"My brother," he said. "His name was Dmitri. He came here in 1943 on a work visa. The government said he was a security risk. They put him in Ellis Island's detention center. He's been there for five years, Mr. Morane. Five years, for a man who wanted to make shoes."

I had heard of Ellis Island's detention center. Nobody who went there came out. Not the way they had gone in.

"Why come to me?" I asked. "You want someone to investigate the government, you go to a lawyer. You want someone to make a scene, you go to the press. You come to a private detective, you're either very naive or very desperate."

"Both," he said simply. "And because I know who you are. You were a journalist before you were a detective. You wrote for the Herald. You wrote about the war. You wrote about what you saw."

I had. I had written about what I saw in the Pacific, and I had written about what I saw when I came back, and neither had made me popular. The first had made me depressed. The second had made me dangerous.

"What do you want me to do?" I asked.

"Look at the file," he said. "Tell me if it's real."

He slid a manila envelope across my desk. It was thin, which meant it contained either nothing or everything. I opened it and took out a single sheet of paper, folded and refolded until the creases had turned white. It was an immigration document, stamped and signed and sealed with the authority of a government that believed in paper the way other governments believed in guns.

I read it. Then I read it again. Then I held it up to the light and examined the stamp.

"The seal is right," I said. "The signatures look authentic. The paper is the correct stock. But the ink on the third signature is wrong."

He leaned forward. "Wrong how?"

"The ink is too dark. The other two signatures have faded slightly—the kind of fading that happens over five years. This one hasn't faded at all. Which means it was added later. After the document was originally created."

His face went very still. "You mean it's been altered?"

"I mean someone looked at a real document and decided to make it more real." I folded the paper and handed it back. "Your brother's file is real. But the reason he was detained—the reason they gave, at least—was added later. Someone decided that five years of detention wasn't punishment enough, so they gave him a reason that sounded worse."

The man stared at me for a long moment. Then he stood up, put the envelope in his coat, and said, "Thank you, Mr. Morane. I don't know how to repay you."

"You don't," I said. "That's how this works. You don't get repaid. You just get smarter about what you're walking into."

He left. I poured the drink. I drank it. I poured another.

The next morning, I went to the immigration office on Foley Square. The clerk who served me was a man named O'Malley, which was either a good sign or a bad sign depending on whether O'Malley was corrupt. In New York, the line between the two is thinner than most people want to admit.

I told him I was researching family history. It wasn't a lie, exactly. My family history was the reason I was sitting in a office on West 47th Street instead of a bar in Greenwich Village, and that counted for something.

"File 847-B?" O'Malley said. He looked at me over the top of his glasses. "That's a sealed file, Mr. Morane. You need a court order."

"I'm not trying to read the file," I said. "I just want to know if it exists."

He stared at me for a moment. Then he turned to his desk and opened a drawer. He took out a card index and ran his finger down the cards until he found what he was looking for. He closed the drawer.

"It exists," he said. "But it doesn't exist anymore. The file was transferred six months ago. To a different office."

"Which office?"

He shook his head. "I can't tell you that, Mr. Morane. Sealed file."

"I'm not asking you to break the law. I'm asking you to tell me if you're going to break the law to keep the information."

He smiled. It was the same kind of smile the man had worn last night. Thin, but this one reached the eyes. "The file was transferred to the Department of Internal Security. Building on 38th Street. You can go ask them yourself."

I thanked him and left. On 38th Street, the Department of Internal Security occupied the top three floors of a building that looked like every other government building in New York—gray stone, narrow windows, a sign above the door that said what the building was without saying what it did.

The woman at the desk told me that file 847-B didn't exist in their records. I showed her the document. She looked at it for a long moment, then looked at me, then looked back at the document.

"This is a beautiful forgery," she said. "Who made it?"

"Does it matter?"

"It matters because if this is a forgery, then someone is trying to create a record that doesn't exist. And if someone is trying to create a record that doesn't exist, it means there's a real record that someone doesn't want people to find."

I felt the room get slightly colder. "What are you saying?"

"I'm saying that file 847-B probably does exist. But it exists in a place that doesn't have a card index. And the person who keeps that place is a man named Callahan."

"Callahan?"

"Detective Frank Callahan. NYPD. He's been with Internal Security for twelve years. Before that, he was on the payroll of the Five Families. Before that, he was a cop. The line between those three things is very thin in New York."

I thanked her and left. I didn't go back to my office. I went to Elena's bar in Harlem.

Elena Vasquez had come to New York from Buenos Aires seven years ago, speaking English that was good but still carried the music of Spanish underneath it like a river running under a city. She ran a bar in Harlem that was technically legal but practically invisible, the kind of place where people came to drink without being seen, and where I came when I needed to remember that the world still contained beauty even if I couldn't keep it.

She poured me a whiskey without asking. I told her everything—the man, the document, O'Malley, the woman on 38th Street, Callahan.

She listened without interrupting. When I finished, she said, "You're going to look for Callahan."

"I have to."

"He's dangerous."

"I know."

"Your leg still bothers you when it rains."

"I'll be careful," I said.

"You always say that."

Callahan lived in a brownstone in Bed-Stuy that looked like it had been painted once and never maintained. I found him on a Tuesday, sitting on his front steps with a bottle of beer and a newspaper he wasn't reading. He was a big man, fifty years old, with a face that had been handsome once and had since been rearranged by too many fights into something that suggested he had lost more than he had won.

"Jack Morane," he said. "I was wondering when you'd show up."

"I don't know what you're talking about."

He smiled. It was not a friendly smile. "You looked at a document. A document that someone very important doesn't want looked at. And now you're asking questions. Questions that have answers, Jack. But the answers cost money. And you, my friend, are very poor."

"Who do I work for?" I asked.

He took a sip of beer. "You don't work for anyone. That's the problem. You're a free agent, which in New York means you're nobody's protection and everybody's target."

"What do you want?"

"Nothing from you. I want you to go home, pour a drink, and forget that you ever saw that document. The man who gave it to you—he's already gone. He left the city last night. He's probably in Jersey by now, or maybe further. He made a mistake coming to you. He should have gone to a lawyer."

"Why?"

"Because lawyers have ethics. Detectives have prices. And in New York, prices are easier to understand than ethics."

I stood up. My leg was throbbing—the rain had been falling all morning, and the old wound in my left knee was reminding me why I had stopped running four years ago.

"Tell me one thing," I said. "Was your name on that document?"

Callahan's smile didn't change. But something behind his eyes did. Something shifted, like a door closing in a room I couldn't see.

"You should go home, Jack," he said.

I went home. I drank. I slept for three hours and woke up sweating.

The bar burned on a Friday night.

A trail that would lead someone like me—someone curious, someone poor, someone with nothing left to lose—into a room where the people who controlled that trail could decide what to do with me.

They had decided to burn a bar. They would decide next what to do with a detective.

I picked up my gun. It was a .38 Special, old but reliable, the kind of gun that had been standard issue for NYPD in 1943 and had been passed from one tired detective to another ever since. I checked the cylinder. Five rounds. Enough for most situations. Not enough for this one.

I put the gun in my coat pocket. I put the document in my inside pocket. I walked out into the rain.

New York at 3 AM is a different city from the one that exists at any other time. The streets are empty except for the occasional cab and the occasional man who, like me, has nowhere else to be. The neon signs flicker and buzz. The rain makes everything slick and reflective, turning the sidewalks into mirrors that show you a version of the city that is slightly distorted, slightly wrong, like a photograph that has been developed in the wrong chemicals.

I walked for two hours before I stopped. I ended up on the Brooklyn Bridge, standing in the middle of the pedestrian walkway, looking at the skyline across the river. The buildings were dark except for a few scattered windows, and the river below was black and moving, carrying everything downstream whether it wanted to go or not.

I thought about the man with the document. I thought about Elena. I thought about Callahan's smile. I thought about the ink on the third signature, too dark, too fresh, a stamp that had been added later to make a real document more real.

And I thought about what Dr. Sullivan, a neuroscientist I had consulted once about a case involving false memories, had told me: Memory is not a recording. It is a reconstruction. Every time you remember something, you are not retrieving a file. You are rebuilding it, and in the rebuilding, you are changing it.

The document had been changed. So had I.

I walked back to my office. I sat at my desk. I wrote down everything I knew, everything I had seen, everything I had inferred. I wrote it in a notebook that I kept for this purpose, a notebook that I knew I would probably never read again but that I felt compelled to write anyway, because writing is the one thing that a man can do to prove to himself that he existed, that he saw, that he understood, even if understanding doesn't save you.

When I finished, I put the notebook in my desk drawer, next to the gun. I poured a drink. I drank it. I poured another.

The rain continued. It always does in New York.
