The letter arrived three weeks after I disappeared, though it would never reach its destination. I found it now, tucked inside the binding of an old copy of Milton that Mrs. Halloway keeps on her mantelpiece, as if the house itself had been waiting to exhale this secret.
My name was Arthur Pendelton, and I was twenty-two years old when I came to Wetherby Vale.
It began, as these things often do, with something that fell from someone else's pocket. I was in the village of Blackthorn, a stopping-off point on my way to Yorkshire, in a tavern called The Crow's Perch. The place was thick with smoke and the murmur of men who had nothing better to discuss than the weather and the price of wool. I was not there for any of that. I had come with a letter of introduction from my editor at The London Chronicle, tasked with investigating a series of disappearances along the northern dales—seven souls in ten years, all strangers, all last seen within twenty miles of Blackthorn.
A man sat across from me, or rather, he had been sitting across from me. He was gone now, slipped out through the back door in a manner so quiet I barely noticed. But something had fallen in his absence. I looked down and found a folded piece of paper, roughly the size of a playing card, resting in the dirt between my boots.
It was a map. Hand-drawn, the ink faded to the colour of weak tea, it showed a valley I did not recognise, marked with symbols I could not immediately decipher. A red cross here, a series of concentric circles there, and along the eastern ridge, what appeared to be rows of small, evenly spaced dots. Something worth mapping, at least. Something worth finding.
I slipped it into my waistcoat pocket and finished my ale.
The journey to Wetherby Vale took two days. I travelled by coach as far as Hawes, then on foot along paths that grew narrower and more overgrown with each mile. The Yorkshire moors in November are a bleak and unforgiving place—grey sky pressed against grey earth, wind that carries the smell of wet peat and something else, something sweet and cloying that I could not name. The map led me off the recognised tracks and into a valley that did not appear on any Ordnance Survey sheet I had consulted.

It was only when I turned to leave that I noticed the footpath was no longer where I had left it. Or rather, it was there, but someone had placed a fresh stack of stones across it—a crude barrier, easily moved, but deliberate nonetheless. A warning.
I moved the stones and continued my ascent. When I reached the ridge, I looked back and saw, for the first time, the small cluster of buildings that marked the entrance to Wetherby Vale. A handful of cottages, a church with a crooked spire, and what appeared to be an inn—larger than the rest, with a sign that read Halloway's Rest.
I descended with a growing sense of unease that I attributed to nothing more significant than the cold and the isolation.
Mrs. Halloway received me in a kitchen that smelled of boiled cabbage and woodsmoke. She was a small woman with sharp features and eyes that missed nothing. Her hands were gnarled with age but moved with precise efficiency as she set before me a plate of bread, cheese, and what she called "a bit of meat."
"You're a long way from London, sir," she said, not looking up from the fire she was tending.
"I'm not from London, ma'am. Manchester. And I'm here on business."
She nodded, as if this explained everything. It did not.
That night, in the room they gave me—small, cold, with a mattress that smelled of damp—I lay awake and listened to the wind. It moved through the valley like a living thing, whispering through the rows of those strange plants, carrying with it that sweet, cloying scent. I thought of the seven missing persons. I thought of the man who had dropped the map. And I thought, with the reckless confidence of youth, that I was close to something important.
I was close. But not in the way I imagined.
The days that followed blurred into a pattern of discovery and dread. I visited the valley each morning, documenting the plants with increasing urgency. They were poppies—opium poppies, I was certain of it, though unlike any variety I had seen in cultivation. The alkaloid content, if my rough chemical tests were any indication, would be extraordinary. And they were being grown on an industrial scale, in a valley that, by all accounts, should have been barren and uninhabited.
But it was not the plants that troubled me most. It was the silence of the valley's inhabitants.
The villagers of Wetherby Vale were polite but distant. They greeted me in the street with nods and brief murmurs but never invited me into their homes. When I asked about the plants, conversation stopped abruptly. A shopkeeper would turn his back. A farmer would pretend not to understand my accent. The constable, a broad-shouldered man named Constable Graves, told me with a smile that did not reach his eyes that the valley was private land and that I should not be wandering about without permission.
"The land belongs to the valley," he said. "And the valley belongs to those who tend it."
It was not a threat, exactly. It was something worse—a statement of fact, delivered with the calm certainty of a man who has said the same thing many times and has never been contradicted.
The churchman, Reverend Ashworth, was more overtly hostile. He found me one afternoon sketching the plants near the eastern boundary and told me, in a voice that was soft but carried the weight of absolute authority, that I was "playing with forces I do not understand." He quoted Scripture at me—words about sowing and reaping, about the fruits of wickedness. I told him I was a man of science. He told me that God was a scientist too, and that He had placed certain things beyond human reach.
That night, I returned to Halloway's Rest to find my room had been searched.
It was a small violation, but it terrified me more than any threat. My satchel was untouched, but the desk drawer was open, and my notebook—the one containing my sketches, my notes, my map—was no longer inside it. I searched the room frantically, but it was gone. I mentioned this to Mrs. Halloway, and for the first time, I saw fear in her eyes.
"I don't know what you're talking about, sir," she said, but her hands were shaking as she set the tea on the table.
"I know you heard me," I said quietly.
She said nothing. She simply poured the tea and stood there, looking at me with an expression I could not read—pity, perhaps, or resignation.
I left Wetherby Vale three days later. I had decided that I was in over my head, that the seven missing persons were a warning, and that I did not wish to become the eighth. I packed my belongings in silence, paid my bill, and walked to the coach station at Blackthorn without looking back.
I made it as far as the ridge before they caught me.
I do not know who sent them. Perhaps Constable Graves. Perhaps Reverend Ashworth. Perhaps Mrs. Halloway, whose silence had been the loudest thing in the valley. It did not matter. Three men emerged from the mist, their faces obscured by scarves, and one of them struck me from behind with the butt of a rifle.
The last thing I saw before the darkness took me was the valley below—the rows of those terrible, beautiful plants, swaying gently in the wind, their blood-red flowers nodding like heads in assent.
The letter on Mrs. Halloway's mantelpiece was never written. It exists only in the fragments I managed to scrawl on the back of a tavern receipt before the men took me. I do not know where I am. I do not know if anyone will ever find this. I only know that the valley keeps its secrets well, and that the fog that moves through it at dusk is not fog at all, but the breath of seven souls who came before me, searching, always searching, for a story that the world was never meant to hear.
