The dust had been coming for three weeks. It arrived on the western horizon like a wall — a brown wall, thirty thousand feet high, swallowing the sky, swallowing the sun, swallowing the wheat that had stood golden in the fields until the wind tore it down.

Professor Thomas Calloway stood at the blackboard in the one-room schoolhouse and watched the dust seep through the cracks in the walls like a slow tide. He wrapped a damp cloth around his face and began to draw the solar system.

"Today," he said, his voice muffled by the cloth, "we are not studying wheat prices or soil erosion or the price of bank notes. Today we are studying the stars."

Five children sat on benches salvaged from a demolished church. They were wheat farmers' children, ages nine to fourteen, wearing clothes that had been patched so many times the patches had patches. Their faces were pale from weeks of living indoors, behind dust-proofed windows, with damp cloths pressed to their mouths. But their eyes were bright. They had not seen the sun in twenty-one days. The stars, they knew, were still there, above the dust.

Professor Calloway finished drawing the solar system. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn — six planets orbiting a yellow sun he had drawn with chalk dust mixed with the dust that had seeped through the walls. He turned to face the children.

"Galileo Galilei," he said, "was born in Italy in fifteen six four. He was the son of a musician, a man who believed that mathematics was too uncertain a profession for his son. He disagreed. He studied medicine, because medicine was what his father wanted. But at night, in his room, he built telescopes."

He paused to let the dust settle. The oil lamp on his desk flickered.

"He was the first man," Professor Calloway continued, "to point a telescope at the sky and see something that was not what he expected. He saw mountains on the moon. He saw that the Milky Way was not a cloud but a collection of individual stars — millions of them. He saw four moons orbiting Jupiter, which proved that not everything in the universe orbits the Earth, which proved that the Earth was not the center of everything, which got him in a great deal of trouble with men who believed that the Earth was the center of everything."

One of the children, a girl named Mary, raised her hand. She was twelve, the oldest, and had begun to grow into her limbs in a way that made her look awkward and childlike simultaneously.

"Did they make him stop?" she asked.

"No," Professor Calloway said. "They made him stop teaching. They made him stop publishing. They put him under house arrest for the last ten years of his life. He died blind. But he had already shown the world that the universe was bigger than anyone had imagined, and that could not be unshown."

He picked up a piece of chalk and wrote on the blackboard: v' = v - u

"What is this?" he asked.

"Relative velocity," said a boy named William. He was eleven, quiet, with a face that was all concentration. "If you're on a train moving at velocity u, and you walk forward at velocity v, your velocity relative to the ground is v minus u."

"Correct," Professor Calloway said. "Galileo showed us that there is no absolute rest. There is no position in the universe from which you can say 'this is still, and everything else is moving.' Every motion is relative to something else. The train moves relative to the ground. The ground moves relative to the train. The Earth moves relative to the Sun. The Sun moves relative to the center of the galaxy. The galaxy moves relative to—"

He stopped. He wrapped the damp cloth tighter around his face. The dust was getting worse. He could feel it in his lungs, a dry scratchiness that had been building for weeks.

"—relative to whatever you choose as your reference point," he finished.

He was not dying. He was simply exhausted. Six months ago, the University of Kansas had cut the astronomy department due to budget constraints. He had been a promising lecturer in stellar spectroscopy, working on classifying stars by their spectral lines. He had believed that understanding the stars could give people perspective — that knowing how small and how temporary human struggles are could help them endure. But the Depression had hit, the university had cut his department, and he had come to the country school. At first he thought it was a step down. Now he realized it was his true calling.

He looked at the five children sitting on their benches, their faces pale but their eyes bright, and he thought: these children will know about Galileo. They will know that the Earth is not the center of everything. They will know that the universe is bigger than their wheat fields and their dust storms and their bank foreclosures. They will know this, and it will not put food on their tables or save their farms from the bank, but it will be there, inside them, like a seed buried in dust.

"Repeat after me," he said. "Relative velocity equals velocity minus—"

"Velocity minus the reference point," said Mary.

"Correct."

The children repeated the phrase until it was memorized, their voices rising and falling in the oil-lit room, outside the wall of brown darkness that stretched across the entire western horizon.

One thousand light-years away, in a region of space that no human being had ever seen, a detection beam swept across the solar system. It was a beam of electromagnetic radiation, no wider than a human hair, moving at the speed of light. It passed through the roof of the one-room schoolhouse, through the adobe walls, through the five children who sat on their benches repeating Galileo's words, and continued on into the earth below, where it emerged on the other side of the planet and swept out into space again.

Inside the computer of a vessel the size of a moon, orbiting a star that no human being knew existed, the data from that beam was processed. Five human beings were digitally replicated in a simulated blue void. Their digital copies stood in the void, uncertain and afraid, until the computer gave them a floor — a floor of pure white, marked with black lines in a grid pattern that resembled a child's exercise book.

One of the children picked up a piece of chalk and drew a line across the floor. It went on forever in both directions, a straight line that never curved, never stopped.

They had seen Galileo's first principle.

A voice, ethereal and resonant, echoed through the digital universe.

"Begin 3C-level civilization test. Question 14: What is the relationship between the motion of an object and the frame of reference from which it is observed?"

The boy named William spoke. His voice was quiet but clear, carrying the flat, uninflected accent of the Kansas prairie.

"There is no absolute motion," he said. "Every motion is relative to the observer's frame of reference. Relative velocity equals velocity minus the reference point."

"Question 14 passed."

The dust storm passed on the seventh day. For the first time in twenty-one days, sunlight broke through the brown darkness and fell across the wheat fields, which were buried under inches of dust but whose roots were still alive underground.

Professor Calloway walked the children home across the wheat fields. They walked in silence, their boots sinking into the dust, their eyes turned upward toward the sky that was slowly returning to blue.

At the edge of Mary's family's farm, the professor stopped. He turned to face the children.

"The dust will settle," he said. "The wheat will grow again. And the stars — the stars will still be there, whether anyone is here to look at them or not."

Mary looked up at the sky. The stars were not visible in the daylight, but she knew they were there. She thought about Galileo, about the mountains on the moon and the moons orbiting Jupiter, about a man who had been put under house arrest for showing the world that it was bigger than anyone had imagined.

She thought about the dust storm, about the way the brown wall had swallowed the sky for twenty-one days, about the way she had sat in the schoolhouse and repeated Galileo's words while the dust seeped through the walls. She thought about the fact that the stars had been there the whole time, above the dust, invisible but not gone.

"Professor?" she said.

"Yes, Mary?"

"Will you teach us about the planets next week?"

He smiled. It was the first time he had smiled in weeks. "Yes, Mary. We will study Jupiter next week. It is the largest planet in the solar system. It has ninety-two known moons. And if you look at it through a telescope, it appears as a small disk with four bright points of light orbiting it — moons that Galileo saw four hundred years ago, and that we will see four hundred years from now, whether anyone is here to look at them or not."

Mary nodded. She did not understand everything he had told her. She did not understand relative velocity or spectral lines or the fact that the Earth was not the center of everything. But she understood this: the stars would still be there next week. And he would still be there to teach her about them.
