The basement flooded every time it rained. Not dramatically — just a slow seep through the concrete floor that left a dark ring around the edges of the room, like a tide mark. Dr. Richard Malloy had stopped trying to fix it six months ago. It was easier to teach around the water than to fight the landlord, who was easier to ignore than to fight.

He stood at the blackboard — a salvaged door hung on two hinges, painted black with chalk residue — and watched six students file into the basement classroom on West Newton Street. They came from different worlds, these six. A Polish dockworker's son with hands already calloused from twelve hours a day at the meatpacking plant. "Tonight," Dr. Malloy said, not looking up from his notes, "we're talking about forces."

He was not dying. He was simply finished. His academic career was over, his reputation was ruined, and no university in America would hire a professor who had refused to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee. He had taught theoretical physics at the University of Chicago — papers on general relativity, invitations to conferences in Geneva and Copenhagen. Then the committee had come. The Polish boy raised his hand. His name was Stanislaus, but everyone called him Stan. He was fourteen, solid-built, with a face that was all determination.

"Like when I punch a wall?" he asked. "The wall punches me back?"

"Exactly like that," Dr. Malloy said. "Your hand breaks. The wall doesn't even notice. That's the difference between your hand and the wall — your hand is softer, so it takes the damage. But the force is the same. Equal and opposite."

The Black teenager, a tall quiet boy named Elijah, raised his hand. He was sixteen, the oldest in the class, and carried himself with a guarded dignity that spoke of a man who had learned early that the world was not safe for Black boys in Chicago.

"Does it work with people?" he asked. "Like, if someone does something to you, they get the same thing back?"

Dr. Malloy paused. He looked at Elijah — really looked at him — and saw the question behind the question. What happens when a man who has spent his life being pushed by the world pushes back? What force comes back?

"It works with people," he said carefully. "But people are more complicated than walls. Sometimes when you push a person, they push back harder. Sometimes they push back in a direction you didn't expect. Sometimes they don't push back at all — they just break. But the force is still there. Equal and opposite. Always."

He was not a political man. He had tried to be, once — in the early fifties, when the committee was at its height, when his colleagues were naming names and losing their jobs and some of them were going to jail for refusing. He had testified. He had refused to name names. He had been blacklisted. And he had learned, very quickly, that the world was not fair and that honesty was not a virtue so much as a liability.

But he taught physics, and in physics, the world was fair. Forces were equal and opposite. There was no corruption, no bias, no committees. If you pushed, something pushed back. That was the most honest thing in the universe.

"Open your textbooks to page two hundred and fourteen," he said. "We're going to work through some problems."

They opened their textbooks — dog-eared, annotated in margins with pencil, passed from student to student year after year, each class leaving behind its marks like sedimentary rock. They worked through the problems in silence, the only sound the scratch of pencils on paper and the clanking of the radiator.

Dr. Malloy walked among them, correcting mistakes, answering questions, watching their faces light up when a problem finally made sense. He saw it in all of them — the moment when confusion gave way to understanding, when the abstract became concrete, when the invisible forces that governed the universe became visible through numbers and equations.

He thought about his wife, who had left him six months ago and taken their daughter to California. He thought about the committee, which had destroyed his career because he refused to betray other people's names. He thought about the basement classroom, which flooded every time it rained and would probably be condemned next winter when the heating system finally gave out.

He thought about Newton's third law. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

One thousand light-years away, in a region of space that no human being had ever seen, a detection beam swept across the solar system. It was a beam of electromagnetic radiation, no wider than a human hair, moving at the speed of light. It passed through the roof of the condemned building on West Newton Street, through the concrete walls, through the six students who sat at their desks working through physics problems, and continued on into the earth below, where it emerged on the other side of the planet and swept out into space again.

Inside the computer of a vessel the size of a moon, orbiting a star that no human being knew existed, the data from that beam was processed. Six human beings were digitally replicated in a simulated blue void. Their digital copies stood in the void, uncertain and afraid, until the computer gave them a floor — a floor of pure white, marked with black lines in a grid pattern that resembled a child's exercise book.

One of the students picked up a piece of chalk and drew two arrows on the floor, pointing in opposite directions. Equal length. Equal force.

They had seen Newton's third law.

A voice, ethereal and resonant, echoed through the digital universe.

"Begin 3C-level civilization test. Question 14: When two objects interact, what can be said about the forces they exert on each other?"

The Jewish refugee's daughter spoke. Her name was Rebecca, and her voice carried the precise, uninflected accent of someone who had learned English from textbooks rather than children.

"The forces are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction."

"Question 14 passed."

The bell rang at nine o'clock. Class was over. Dr. Malloy locked the basement door and walked out into the Chicago night.

The city was alive with neon and noise. A cab splashed through a puddle on the sidewalk, sending a spray of water across his shoes. He did not notice. He walked toward the lake, where the wind carried the smell of steel and water and something else — something like hope, or maybe just the memory of hope.

He did not know that his students had just saved the world. He did not know that a fleet of alien ships, stationed at the edge of the galactic spiral arm, had detected their knowledge and decided that humanity was worth preserving. He did not know any of these things, and he did not care.

He taught because that was what he did. It was not heroism. It was not rebellion. It was simply what he did, the way a stone falls or water flows or a force acts on another force.

Every object persists in its state of rest or uniform motion unless acted upon by an external force.

He was that force. And he would keep being it, even if the whole world was the external force acting upon him.

He reached the lakefront and stopped. The water was black in the night, rippling under the wind. He looked out across it and thought about forces — equal and opposite, invisible but real, acting on everything in the universe whether anyone noticed or not.

He turned and walked back toward the city. Tomorrow, the basement would flood again. The radiator would clank. The students would come. And he would teach them Newton's laws.
