Act I: The Frequency
The jazz played from the gramophone in the corner of James Whitfield's study, a scratchy recording of a singer whose name he had forgotten but whose voice he remembered—the way it curled around the notes like smoke, the way it seemed to say that everything beautiful was already dying and that this was somehow the most comforting thing in the world.

He had shown it to three colleagues. Two had called him imaginative. The third had called him dangerous.
Now he sat alone in his Long Island study, the jazz singer whispering about love and loss, and the card reader humming softly, and the pattern repeating itself in his mind like a prayer.

The record ended. The gramophone clicked. In the silence, James heard the hum of the card reader, and the pattern, and the stars.
Act II: The Convocation
Senator Hayes called it a waste of time. James called it the most important meeting of his life.
It took place in a small room at Columbia University, on a floor that James wasn't certain officially existed. Three people sat around a table: James, Clara (who had refused to stay behind), and Dr. Miriam Chen, a mathematician from Princeton who had independently arrived at the same conclusion as James—that the signal was not random, not natural, not anything that human science could yet explain.
"It's a message," Miriam said, her fingers tapping a rhythm on the table that matched the 173-second interval. "Not in words. In mathematics. In the language that the universe speaks natively."
"What does it say?" James asked.
Miriam looked at him, and her eyes were very bright. "It says: we hear you. And we are afraid."

"Afraid," James repeated.

Clara leaned forward. "Then why are they talking to us?"
Miriam smiled, a small, sad smile. "Because someone has to tell us. Because silence is no longer an option. Because the universe is a dark forest, and we just lit a flare."
James felt the words settle into him like stones into water. He didn't know where Miriam had heard that metaphor—he would later, in a life he couldn't yet imagine—but it felt right, as though the words had always been waiting inside him and had only needed the right speaker to release them.
Act III: The Choice

James watched the broadcast from Clara's dressing room at the Cotton Club. She was applying lipstick in the mirror, her movements precise and economical.
"Don't," she said, seeing him watch. "Don't let him make you small. What you've found is real. I know it's real."
"How do you know?"
"Because I hear it too. The signal. Not with my ears—with something else. When I sing, sometimes I hear it underneath the music, like a second voice, and it's beautiful and it's terrible and it's been there all along."
James reached for her hand. She let him take it.
Hayes had a plan. He called it the National Defense Initiative—a program to build a network of listening posts across the country, to monitor the skies, to prepare for the worst. He called it prudent. James called it fear dressed as patriotism.
But the more Hayes spoke, the more people listened. The more people listened, the more they feared. And the more they feared, the more they turned away from the stars.
James sat in his study one night, the jazz playing softly, and he made a decision.
He would send another signal. Not a response to the Cygnus transmission—not yet. Something simpler. Something that said: we are here. We are small. We are afraid. But we are also curious, and we are also hopeful, and we are also, in our own imperfect way, beautiful.

And he would send it with everything he had.
Act IV: The Waiting
The transmission took three days to compile. James worked without sleep, without food, sustained only by the jazz records Clara brought him and the certainty that this was the most important thing he would ever do.
When it was ready, he stood in the control room of the Apache Point observatory, his hand on the transmit button, and he thought about everything that had led to this moment—the war that had ended, the people who had died, the music that had played, the signal that had arrived, the fear that had spread, the hope that had refused to die.
Clara stood beside him. "Will they hear it?" she asked.
"I don't know."
"Will it matter?"
James pressed the button.
The signal left the earth at the speed of light, a ripple in the fabric of spacetime, a whisper in the vast and ancient dark. It would take years to reach Cygnus. Years for someone—or something—to hear it. Years for them to respond, if they chose to respond at all.
But it was traveling. It was out there now, moving through the spaces between the stars, through the dark forest where old things listened and waited.
James turned to Clara. She was smiling, and she was crying, and he understood that these were the same thing.
"We sent it," he said.
"We sent it," she agreed.
And somewhere, in the spaces between the atoms in their bodies and the gaps between their thoughts, something heard them. Something old and vast and ancient, something that had been listening since the first light ignited in the first star, and it heard them, and it did not answer.
Not yet.
But it heard them.
And in a universe that was almost infinitely large and almost infinitely old, being heard was, for now, enough.
