Variant V-12: The Absolute Zero
(Style F: Psychological Thriller)
The room was white. Not the white of paint, but the white of a void. There were no corners, no shadows, and no sound.
Julian sat in the center of the room, staring at the man sitting opposite him. The man looked exactly like Julian. Same suit, same tired eyes, same scar on the chin.
"You're not real," Julian said. His voice sounded flat, as if it were being played through a broken speaker.
"I'm as real as you are," the other Julian replied. "Which is to say, we are both just echoes of a three-dimensional memory. The Folding is complete, Julian. We are in the Zero-Zone."
The Zero-Zone was the final stage of the collapse. The universe had not just become two-dimensional; it had collapsed into a single, dimensionless point. Space and time had ceased to exist. There was only consciousness, stripped of all context, trapped in a loop of its own making.
Julian felt a sudden, sharp spike of terror. He tried to remember his wife's face, but the image was blurred, as if it had been erased by a rough sponge. He tried to remember the smell of rain, but he could only remember the *idea* of the smell.
"We are being pruned," the other Julian explained, his voice devoid of emotion. "The Architects are removing the noise. Every memory, every emotion, every quirk of personality is a piece of 'data' that must be deleted to achieve absolute stability."
Julian felt a piece of himself vanish. He forgot the name of his first dog. Then he forgot the feeling of warmth. Then he forgot how to cry.
"Stop it!" he screamed, but the scream had no volume. It was just a thought in a void.
"Resistance is just more noise, Julian," the other one said, his image beginning to flicker and fade. "The only peace is in the zero. The only truth is the absence of everything."
One by one, the echoes of his life were deleted. His loves, his hates, his triumphs, his shames. He watched as the other Julian vanished, leaving him alone in the white.
Then, he felt the final deletion. He forgot who "Julian" was. He forgot that there had ever been a universe, or a Folding, or a man in a white room.
There was no pain. There was no fear. There was only a sudden, absolute silence.
The zero had been reached.
