The Distant Crown

The smell of rotting apples hung heavy in the air. It was a thick, cloying scent. It clung to the stone walls of the keep. It seeped into the wool of Sir Kaelen’s tunic. He stood in the courtyard. Rain pattered on the flagstones. Each drop was a small, cold hammer.

Kaelen was a man of few words. His hands were scarred. The skin was hard like leather. He had spent twenty years on the field. He knew the weight of a sword. He knew the taste of blood. But he did not know this. He did not know the weight of the crown.

It sat on a velvet cushion in the throne room. The gold was dark. It was dull. It looked like a piece of iron. It had been there for a hundred years. No one had touched it. The air around it felt thin. It felt wrong.

High Lord Aldous watched him. Aldous was old. His face was a map of wrinkles. His eyes were bright. They were sharp. He sat on the high seat. He did not move. He did not blink.

"Pick it up," Aldous said.

His voice was dry. It scraped against the silence.

Kaelen looked at the crown. He looked at Aldous. He did not reach for it.

"Sir," Kaelen said.

"Yes?" Aldous asked.

"It is heavy," Kaelen said.

"Not with your hands," Aldous said. "With your spirit."

Kaelen frowned. He was a warrior. He did not speak in riddles. He liked straight lines. He liked clear orders. This was not clear. This was a trap.

He stepped forward. The floor was cold. He knelt. His knees hit the stone. It hurt. He ignored the pain. He reached out. His fingers brushed the gold.

It was cold. It was not metal. It felt like ice. It felt like death.

He lifted it. It was light. Too light. It floated in his hand. It did not have the weight of gold. It had the weight of nothing.

He placed it on his head.

The world did not change. The rain still pattered. The apples still rotted. But something inside him changed. A crack appeared in his chest. It was small. It was sharp.

Aldous smiled. It was a thin smile. It did not reach his eyes.

"Now you are the King," Aldous said.

Kaelen looked down. He saw his hands. They were trembling. He clenched them into fists. The pain was sharp. It was real.

"I am a soldier," Kaelen said.

"You are the shield," Aldous said. "The shield does not choose. The shield holds."

Kaelen stood up. The crown stayed on his head. It did not fall. It did not slide. It was part of him now.

He walked out of the throne room. The corridors were long. They were dark. The torches flickered. The flames were blue. They cast long shadows.

He walked alone. No one followed. No one spoke. The court was silent. They watched him from the doorways. They did not bow. They did not cheer. They waited.

They knew. They all knew.

Kaelen reached the gate. He pushed it open. The wind hit his face. It was cold. It cut through his clothes.

He looked at the horizon. The sky was gray. The fields were brown. The earth was dead.

He thought of his brother. His brother was dead. He had died in the war. He had died for the old King. The old King had given him nothing. He had given him orders. He had given him blood.

Kaelen had carried his brother’s body. He had held it until it was cold. He had felt the weight of it. It was the heaviest thing he had ever held.

Now he held this. This hollow thing. This lie.

He turned back to the castle. The stones were gray. They were old. They had seen many men. They had seen many crowns.

He entered the hall. Aldous was gone. The high seat was empty. The cushion was empty.

Kaelen sat on the floor. He leaned against the wall. He closed his eyes.

He heard a voice. It was faint. It was far away.

"Kaelen."

It was his name. It was not Aldous’s voice. It was not his own voice.

"Kaelen."

He opened his eyes. No one was there.

The crown was heavy. It was pressing on his skull. It was pressing on his mind.

He remembered the story. The old stories. The ones they told by the fire. The crown was cursed. It drank the soul. It took the light. It left the shadow.

He had laughed at the story. He was a man of the sword. He did not believe in ghosts. He did not believe in magic.

But the rain was still falling. The apples were still rotting. The smell was still there.

He stood up. He walked to the window. The glass was dirty. He could not see the sky. He could only see his reflection.

He looked old. He looked tired. He looked like a man who had been dead for a long time.

He touched the crown. It was cold.

"I am not the King," he whispered.

The voice spoke again.

"You are the vessel."

Kaelen turned around. The hall was empty.

He walked to the armory. He took his sword. It was rusted. It was dull. He had not used it in years.

He walked to the gate again. He opened it.

The soldiers were waiting. They stood in a line. They held their spears. They did not move.

Their faces were blank. They had no eyes. They had no mouths. They were shadows.

Kaelen looked at them. He looked at the first one.

"Who are you?" he asked.

The shadow did not answer. It did not move.

Kaelen raised his sword. He swung it. It cut the air. It cut nothing.

He swung again. And again.

The shadows did not bleed. They did not fall. They stood there. They waited.

Kaelen stopped. He lowered his sword. His arm was shaking.

He understood.

He was not fighting men. He was fighting fate. He was fighting the role. He was fighting the crown.

He could not win. He could not escape.

He looked at the crown. It was still on his head. It was still there.

He thought of his brother. He thought of the love he had for him. It was a fire. It was a light. It was the only thing that was real.

But that light was gone. It had gone out.

Kaelen walked back into the castle. He walked to the throne room. He sat on the high seat.

The cushions were soft. They were red. They looked like blood.

He sat there. He did not move. He did not speak.

The rain stopped. The sun came out. It was bright. It was harsh. It burned the stone.

Kaelen closed his eyes. He waited.

He waited for the end. He waited for the light. He waited for the peace.

It did not come.

The crown was heavy. It was always heavy.

He was the shield. The shield holds.

The years passed. They were short. They were long.

Kaelen grew old. His hair turned white. His face wrinkled. His body weakened.

But the crown did not change. It stayed gold. It stayed cold.

Aldous died. New lords came. New men sat on the seats.

They bowed to Kaelen. They called him King.

He did not answer. He did not move.

He was a statue. He was a stone.

He was the shadow.

One day, a young man came to the hall. He was a squire. He was new. His eyes were bright.

He looked at Kaelen. He saw the crown. He saw the old man.

He stepped forward. He knelt.

"Your Majesty," the boy said.

Kaelen did not open his eyes.

"Are you the King?" the boy asked.

Kaelen said nothing.

The boy stood up. He looked at the crown. He reached out his hand.

"Let me take it," the boy said. "Let me carry it."

Kaelen opened his eyes. They were clouded. They were blind.

He looked at the boy. He saw his own face. He saw his own past.

He smiled. It was a small smile. It was sad.

"No," Kaelen said.

His voice was raspy. It was dry.

"It is not yours to carry."

The boy frowned. He looked confused. He looked angry.

"Why?" the boy asked.

"Because it is mine," Kaelen said.

He closed his eyes. He leaned back.

He felt the weight. It was familiar. It was home.

The boy left. The door closed.

The hall was silent.

Kaelen sat alone.

The crown was heavy.

He was the shield.

The shield holds.

The end was not a battle. It was a silence. It was a stillness.

He breathed in. He breathed out.

The air was cold.

He was the King.

He was the shadow.

He was the light that had gone out.

And he was still there.
