The Distant Nightmare
The iron gate was locked. It had always been locked.
Caleb sat on the cold stone floor of the cell. The air smelled of damp moss and old rust. He was a soldier. He had worn the red coat for ten years. He had marched in step. He had kept his eyes down. Now the coat was gone. His skin was pale. His hands were bound with chains that bit into his wrists.
Across the small room sat another man. He was thin. He wore a gray robe. His hair was white and wild. He did not look at Caleb. He looked at the wall. Or perhaps he looked through it. His name was Elias. He was a priest. Or he had been. No one was sure anymore.
The cell was deep underground. The stone walls wept. Water dripped from the ceiling. *Tick. Tick. Tick.* It was a slow clock. It was the only clock.
Caleb tried to pull his hands free. The chains rattled. The sound was sharp. It cut the silence. Elias did not flinch. He just sat there. He breathed in. He breathed out. He was still as a statue.
A shadow moved in the corridor outside. A guard. The torchlight flickered against the iron bars. The guard stopped. He leaned in. He looked at Caleb. He looked at Elias. He said nothing. He turned away. His boots clanked on the stone. They faded into the dark.
Caleb waited. He knew the rules. He knew his place. He was a subordinate. He was the muscle. Elias was the mind. Elias was the voice. Caleb was the silence.
But the silence was heavy. It pressed against his chest. It felt like a stone. He hated it. He hated the dark. He hated the waiting. He wanted to act. He wanted to fight. He wanted to break the chains. He wanted to scream.
He looked at Elias. The priest’s face was unreadable. It was a mask. It was smooth. It was empty. Caleb felt a surge of anger. It burned in his gut. It was hot and bright. He was a man of action. He was a man of duty. This old man was a ghost. A phantom. A waste of space.
Why were they here?
The memory was foggy. The trial had been strange. The judges had not spoken. They had only pointed. One finger at Caleb. One finger at Elias. Then the door closed. Then the darkness. Then this.
Caleb stared at the floor. A crack ran through the stone. It looked like a vein. It looked like a road. He traced it with his eye. He wanted to follow it. He wanted to go somewhere. Anywhere.
Elias moved. He shifted his weight. The sound was soft. Like dry leaves. Caleb snapped his head up.
Elias was smiling. It was a small smile. It did not reach his eyes. It was a cruel thing. It was a sad thing. Caleb felt a chill. It went down his spine.
Caleb did not understand. He did not want to understand. He wanted to be angry. He wanted to be strong. He wanted to be the hero. He wanted to save them. But he could not save himself. He could not save the old man. He could not save the truth.
The torchlight flickered again. The shadows danced. The walls seemed to breathe. The air grew thick. It was hard to pull a breath. It was hard to think.
Caleb’s mind raced. He was a soldier. He solved problems. He found the weak point. He struck. He won. That was the way. That was the law.
He looked at the chains. The metal was cold. It was hard. It was unyielding. He pulled. He strained. His muscles bunched. The chains held. They did not care about his strength. They did not care about his rank. They did not care about his name.
He was weak. He was small. He was nothing.
The realization hit him. It was a blow. It was sudden. It was total. He had been fighting the chains. He had been fighting the dark. He had been fighting Elias. But he was not fighting any of those things. He was fighting himself.
He was the lock. He was the key. He was the gate.
The thought was strange. It was slippery. It escaped him. He tried to grab it. It slipped away. Like smoke. Like water.
Elias closed his eyes. His face was peaceful. He was sleeping. Or he was dreaming. Or he was dead. It did not matter. He was gone. He was free.
Caleb felt a pang. It was sharp. It was deep. It was a kind of pain he had never felt before. It was not the pain of a wound. It was not the pain of a bruise. It was the pain of loss. It was the pain of letting go.
He looked at his hands. They were bound. They were useless. They were part of him. They were the problem. They were the solution.
He stopped pulling. He let go.
The tension in his body drained away. It flowed out of him. It went into the floor. It went into the stone. It went into the dark.
He sat still. He breathed in. He breathed out.
The silence returned. It was not empty anymore. It was full. It was alive. It was a presence. It was a companion.
Caleb looked at the crack in the floor. It was still there. It was still a vein. It was still a road. But it did not lead away. It led inward.
He realized then that the cell was not a prison. It was a mirror. The stone was his skin. The chains were his thoughts. The dark was his soul.
He had been trying to break out. He had been trying to escape. He had been trying to win.
But you cannot win a war with yourself. You cannot beat a mirror. You cannot break a reflection.
You can only look.
Caleb looked. He looked at the darkness. He looked at the fear. He looked at the anger. He looked at the pride. He looked at the need to be right. He looked at the need to be strong.
He saw them all. He did not fight them. He did not run from them. He just watched. He watched them move. He watched them change. He watched them fade.
The fear became a shadow. The anger became a heat. The pride became a light.
They were not enemies. They were parts of him. They were the fabric of his being. They were the threads of his self.
To be himself was to be all of them. To be himself was to be none of them.
The distinction was lost. The duality was gone.
Caleb felt a warmth. It spread from his chest. It went to his arms. It went to his legs. It went to his feet. It was a gentle heat. It was a soft glow.
It was not magic. It was not a miracle. It was a release. It was a surrender. It was a peace.
He felt a connection. It was subtle. It was faint. It was there. It was between him and the stone. It was between him and the air. It was between him and Elias.
Elias was not asleep. Elias was awake. Elias was watching. Elias was waiting.
Elias opened his eyes. They were clear. They were bright. They were full of light.
Caleb looked at him. He did not smile. He did not frown. He just looked.
Elias smiled. It was a real smile this time. It reached his eyes. It was a smile of understanding. It was a smile of acceptance. It was a smile of love.
Caleb felt it. He felt the love. It was primal. It was instinctual. It was beyond reason. It was the bond between men who have seen the bottom. It was the bond between men who have lost everything. It was the bond between friends.
He did not need to speak. He did not need to move. He did not need to act.
He just was.
The torchlight outside flared. It was bright. It was blinding. The door opened. The guard was there. He held a key. He held a torch. His face was stern. His eyes were hard.
He looked at Caleb. He looked at Elias.
Caleb did not flinch. He did not pull. He sat still. He was calm. He was quiet. He was ready.
The guard unlocked the door. The sound was loud. It echoed. It rang in the dark.
The guard stepped aside. He pointed to the corridor. It was long. It was dark. It was endless.
Caleb stood up. His legs were stiff. He swayed. He steadied himself. He looked at Elias.
Elias stood up. He was slow. He was frail. But he was straight. He was tall. He was dignified.
They walked out. They walked side by side. Their chains were gone. The guard had taken them. The chains lay on the floor. They were just metal now. They were just objects. They were dead.
Caleb and Elias walked into the dark. They did not speak. They did not need to. They knew the way. They knew the end. They knew the choice.
They had chosen to be still. They had chosen to be true. They had chosen to be themselves.
The dark swallowed them. The light followed them. The path was clear. The road was open. The gate was open.
It was not a victory. It was not a defeat. It was a becoming.
Caleb felt the air on his face. It was cool. It was fresh. It was new.
He felt his heart beat. It was slow. It was steady. It was strong.
He felt his mind clear. It was empty. It was full. It was free.
He did not look back. There was nothing to see. There was nothing to regret. There was nothing to remember.
There was only now. There was only this. There was only them.
The walk was long. The night was deep. The stars were bright. The earth was silent.
They walked on.
The iron gate was open. It had always been open.
