The Pale Bridge

The glass is already cracked. You know this. It sits on the table, a spiderweb of fractures radiating from the rim. It is the only thing in the room that is not moving. Outside, the city roars. The factory sirens wail a low, endless note that vibrates in your teeth. You do not look up. You look at the cup.

"Are you listening to me, Elias?"

Your voice is thick. It feels like gravel in your mouth. You do not answer. You cannot answer. You are holding the cup. Your fingers are white around the handle. The coffee inside is cold. It has been cold for an hour. You have been drinking from it. You have been refilling it. You have been breaking it.

Margaret stands by the window. The light from the streetlamps cuts through the glass. It makes her face look hollow. She is a ghost. She has always been a ghost to you. A beautiful, terrible ghost.

"You have to go," she says.

"I am not going."

"You have to."

"I am not going, Margaret."

She steps closer. The floorboards creak. The sound is loud. It is the only sound in the world. The sirens stop. The silence is worse.

"Look at yourself," she says.

You look down. You see the cup. You see your hands. They are shaking. The coffee spills. It runs over the table. It drips onto the floor. It is black. It looks like blood.

"I did not mean to," you say.

"You always break things," she says. "You break everything."

"I am not you."

She laughs. It is a short, sharp sound. It sounds like a bone snapping.

"You are the mirror," she says. "I am the mirror. We are the same."

You want to deny it. You want to scream. But you are tired. You are so tired. You have been tired for years. Since you left the village. Since you came to this city. Since you met her. Since you built this life. Since you started to rot.

The cup is in your hand. It is heavy. It is full of cracks. It is about to shatter. You know it. You have known it for a long time.

"Let me go," she says.

"Where would you go?"

"Anywhere. Anywhere but here. Anywhere but with you."

You look at her. Her eyes are red. They are wet. She is crying. You have never seen her cry. You thought you were the only one who suffered. You thought you were the only one who was broken.

"I love you," you say.

The words taste like ash. They are lies. They have always been lies. But you say them anyway. Because you do not know what else to say. Because you are a coward. Because you are a traitor.

"You love the idea of me," she says. "You do not love me. You love the version of me that you made."

She is right. You made her. You took a stranger. You gave her a name. You gave her a shape. You gave her a story. You made her into a wife. You made her into a mother. You made her into a ghost.

"I am not a ghost," she says.

"You are," you say. "I made you a ghost."

The cup slips. It hits the floor. It shatters. The sound is loud. It is final. The coffee splashes. It stains the wood. It stains your shoes. It stains your soul.

"Stop it," she says.

"I am stopping."

"No. You are not. You are just changing the shape of the lie."

You pick up a shard of glass. It is sharp. It cuts your finger. A drop of blood falls. It hits the coffee. It mixes. It becomes a dark red. It looks like wine. It looks like life.

"I am done," she says.

She walks to the door. She opens it. The cold air rushes in. It smells of rain. It smells of iron. It smells of the city.

"Come with me," she says.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I cannot."

"Then you stay here. You stay in your hell."

She leaves. The door closes. The click is soft. It is the sound of an ending. You are alone. You are with the shards. You are with the coffee. You are with the silence.

You sit down. You look at your hand. The cut is bleeding. You do not stop it. You want to see how much you can lose. You want to see how much you can break.

The city wakes up. The trams begin to run. The wheels clang on the tracks. The sound is rhythmic. It is mechanical. It is indifferent.

You remember the day you arrived. You remember the train. You remember the fear. You remember the promise. You thought you would be safe. You thought you would be free. You were wrong. You are never safe. You are never free. You are only trapped.

You are trapped in your own skin. You are trapped in your own mind. You are trapped in the mirror.

You look at the window. You see your reflection. It is pale. It is thin. It looks like a stranger. It looks like a ghost.

Who are you?

You do not know. You have forgotten. You have lost yourself. You have traded it for safety. You have traded it for love. You have traded it for a life.

But it was a lie. It was a fake life. It was a performance. You were the actor. She was the audience. And now the show is over.

You pick up another shard. You hold it up to the light. It is clear. It is transparent. It shows you the room. It shows you the stains. It shows you the mess.

It shows you the truth.

You are not a good man. You are not a bad man. You are a broken man. And you will never be whole again.

The phone rings. It is loud. It is violent. It breaks the silence. You do not answer. Let it ring. Let it scream.

It stops. The silence returns. It is heavier now. It presses against your chest. It presses against your eyes.

You stand up. Your legs are weak. You feel dizzy. You feel sick. You want to vomit. You want to scream.

But you do not. You are a ghost. Ghosts do not scream. Ghosts do not vomit. Ghosts just drift.

You walk to the sink. You turn on the tap. The water is cold. It runs over your hand. It washes the blood away. It washes the coffee away. It washes the glass away.

But it does not wash you away.

You look in the mirror above the sink. The face staring back is yours. It is tired. It is old. It is empty.

You have lost. You have always lost. You fought the mirror. You tried to break it. You tried to destroy it. But the mirror is you. You cannot destroy yourself. You can only abandon yourself.

You leave the bathroom. You walk to the door. You open it. The hallway is dark. The light from the stairs is yellow. It is dim.

You step out. You close the door. You do not lock it. You do not look back.

You walk down the stairs. The steps are worn. The wood is groaning. You feel every step. You feel the weight of your body. You feel the weight of your past.

You reach the street. The air is cold. It bites your face. It bites your lungs.

The city is awake. People are walking. They are hurrying. They are talking. They are laughing. They are living.

You are not living. You are passing through. You are a shadow. You are a ghost.

You walk. You do not know where you are going. You do not have a destination. You do not have a home. You do not have a name.

You are no one.

And that is the only freedom you have ever had.

You walk. The rain begins. It is light. It is mist. It soaks your clothes. It soaks your skin.

You do not care. You are cold. You are empty. You are free.

The mirror is gone. The cup is broken. The love is dead.

And you are alive.

You walk into the rain. You walk into the night. You walk into the unknown.

You are alone.

You are free.

You are broken.

And it is enough.
