Somewhere in Nebraska, as the sun set over fields of wheat that bent in the wind like the surface of a golden sea, he pulled over and wept. He wept for the man he had been when he arrived in Marlowe, full of hope and equations and the belief that bridges could be built. He wept for the thousand small subtractions that had unmade that man. He wept for Margaret, who had seen him and could not save him.
