Sample V-05: The Diamond Debt

The rain in Los Angeles didn't wash anything away; it just made the filth shine. I was a nurse at St. Jude's, the kind of place where the patients died and the doctors drank. I'd seen everything, or so I thought, until the night the woman in the red dress collapsed in the emergency bay. She looked like a million dollars, but she was leaking something that wasn't blood.

She hadn't been hit by a car. She'd been hit by a "glitch"—a freak electrical discharge from a nearby experimental power plant that had left her skin humming with a low, dangerous frequency. She was a corporate spy, a ghost in the machine, and she was leaking energy that could have fried every monitor in the ward.

I didn't follow protocol. I didn't call the technicians. I just held her. I used my own body as a ground, absorbing the shocks that charred my forearms, keeping her stable until the frequency subsided. I did it because she looked at me with eyes that had seen the bottom of the world, and for a second, I felt like I wasn't alone in the dark. I felt a kinship with her, two broken things trying to survive in a city that ate the weak.

Two weeks later, she visited me. She didn't bring flowers. She brought a necklace—a string of diamonds that looked like frozen tears. "A token of my gratitude," she whispered, her voice a smoky velvet that promised things I couldn't afford.

I took the necklace. I was stupid. I didn't ask where it came from. I didn't know that the diamonds belonged to Moretti, the most ruthless syndicate boss on the West Coast. I thought I had found a friend; I had actually just accepted a target on my back.

By the end of the month, Moretti's men were in my apartment. They didn't want the diamonds; they wanted the woman. And since she had given the jewels to me, I was the only lead they had. I spent the next three days tied to a chair in a warehouse, watching the woman I'd saved negotiate my life for a percentage of a shipment of narcotics.

She walked away with a smile, and I walked away with a scar across my throat. In this city, kindness is just a down payment on a betrayal.
