I.
The winter of 1923 hit New York like a hammer, and Tom O'Brien felt every blow. He stood in his basement apartment on Orchard Street, stirring a pot of soy milk that smelled of home—a home he had left seven years ago, when the potato fields of County Cork could no longer feed his family.

Tom picked up the sack of beans. He would use them tomorrow. He would make soy milk. He would give five cups to whoever needed them. And he would keep planting.
Outside, New York was falling apart. But inside the O'Brien Soy House, the soy milk was warm, and the beans were golden, and for now, that was enough.
