I.
The rain in Los Angeles doesn't wash anything clean. It just makes the grime slicker. I learned that in three years on the street, selling breakfast sandwiches from a cart that cost me forty bucks at a police auction.
My name's Jack Moran. I'm thirty-two, divorced, and I carry a VA disability check that covers exactly half of what I need to survive in a city that charges seven dollars for a cup of coffee and three for a parking space that's two feet wider than my car.
I was walking home from the 7-Eleven—three tuna sandwiches, a pack of Lucky Strikes, and a bottle of cheap bourbon—when I heard it. A sound from the gutter behind a diner on Santa Monica Boulevard. Not a cat. Not a rat. Something in between.

I said: "A friend."

"Mr. Henry."

I went back to my beach apartment and sat on the balcony and watched LA glitter in the distance. Neon lights. Traffic. The ocean, black and endless. I didn't know where the ingredients came from. I didn't want to know. But I knew one thing: people like Mr. Henry don't let go of their investments.

III.

I said nothing.

I sat in the dark, listening to the ocean. The whiskey bottle was empty. The cash was on the table. The sandwiches—ten of them, wrapped in wax paper, smelling like roses and cheese and money—were in the refrigerator, waiting for tomorrow.
I thought about the fox. I thought about its golden eyes, looking up at me from the gutter, trusting me to do the right thing. I had done the right thing. And the right thing had led me here, to a city of neon and lies, making sandwiches for men who owned everything and wanted everything else.
I picked up the phone and dialed a number I hadn't called in three years—my ex-wife's number. She answered on the fourth ring.
"Jack? Is everything alright?"
"Yeah," I said. "Yeah, everything's fine."
It wasn't. But I wasn't going to tell her. Not tonight. Not ever, probably. Some things you carry alone.
"Good," she said. "Sleep well."
"I will," I lied.
IV.
Morning came, gray and humid, the kind of LA dawn that promises heat but delivers fog. I made the sandwiches. Ten of them. Ham that smelled like roses, cheese that melted like butter, bread that was baked that morning in a bakery I didn't know existed until Mr. Henry introduced me to it.
I set them on the cart. I waited for the customers. They came—regulars, tourists, men in suits who ate standing up and checked their watches. I handed out the sandwiches, took their money, smiled when they smiled.
At ten o'clock, the yellow coat appeared at the end of the block. Mr. Henry walked toward me, his steps slow and deliberate, his eyes fixed on mine. He stopped at the cart, looked at the ten sandwiches, and nodded.
"Good morning, Mr. Moran."
"Morning."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out an envelope. Thick. He set it on the cart. "This month's payment. Double what we agreed on."
"Mr. Henry—"
"Ten sandwiches, Mr. Moran. That was the deal."
He turned and walked away, his yellow coat bright against the gray morning, disappearing into the fog like a dream you can't quite remember when you wake up.
I stood there, holding the envelope, watching the fog eat the city one block at a time. The sandwiches sat on the cart, perfect and warm and poisonous.
I thought about the fox. I thought about the gutter. I thought about the chain.
Then I picked up the envelope, opened the cart, and started selling.
