She looked at him for a long moment — looked at the man who had been her husband and her betrayer and the architect of twenty-three years of gradual, accumulating, nearly invisible catastrophe — and she saw something in his eyes she had not seen since 1861, when a young ironmonger's son with calloused hands had told her he was going to build a railroad that would connect the whole suffering human family.
