The Bayou's Gift
The swamp was eating the cabin. Zeke knew this the way a man knows his own heartbeat—slowly, inevitably, without the ability to stop it. The water crept closer every rainy season. The cypress knees poked through the floorboards like broken fingers. The walls leaned inward, as if the swamp were pressing against them, patient and persistent and hungry.
Zeke Beaumont didn't mind. The cabin was all that remained of his family. His great-grandfather had built it during Reconstruction, when the Beaumont name still meant something in this parish. His grandfather had drunk it away. His father had died in a moonshine still explosion, taking half his face with it. Zeke had inherited the cabin, the still, and the pockmarks from smallpox.
He made moonshine because it was all he knew. The corn, the yeast, the patience, the patience. His grandmother had taught him the recipe the winter before she died, sitting in this very cabin while the swamp whispered through the cracks in the wall. "You keep making it," she had said. "Not for the money. For the keeping. The keeping is what matters."
One evening, as the sun was setting and painting the swamp in shades of orange and purple and something that wasn't quite a colour, a fox appeared at the edge of his clearing.
She was missing her left hind leg—a trap, probably, from years ago, the scar tissue still raised and pale. Her fur was the colour of dried blood, and she moved with a limping grace that made her look like she was dancing rather than struggling. She stopped at the edge of the clearing and watched him.
Zeke offered her a scrap of cornbread. She ate it. She did not leave.
He named her Scarlet. Not because she was red—though she was—or because she was dangerous—though she might have been. He named her because it was the only name that fit a fox who looked like she had stepped out of a story his grandmother used to tell.
Scarlet stayed. She sat on the porch while Zeke drank whiskey. She watched the swamp. She listened to the sounds that came out of the water at night—gators, frogs, things that had no name and made sounds that had no name.
Sometimes, when Zeke was sitting on the porch talking to the swamp—the way you talk when you're the only living thing for five miles and the cypress trees don't answer back—he heard sounds from the bushes. Sounds that almost formed words. Almost.
"Can you hear me?" he asked the bushes one evening.
A branch moved. A sound came—low, guttural, almost like: yes.
Zeke poured a little whiskey on the ground. Scarlet drank it. She didn't seem to mind the burn.
The ginseng grew in a patch near the old river bend, beneath a canopy of oak and Spanish moss. Zeke found it because Scarlet led him there—limping ahead, stopping occasionally to look back and make sure he was following. He dug with his shovel, careful and slow, and found roots that were old and twisted and worth more than he had ever made in a single night of distilling.
He took the ginseng to New Orleans. The buyer at the apothecary counted the roots and whistled. "Where'd you find this?" he asked. "Good land," Zeke said. "Old land."
The money from the ginseng bought him three months of whiskey corn and a new still. But Scarlet kept leading him to things—patches of wild herbs, hidden springs, spots beneath ancient oaks where, if he dug, his shovel hit something hard.
Metal.
The tin box was rusted shut, buried beneath the roots of a cypress that must have been three hundred years old. Zeke pried it open with his knife. Inside: gold coins. Confederate gold, wrapped in oilcloth, hidden by a Beaumont—his great-grandfather, probably, or his great-grandfather's brother.
He counted them in the cabin by candlelight. Forty-seven coins. Each one worth more than he had ever held in his hands. Enough to rebuild the cabin. Enough to buy back a fraction of the Beaumont land. Enough to change everything.
But money changes things whether you spend it or not. Word got out. Zeke heard it in New Orleans, at the apothecary, at the feed store, at the bar where he bought whiskey. People were talking about the Beaumont heir who had struck gold. Literally.
Mr. Beauregard Whitfield's men started appearing on the edge of Zeke's clearing. They didn't come close. They just stood there, watching, in black cars with tinted windows. Whitfield's family had acquired the Beaumont land during Reconstruction through means that Zeke's grandmother described as "theft with a smile." Now they were watching him dig up their old treasure.
Deputy Crocker came on a Tuesday. He was a large man with a large face and eyes that had never seen anything worth feeling sorry about. He came with two other men. They parked their truck at the edge of the clearing and walked toward the cabin.
"Mr. Beaumont," Crocker said. "We need to talk about that gold."
"I don't know what you're talking about," Zeke said.
"The gold," Crocker repeated. "The gold that's on Beaumont land. Which, technically, belongs to the parish. Which, through various legal channels, belongs to my employer."
Zeke held his shovel. It was a heavy shovel, iron head, hickory handle. He had used it to dig graves and dig wells and dig foundations. He knew how heavy it was.
"Get off my land," he said.
Crocker smiled. It was not a kind smile. "You don't own this land, Mr. Beaumont. Nobody does, really. The swamp owns it. The alligators own it. We just pretend we do."
Zeke drove them off. Not with violence—with the land itself. He led them into a mud pit hidden beneath a carpet of moss. Crocker's men sank to their knees. Crocker himself went waist-deep in three seconds. Zeke watched from the safety of solid ground as they flailed and cursed and swore.
"Get out," he said. "And don't come back."
They got out. But Crocker took his revenge that night. He came back with a torch and set the cabin on fire.
Zeke saw the flames from the ginseng patch. He ran. He reached the cabin as the roof was already collapsing, the fire eating through the dry wood like a living thing. He stood in the yard and watched his family's last remaining structure burn—the cabin his great-grandfather had built, his grandfather had drunk away, his father had died near, and he had lived in.
Scarlet sat beside him. She did not try to run. She did not try to save anything. She simply sat, watching the fire, her three legs steady beneath her, her blood-red fur catching the orange light.
When the fire was done, Zeke stood in the ashes. The tin box was gone—melted, or burned, or swallowed by the collapse. The gold was gone. The cabin was gone. Everything was gone.
He picked up the tin box lid from the ashes. It was warped and blackened, but the coins inside had been wrapped in oilcloth, and a few had survived—three coins, small and dark and useless.
Zeke looked at them. He looked at the swamp. He looked at Scarlet.
He walked to the water's edge. He opened his hand. The three coins sank into the dark water like tears.
Scarlet watched him. Then she turned and limped into the cypress trees, disappearing into the fog the way she had appeared—quietly, inevitably, like something the swamp had decided to show him for a while and then take back.
Zeke rebuilt his cabin. Smaller this time. Lower to the ground. The swamp kept creeping. He didn't fight it anymore.
He continued making moonshine. Not for money. For the keeping. The keeping was what mattered.
The swamp kept the gold. The swamp kept the cabin. The swamp kept everything.
And sometimes, on quiet evenings, when the fog rolled in thick and the cypress trees stood like ghosts in the mist, Zeke would sit on his porch and drink whiskey and listen to the sounds from the bushes—the sounds that almost formed words.
