The wind came down off the moors like a blade, scraping the stone walls of Thomas Hemlock's cottage until the whole house shivered in its foundations. She pulled the first tail at midnight.

It did not hurt the way Thomas expected. It hurt the way grief hurts—deep, internal, a tearing of something that was always there. The tail came away like burning parchment, and Eleanor screamed, a sound that was half cat, half woman, a sound that went up through the moors and was swallowed by the storm.

Thomas married her. He loved her gently, carefully, the way you love something fragile. But his heart belonged to the white cat on the windowsill, to the voice that had spoken to him in the dark, to the three tails that had been pulled one by one like threads from a tapestry.

Every stormy night, when the moors howled and the cottage shivered in its foundations, Thomas held the white cat in his arms and wept. He did not cry for Eleanor. He cried for the tails. He cried for the choice. He cried for the love that existed in the space between what was given and what was lost.

The villagers still called him the hunchback. But they also told stories about the hunchback and his white cat, weeping in the window while the moors raged outside. And sometimes, on quiet evenings, if you walked past the cottage on the edge of the moors, you could hear a man's voice, low and steady, reading to a cat by the fire.

The cat would listen. She always listened.

But she never spoke again.
