The Blue Note in the Rain
I didn't know Silas when he was seventeen. I knew him when he was twelve, when he still laughed at my jokes and didn't flinch when I threw snowballs at his head. That Silas was gone by the time he came back to Chicago from wherever the hell Uncle Mort had taken him. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let me start from the beginning. Or as close to it as I can get.
The warehouse on South Canal Street had been an auto repair shop before the company moved to Detroit in '43. After that, it sat empty for thirty years, collecting rust and rats and the kind of despair that only a city can breed. When my school organized a volunteer trip to deliver supplies to the mission house on State Street, nobody volunteered to sleep in the warehouse. Except me. Tommy O'Brien, they called me—Rat, to everybody who mattered, which was nobody.
"Tommy, you and Silas can take the warehouse," Miss Corrigan said. She was the head girl and the undisputed queen of our social studies class, which meant she had the kind of authority that comes from knowing exactly which boys will do anything for her approval. Silas nodded. I shrugged. That was how it worked in our group.
The warehouse smelled of oil and old sweat and something else—something metallic, like blood that had dried on the concrete floor and never quite washed out. We set up our sleeping bags in the corner furthest from the door, which was superstition, not strategy. Neither of us believed in ghosts. We believed in different things. I believed in the girl next door who smiled at me when I walked to school. Silas believed in things I couldn't name.
"You hear that?" he asked around midnight.
"Hear what?"

"Listen," Silas said again. "Just listen."
I pressed my ear to the door and listened. The voice was clearer now. It wasn't singing. It was talking. Reciting, almost. Numbers. Dates. Names.
"She's a witness," Silas said. "She saw things. Things that people in this town don't want remembered. So my uncle put her down here. Thirty years ago. She's been down here thirty years, Tommy."
"Your uncle?"
"Uncle Mort. Mortimer Moretti. You know him."
I did know him. Mortimer Moretti was the oldest man in Chicago's Italian community, a man with a face like a clenched fist and a reputation for solving problems that other people couldn't solve. He was also Silas's uncle by adoption—he wasn't related by blood, but in Chicago, blood meant less than loyalty, and Mortimer had more loyalty than most men had breath.
"What did she see?" I asked.
"That's what I'm going to find out."
Silas put his hand on the door handle. I grabbed his arm.
"Don't," I said.
He looked at me, and for the first time in three years, I saw the boy I used to know. The one who laughed at my jokes. The one who flinched when I threw snowballs.
"Why not?" he asked.
"Because some doors should stay closed."
He smiled, and the smile was terrible. "Some doors are already open, Tommy. You just haven't looked through them yet."
He opened the door.
The woman inside was sitting on the floor, her back against the wall, her knees drawn to her chest. She wore a suit that might once have been expensive, now torn and stained. Her hair was gray and tangled, falling over her face like a curtain. She looked up at us with eyes that had seen too much and remembered everything.
"Silas," she said. Her voice was rough, unused. "You came back."
"I came to get you out."
She laughed, and the laugh was bitter. "Out? Out to where? The world that put me here? The world that let them do this to me?"
"Let who do what?"
She looked at me for the first time. "You're the friend. The one who stays. Good. You'll need to remember what happens here. You'll need to tell someone."
"Tell who?"
"Tell anybody who will listen. Tell the truth. The truth is the only thing they can't lock up."
She told us everything. About the Moretti family. About the underground network that connected every warehouse, every bar, every church in Chicago. About the numbers—the bribes, the payoffs, the bodies buried in foundations and forgotten. About how Silas's father had been the kingpin, and how Uncle Mort had taken over after he died, and how Silas had been taken away at age seven to be trained, to be prepared, to be made ready to inherit everything.
"And now he is ready," Vincent said. "That's the problem. He's more ready than any of us wanted."
Silas stood in the doorway, listening. His face was expressionless. I had never seen him look so much like his uncle.
"Is it true?" he asked.
Vincent met his gaze. "Everything I said is true. The question is, what are you going to do about it?"
Silas didn't answer. He turned and walked back upstairs. I followed, leaving Vincent in the dark.
Outside, the rain had stopped. The streets of Chicago glistened under the neon lights, reflecting the signs of bars and diners and pawn shops in puddles of oil and water. Silas walked ahead of me, his hands in his pockets, his shoulders hunched against the cold.
"Silas," I said. "What are you going to do?"
He stopped and looked at me. His eyes were flat and empty, the eyes of a man who had already made a decision and was waiting for the rest of the world to catch up.
"I'm going to finish what my father started," he said.
And then he walked away, into the rain, into the neon, into the city that had made him and would eventually consume him.
I stood there for a long time, watching him go. The neon signs flickered. The puddles reflected nothing. The rain started again, steady and cold, the kind of rain that makes you question every life choice that led you to standing on a street corner in Chicago at two in the morning, watching your best friend walk away into the darkness.
I didn't follow him. I couldn't. Because part of me understood what he was doing. Part of me even admired it. But the part that loved him—the part that had played baseball with him in the park and shared sandwiches with him on the roof and laughed at his terrible jokes—that part was already dead.
I walked home alone.

I saw Silas again six months later. He was standing in front of the warehouse on Canal Street, wearing a suit that cost more than my father made in a year. He looked different. Older. Harder. The boy who laughed at my jokes was gone. In his place was a man who had learned to smile without meaning it.
"Tommy," he said. "Good to see you."
"You too," I said. It wasn't a lie. It wasn't the truth, either.
"Want to grab a drink?"
I looked at him—really looked at him—and I saw the truth. He wasn't asking me to a bar. He was asking me to join him. To become what he had become. To step into the darkness and never look back.
I thought about Vincent in the basement. Thirty years in the dark, telling the truth to nobody.
"No," I said. "I don't think I will."
Silas nodded. He wasn't surprised. He had expected this.
"Maybe someday," he said.
"Someday," I agreed.
He got into a black car that pulled up to the curb. The driver opened the door. Silas got in. The car drove away, disappearing into the rain.
I stood there for a long time, watching the place where the car had been. Then I turned and walked home, alone, through the streets of Chicago, through the rain, through the neon.
Some stories are better left untold. Some people are better left forgotten.
But I remember Silas. I remember the boy who laughed at my jokes. I remember the boy who flinched when I threw snowballs. I remember him before the darkness took him. Before the city took him. Before he became somebody else's instrument.
Before he became The Ghost.
