I.

The dock smelled of fish and diesel and things that had died in the water and been dragged to the surface by men who did not care about the smell anymore because they had stopped caring about everything except the next paycheck and whether it would be enough. Jack's job was simple at first: move things. Boxes, crates, people who needed moving from one place to another without asking questions. But Jack was not like the other men on Maroni's payroll. "I liked the man who came home with dirty hands and clean money. This man--" She gestured at the marble countertops, the new furniture, the life that had appeared like magic. "This man came home with clean hands and dirty money."

He kissed her on the forehead and went to his study, where he kept the notebook. The notebook contained names. Hundreds of names. Politicians, cops, businessmen, priests, judges. Ruth was drunk--not the casual drunk of a woman who had had too much wine at dinner, but the deep, desperate drunk of a woman who had been drinking alone in an empty house for months. Mike Donovan investigated the hit-and-run officially, because he had to. He found the evidence that would have implicated Jack--Ruth's car, her fingerprints, her confession. He had ambition, and he had the willingness to do whatever ambition required.

Within two years, Tom had built a network that rivaled Jack's. Younger, cleaner, more efficient. Tom didn't use the old methods--no bribes to cops, no payoffs to aldermen. He used something more powerful: leverage. He knew where people kept their secrets because he made them show him, and he kept those secrets the way a banker keeps gold: in a vault that only he could open.

By 1958, Tom was the man everyone went to see when they needed something done. By 1960, they were going to Tom, not Jack. By 1962, Jack realized he was no longer at the top. He was at the middle. And in Chicago, the middle was where men went to be forgotten.

He confronted Tom in the office they shared--a large room on the twentieth floor of the Merchandise Mart, with windows that overlooked the river and the bridges and the endless flow of barges and freighters that kept Chicago alive.

"You're building your own empire," Jack said.

"I'm building yours," Tom replied. "Just faster."

"That's not what it looks like."

"It looks exactly like what it is. You taught me everything I know, Jack. Every trick. Every deal. Every lie. I'm just applying your lessons more thoroughly than you ever could."

Jack sat down. He looked out the window at the river, at the barges moving slowly downstream, carrying grain and steel and coal and everything that made a city real. "How long?" he asked.

"How long since you started counting? How long since you realized you weren't the one making the decisions anymore? How long since you looked in the mirror and didn't recognize the man staring back?"

Jack didn't answer. He didn't need to. Tom had already answered every question he hadn't asked.

VI.

The rain on November 14th, 1962 was the kind of rain that made the city look like a photograph left out in a storm--everything blurred, everything bleeding into everything else. Jack sat alone in the mayor's office. The mayor--Whitcomb, still the mayor after seven years, still the puppet, still the man who signed whatever papers Jack put in front of him--was at a dinner downtown, eating steak and drinking wine and pretending he mattered.

Jack poured himself a glass of whiskey. He set it down. He didn't drink it. He just watched the ice melt, the way time melted in Chicago: slowly, inevitably, leaving everything diluted.

The door opened. A man walked in. He was young--mid-twenties, maybe. Expensive suit, cold eyes, the kind of face that belonged to a man who had never been told no.

"Mr. Kowalski," he said. "My name is Vince Corradi. Mr. Ripley sent me."

Jack didn't ask what Vince wanted. He had seen enough of these scenes in movies and in life to recognize the pattern. He poured two glasses of whiskey. He pushed one across the desk.

"Sit," he said. "Let's talk."

"I understand," he said.

VII.

The cleaning woman found him the next morning. The office was exactly as he had left it: papers on the desk, whiskey in the glass, lamp on. One exception: a single gunshot wound to the chest, clean and precise, fired at point-blank range. The window was locked from the inside. The door had been locked. There were no signs of struggle.

The police ruled it a botched robbery. An intruder had entered, been discovered, fired once, and fled. A tragic end to a prominent citizen.

Chicago knew better. They always knew. Another success story had collapsed on the ladder it had taken decades to climb. The city swallowed him the way it swallowed everything: quietly, efficiently, without ceremony.

The rain continued. The neon lights continued to flicker in the puddles on State Street. The barges continued to move down the river, carrying grain and steel and coal and the weight of a city that would outlive every man who thought he owned it.

And in a house on the North Side, a notebook sat on a desk, its pages filled with names that no one would ever read, secrets that no one would ever use, a map of a city that existed only in the mind of a man who was no longer there to draw it.
