Harold was thirty-eight years old and had been writing advertising copy for seventeen years without ever quite believing he was doing it. He had wanted to write novels — serious novels, novels about the war and the suburbs and the quiet desperation of men in gray flannel suits. Instead, he wrote slogans for diet beverages and laundry detergent and a brand of automobile tire that was, according to the campaign he had written, "rounder than the competition." He lived in a split-level house on Orchard Lane in Westport, Connecticut, with his wife Maureen and his two sons, each of whom was becoming a slightly different version of the man Harold had not become.

And sometimes, in the quiet of his classroom after the last bell, he would think about the nested campaigns, about the way a man could build a structure of lies so elaborate that he himself forgot which floor he was standing on — and about the moment when the structure collapsed, when all the stories fell into each other, and what was left was just a man in a room, telling the truth for the first time in seventeen years. The truth was not a novel and not a campaign and not an advertisement for a better life. The truth was just the truth — simple, irreducible, indifferent to whether anyone bought it or believed it or made a campaign out of it. And Harold Finch, who had spent his entire career making people want things they did not need, had finally, quietly and permanently, in the autumn of his forty-second year, learned to want nothing except the quiet satisfaction of saying what he meant and meaning what he said. It was not a novel. It was not an advertisement. It was, he realized, the first honest thing he had produced since the night in Greenwich Village when he was twenty-one years old and believed that words could change the world.
