The summer my parents died, the sky over Long Island was the colour of burnt copper.

Eleanor became a constant presence in my life. She was beautiful, intelligent, and ruthlessly ambitious. She introduced me to people I had never met: industrialists, politicians, men in suits who spoke in codes and smiled with their mouths but not their eyes.

The party was held at a house in East Hampton. Eleanor had organised it—a celebration, she called it, of progress and American ingenuity. The guest list read like a telephone directory of the powerful: senators, generals, industrialists, a film director from Hollywood.

I hated every minute of it.

I stood on the terrace, looking out at the sound. The water was black and still, reflecting the stars. Somewhere inside, a jazz band was playing. Champagne flutes clinked. Laughter rose like smoke.

And I felt nothing.
