The rain in Los Angeles doesn't wash anything clean. It just makes the dirt slicker.

I was sitting in my office above a noodle shop on Temple Street when Captain O'Brien walked in. He hadn't changed since the war. Same thin face, same cold eyes, same way of entering a room like he owned it.

'Mercer,' he said. Not a greeting. A statement of fact.

'O'Brien,' I said. 'You look well.'

'I look tired. There's a difference.'

He sat down without being invited and lit a cigarette. The smoke curled up toward the water-stained ceiling. Outside, a siren wailed. Somewhere down the street, a jazz band was tuning up.

'I have a job for you,' he said.

'I'm retired, Cap. You know that.'

'This isn't military. It's civilian. Three deaths in the past month. All ruled as lightning strikes. Natural causes.'

'Then call the coroner.'

'All three men worked on Manhattan Project projects. All three are dead. All three died with windows closed and doors locked.'

I looked at him. 'You think it's murder.'

'I think you're the only private eye in this city who doesn't ask questions before he works.'

'I ask questions after,' I said. But I took the job.

The first victim was named Harold Finch. He lived in a small bungalow in South LA, behind a fence with half the pickets rotted out. I talked to his widow. She was a small, nervous woman with tired eyes.

'Mr. Finch was an electrical engineer,' she told me. 'During the war, he worked on explosives. After the war, he set up a small lab in his garage. He said he was working on something important.'

'What kind of something?'

She shook her head. 'I never asked. He didn't like to talk about work.'

'What happened the night he died?'

'He was in the garage. I was in the kitchen. I heard a sound—like a hum, low and steady. Then a flash of light through the wall. Then nothing. When I went to the garage, the door was locked from the inside. The window was closed. But Harold was—' She stopped. Her hands were shaking. 'He was burned. But not like fire burned him. Like electricity. But there was no wire, no socket, nothing.'

I went to the garage. It was a small, cluttered space filled with tools and half-finished projects. On the workbench, I found a set of copper coils and a bank of glass tubes. Amateur equipment, but well-made. Someone who knew what they were doing.

The second victim was a government contractor named Walter Briggs. He died in his office on the twelfth floor of a building on Spring Street. The window was open. The room was empty except for Briggs, who was sitting at his desk, dead. The coroner's report said 'lightning strike.' But there were no clouds that night. The sky was clear.

I found Vera Cross at a laboratory in Pasadena. It was a small, unmarked building on a street I had never heard of. The security guard let me in without asking questions—O'Brien had done his homework.

She was in a lab coat, standing in front of a piece of equipment that looked like a cross between a particle accelerator and a radio tower. She was thirty years old, blonde, with eyes that could cut glass.

'Detective Mercer,' she said. Not a question. A statement.

'Private eye,' I corrected her. 'And I'm not here as a detective. I'm here as a man who wants to know why three people are dying in ways that don't make sense.'

She smiled. It was not a kind smile. 'You think I did it.'

'I think nothing yet. But I'm getting curious.'

She turned back to the equipment. 'This is what they died for.'

I looked at what she was working on. A sphere of silver light, no larger than a marble, floating in the centre of the apparatus. It pulsed slowly, rhythmically. It was beautiful. It was terrifying.

'What is it?' I asked.

'A ball lightning. But not the weather phenomenon. This is something else. Something new.'

'Can it kill people?'

She looked at me. 'In the right conditions, yes.'

'Who are you working for?'

'The United States government.'

'Which department?'

She didn't answer. She didn't need to.

I left the laboratory with more questions than answers. But I had one name: Vera Cross. And I had one theory: the three men who died had stumbled onto something they weren't supposed to know about. And Vera Cross was protecting it.

I went back to my office and dug through old files. Manhattan Project records, declassified military reports, anything that mentioned ball lightning or atmospheric discharge. What I found made my blood run cold.

Eighteen years ago, the military had conducted a series of secret experiments in Southern California. The goal: weaponise ball lightning. The result: a catastrophic accident that killed two civilians—a man and his wife, both bystanders. The incident was covered up. The victims were listed as 'natural causes.'

The man's name was Jack Mercer. The woman was Eleanor Mercer.

My parents.

I sat in my office and stared at the file. The photographs showed a man and a woman standing in front of a house in Riverside. They were smiling. They looked happy. They had no idea that a government experiment three miles away was about to kill them.

I had always been told it was a freak accident. A random act of nature. But the file told a different story. They had been witnesses. They had seen something they weren't supposed to see. And the military had silenced them.

O'Brien had known. He had known when he hired me. He had known, and he had sent me into a trap.

I called O'Brien. He answered on the second ring.

'You knew,' I said.

'Yes.'

'My parents. You knew they were killed by your experiment.'

'Covered up, we called it. Natural causes. It was simpler that way.'

'Simpler for who?'

'For everyone. Your parents were in the wrong place at the wrong time. We tried to make it right by giving you a job.'

'A job to investigate the same people who killed them. So I would dig up the truth and bury it myself.'

'Essentially.'

I hung up. I sat in my office and I thought about what to do. I could go to the press. I could go to the FBI. But they were all connected. The military, the government, the covers-up. There was no justice in this city. Not for men like me.

I picked up my coat and my gun. Then I went to see Vera Cross one more time.

She was in the laboratory when I arrived. The silver sphere was floating in front of her, pulsing, beautiful, deadly.

'Detective,' she said. 'To what do I owe the pleasure?'

'I know about my parents,' I said.

Her expression did not change. 'I'm sorry.'

'Save it. Tell me about the sphere.'

She smiled. 'It's not a weapon, Jack. It's evolution. A new form of energy. A new way of seeing the world. Your parents saw it. That's why they had to die. But I'm going to make it right. I'm going to make it mean something.'

She activated the apparatus. The sphere grew, expanded, filled the laboratory with silver light. It was beautiful. It was terrible.

I walked out of the laboratory and into the Los Angeles rain. I knew the truth. I knew about my parents. I knew about Vera Cross. I knew about the sphere.

And I knew it wouldn't save me.

But truth, in this city, was never meant to save you. It was only meant to haunt you.

I walked into the rain and let it wash over my face. The silver arc was still out there, somewhere, waiting. And I would spend the rest of my life chasing it.

Not for justice. Justice doesn't exist in Los Angeles.

For the truth. And the truth is a dangerous thing to carry.
