The dead didn't make a sound. That was the first thing Jack Callahan noticed.

He was fourteen, living in a room above a noodle shop on Sunset Boulevard, and he had learned by experience that adults made a lot of noise. They snored. They argued. They cried. "Which is?"

"The shadow."

Jack didn't ask what he meant. He had learned, in fourteen years of living on the streets, that asking questions was a luxury he couldn't always afford. Sometimes you just had to follow the person who knew more than you and hope they didn't use you as a shield.

"What does that mean?"

"Who?"

The resources were running out. The wars were coming. I didn't kill the adults. I just accelerated the process. The adults were always going to destroy this world. I just gave the children a chance to build a new one."

Jack thought about this. He thought about the neon signs flickering in the rain. He thought about the children playing with guns in the streets. He thought about the Governor behind his door, trying to hold a world together with nothing but a smile and a suit that had belonged to his father.

"It didn't work," he said finally.

Dr. Whitmore smiled. It was a sad smile, but it was genuine. "No. It didn't. But that's not my problem anymore."

Jack left the house and walked down the hill to the city. The neon signs were flickering. The rain was falling. The streets were empty. He walked until he reached The Neon, and he went downstairs, and he sat at the bar, and he drank a beer that tasted like metal and regret.

The Governor found him there an hour later. He wore the same suit, but it was frayed at the edges now, and the cufflinks had tarnished to a dull grey.

"Did you find them?" he asked.

"Yes."

"And?"

Jack looked at him. Really looked at him. Beneath the suit and the authority and the practiced smile, he was just a boy. A boy who had been asked to carry the weight of a living civilization on shoulders that had never been meant for it.

"It doesn't matter," Jack said. "The shadow is us. It always was."

The Governor was quiet for a long time. Then he nodded, once, and walked away.

Jack finished his beer. He paid the bartender, a boy of twelve who had been a bartender before the adults died and who was still a bartender now because there was nothing else to do. He walked upstairs to his room above the noodle shop, and he lay down on his bed, and he closed his eyes, and he listened to the sound of the neon signs flickering.

They were the heartbeat of the city. And the heartbeat was getting weaker.
