The mountain air at eight thousand feet was thin and clean and smelled of pine resin and cold stone. Jack Moran liked it that way. After forty years in the NYPD and twenty years in this cabin, he had learned to appreciate things that were exactly what they seemed.

He was fifty-five, built like a fire hydrant—short, wide, and unlikely to move once planted. His left knee ached when it rained. His right shoulder carried a bullet wound from the Battle of Monte Cassino that made him curse in three languages when the weather turned. He drank black coffee, smoked unfiltered cigarettes, and had not spoken to another human being in eleven days.

The man appeared on a Thursday, which was significant because Jack did not believe in significant days. But this man—this broken, bleeding man—was as significant as a sledgehammer to the face.

Jack found him at the base of the rocky slope below his cabin, curled against a boulder like a dog that had been kicked too many times. The man was maybe twenty, gaunt, with a face that could have been handsome if it hadn't been beaten into something else. But it was his skin that made Jack stop.

It moved.

Not in the way skin moves when you breathe. It shifted—colors and patterns rippling across his arms and neck and face like oil on water. At one moment he was pale and yellow. The next, mottled brown and green. Then a deep, bruised purple.

"Jesus," Jack said.

The man's eyes opened. They were dark and terrified and brilliant. He tried to speak. What came out was a hiss—a sharp exhalation through teeth that were bared like a snake's.

Jack raised his hands. "Easy, kid. I ain't gonna hurt you."

The man's skin flickered—purple to grey to a sickly green. His breathing quickened. The colors on his arms swirled faster, like a television tuned to a dead channel.

Jack sat down on the rocks, twenty feet from the man, and lit a cigarette. He took a drag and exhaled slowly. Then he did the same thing again. And again. He made no sudden movements. He spoke in a low, flat voice, the way you talk to a spooked horse.

"My name's Jack. I live up there. Got a fire. Got food. Got a bed that doesn't suck quite as much as this rock." He nodded toward the cabin. "You can come or not. Your call."

The man stared at him. The colors on his skin slowed, settled into a sullen grey.

Jack stood up and walked toward the cabin. He did not look back. He heard the man's breathing behind him—fast, shallow, uncertain. Then he heard footsteps. Soft. Barefoot on stone. Following.

Jack called him Chameleon. Not to his face. Never to his face. But in his head, where names were just tools and this man needed one.

Chameleon didn't talk much. When he did, his voice was rough from disuse, each word like a stone dragged across concrete. He didn't tell Jack his name. Didn't tell Jack anything, really, except in fragments that came out like confessions at gunpoint.

He had run away from somewhere. Maybe an orphanage. Maybe a home. He didn't remember which. He knew he could do this—with his skin, with his colors, with the way his body responded to fear and anger and pain like a living camouflage suit. He had been using it to survive. To sneak into places. To steal food. To disappear.

"I'm not sick," he said on the third night, sitting by the fire, watching the flames eat the wood.

"I didn't say you was," Jack said.

"I'm not crazy."

"Didn't say that either."

"I'm not a monster."

Jack looked at him. The firelight caught the man's face—sharp cheekbones, dark eyes, skin that was currently a calm, steady blue. The color of a winter sky.

"Kid," Jack said, "if you're a monster, then so is everybody else. I just happen to know it."

Chameleon looked at the fire. He didn't answer. But his skin shifted—just for a second—from blue to something softer. A colour Jack couldn't name.

Weeks passed. The mountain held them in its cold arms. Chameleon learned to read from Jack's collection of detective novels and war memoirs. He learned to cook. He learned to shoot—a natural with a rifle, his hand steady, his breathing controlled, his colors settling into a pattern that matched the rocks and pine bark around them perfectly.

"You're a good shot," Jack said after Chameleon hit a tin can at two hundred yards.

"Survival," Chameleon said. "You learn to hit what you aim at, or you don't eat."

Jack nodded. He was thinking about something else.

The something else arrived on a Tuesday in what would have been October if calendars mattered on this mountain. It arrived in the form of a black Packard with North Carolina plates and a man named Victor Sterling stepping out of it like a man who owned the world.

Sterling was forty-five, well-dressed, well-groomed, and well-connected. He wore a charcoal suit that cost more than Jack's cabin. He smiled with his mouth but not his eyes.

"Mr. Moran," Sterling said, extending a hand that Jack did not take. "I own the Catskill Recreation Development Corporation. We're developing the recreation area on these mountains. I understand you may have some information that would be useful to us."

Jack stood on his porch, rifle across his lap, and said nothing.

Sterling's smile didn't waver. "Three tourists went missing last month. Hikers. They came to my mountain, Mr. Moran, and they didn't come back. My search teams found footprints leading toward your cabin. I'm asking you nicely: did you see anything?"

Jack took a drag of his cigarette. "I see a lot of things. Mostly squirrels. Sometimes a bear. Last week a fox with a broken leg that I put out of its misery."

Sterling's eyes flicked to the cabin door. Chameleon was standing in the doorway, half in shadow, his skin a careful, neutral grey. Sterling saw him. His smile tightened.

"And who is that?"

"No one," Jack said.

Sterling's face went very still. Then he laughed—a short, dry sound. "Mr. Moran, I'm not a fool. I've seen the news reports. 'Mountain monster.' 'Yeti sighting.' 'Strange creature spotted near cabin.' People are scared, Mr. Moran. Scared people don't visit my recreation area. My investors don't like scared people."

He stepped closer. "Here's what's going to happen. I'm going to hire a professional. A man named Frank. He's going to come up this mountain, and he's going to find whatever is living in your cabin. And he's going to deal with it. You can either stand aside and let him do his job, or you can get in his way. I'd advise against the latter."

Jack finished his cigarette. He crushed it under his boot. He looked at Sterling with eyes that had seen too much war and too much police work and too much of the worst of human nature.

"You can try," Jack said.

Sterling's smile finally died. He got back in his Packard and drove down the mountain.

Jack turned to Chameleon, who was standing in the doorway, his skin a turbulent storm of colours—red and black and white, shifting too fast, too angry.

"Kid," Jack said quietly, "you better hide."

Chameleon's skin went white. Then black. Then a colour that didn't have a name.

"I'm not hiding," he said. His voice was different. Harder. Colder. "Not this time."

"Toothless" Frank arrived two days later with a .38 Special, a map, and a look on his face that said he had done this before and didn't enjoy it but didn't mind it either.

Frank was a small man with big hands and a face like a clenched fist. He had been a enforcer for the Morello family in the 1930s, then a private eye in the 1940s, and now a man who solved problems for people who could pay him. Sterling had paid him well.

He found the cabin easily. The trail was fresh. He could see footprints—two sets. One large and heavy-booted. One smaller and barefoot.

He knocked on the door. No answer. He pushed it open.

The cabin was small. A kitchen area with a wood stove. A living area with a fireplace and two chairs. A doorway leading to what Jack had shown him was the bedroom.

Frank raised his .38 and moved into the cabin. He was a professional. He checked corners. He covered angles. He was careful.

He was also arrogant.

The back room was empty. Frank moved toward the bedroom doorway—and stopped.

Chameleon was sitting in a chair by the window, reading a book. He looked up as Frank entered. His skin was calm—a steady, almost peaceful blue.

"Evening," Chameleon said.

Frank's hand tightened on his gun. "You're the thing Sterling wants gone."

Chameleon closed the book. It was Moby-Dick. "I'm a person, actually."

"Persons don't change their skin like a lizard."

"Persons do a lot of things you don't expect."

Frank raised his gun. "Turn around. Slowly."

Chameleon didn't move. He looked at Frank with those dark, brilliant eyes, and something in Frank's gut tightened—a feeling he had known in the war, in the streets, in a hundred rooms like this one. The feeling that the game had changed.

"I wouldn't do that," Chameleon said.

Frank pulled the trigger.

The gun misfired. A click. No bang. Frank stared at the weapon, stunned, then looked up at Chameleon with pure rage.

He raised it again. This time it fired. The bullet grazed Chameleon's shoulder.

And Chameleon changed.

It happened fast—too fast for Frank to process. One moment there was a young man in a chair. The next, there was something else—something long and fast and covered in scales that shifted from blue to green to brown to a colour that seemed to absorb the light. The thing struck with the speed of a whip crack. Its tail—its tail wrapped around Frank's wrist and twisted. The gun flew across the room. The thing's body—twenty feet of muscle and scale and impossible colour—slammed into Frank's chest and sent him crashing into the wall.

Frank hit the stone and couldn't breathe. He lay there, gasping, staring up at the thing that had been a boy, its eyes yellow and intelligent and very, very angry.

Then Jack appeared in the doorway, a shotgun in his hands, pointed at Frank.

"Get out," Jack said. His voice was quiet. Calm. The calm of a man who has killed before and will kill again. "You take your car, you take your map, and you take your boss's money and you drive away. And if I ever see you on this mountain again, I will put twelve gauge buckshot through your kneecaps and leave you for the wolves."

Frank scrambled to his feet and ran. He ran down the mountain, through the trees, across the rocks, without stopping until he reached Sterling's Packard. He drove to New York without stopping. He never worked for Sterling again.

Jack went back to the cabin. Chameleon was sitting in the chair, human again, his shoulder bandaged with a clean shirt, his skin a tired, faded grey.

"You shot him?" Chameleon asked.

"No," Jack said. "He wasn't worth the bullets."

Chameleon nodded. He opened Moby-Dick to the page he had been reading. His hand was steady.

"Jack?"

"Yeah, kid?"

"Thank you."

Jack sat down in his chair. He picked up his coffee, which was cold, and drank it anyway. "Don't thank me. I did what needed doing."

But they both knew it was more than that. Jack had done what needed doing because Chameleon was not a thing. He was not a monster. He was not a problem to be solved. He was a person—a person who had trusted Jack with his most secret self, and Jack had not betrayed him.

In the world Jack knew, that was rarer than a man who could change his skin.

The truth came out three weeks later, in the form of a letter Chameleon delivered to the mountain post office. It was addressed to the New York Times. Jack wrote it; Chameleon delivered it. The letter contained photographs—Mary Beth DuBois's bayou photograph was not involved here, but Chameleon had taken his own, using Jack's camera. Photos of his cabin. Of the trap holes the recreation company had dug without permits. Of the contaminated stream they had poisoned with construction runoff. Of the three missing tourists, who had fallen into one of those unmarked trap holes and been rescued by Chameleon, who had bandaged their wounds and fed them and waited until search parties found them.

The story ran on the front page. "Catskill Recreation Development Corporation Violated Environmental Protection Laws." "Federal Investigation Launched into Tourist Disappearances." "Whistleblower Exposes Corporate Negligence."

Sterling's company stock plummeted. The FBI opened a corruption investigation. The trap holes were filled. The stream was cleaned.

And on the mountain, in a cabin that smelled of wood smoke and old books, a man who could change his skin sat by a fire and read Moby-Dick to a man who had taught him that some things—some people—are worth protecting, even when the world calls them monsters.

On the table beside him, the book lay open to a passage Jack had read aloud the night before:

"I know not all that is fair; but yet I know that notwithstanding men do condemn it as something inhuman and brutal, the truest wisdom is a kind of tenderness."

Chameleon turned the page. His skin was a calm, steady blue.

The colour of a winter sky.
