Sample V-07: The View from the Hallway
(The Story through Laura's Eyes)
My brother Julian is a very strange man. He is a great doctor, the kind of person who can fix a heart with a few precise movements of a knife, but he doesn't know how to talk to people. He spends most of his time staring at computer screens or pretending that he isn't looking at the nurse's station.
Then came Clara.
I first noticed her because Julian started acting like a glitching robot. He would walk into a room, see Clara, and suddenly forget how to use his legs. He would stand there, frozen, with this weird, soft look on his face that I had never seen before. It was like he had just seen a unicorn or a very expensive piece of art.
"Who is she?" I asked him one day.
Julian jumped, nearly knocking over a tray of instruments. "She's a colleague, Laura. Go back to your coloring book."
But I knew. I saw the way he looked at her when she wasn't looking. I saw the way he would "accidentally" be in the same hallway as her every single morning at 8:15. I even saw him spend twenty minutes trying to figure out how to offer her a cup of water without sounding like he was reciting a medical textbook.
My favorite part was the Umbrella Incident. It was raining—really hard, the kind of rain that makes the city look like a watercolor painting. Julian had this big, black umbrella. He walked up to Clara, and for a second, I thought he was actually going to say something normal. Instead, he just held the umbrella over her head and looked at his shoes.
"You're getting wet," he said.
"I like the rain," she replied.
"Well, I don't like you getting a cold," he muttered.
They walked together for five minutes. From my spot by the window, they looked like two penguins huddling together for warmth. It was the most romantic thing I had ever seen, mostly because it was so awkward.
Later, I found Julian in his office, staring at his phone with a look of intense concentration. He had finally gotten her number. He didn't save it as "Clara"; he saved it as "C. (Do Not Call Unless Emergency)".
I laughed. My brother is a genius at surgery, but he is a complete idiot at love. Still, when he thinks I'm not looking, he smiles at his phone. And I think, maybe the robot is finally starting to feel something.
