The Witness on Maple Street

The thing about Maple Street was that everybody knew everybody's business and nobody said anything about it. Not out loud, anyway. If you wanted to know whether the new girl on the corner had a boyfriend, or whether the man at number forty-two was drinking again, you didn't have to ask. You just knew. Knowledge in a suburb like that didn't travel like information; it travelled like a fungus—invisible threads spreading through the dark.

I started working for the Whitmores in September, the month the leaves began to change and the air got that particular sharpness that told you the city was coming. I was nineteen, from Philadelphia, and I needed the work. Mrs. Whitmore had advertised for a live-in maid in the newspaper, and I took the bus to Long Island with two suitcases and a reference letter from a woman who owned a diner on Spring Garden Street.

The house was big—a Georgian colonial with white columns and a wraparound porch that looked like something from a magazine. Inside, it was all dark wood and heavy curtains and the kind of furniture you don't sit on because it might lose its shape. Mrs. Whitmore was a thin woman with a sharp face and a sharper voice. She hired me on the spot, showed me to a room off the kitchen—small, windowless, smelling faintly of mildew—and told me to begin the next morning at six.

But before I began, I needed to meet the rest of the family.

Clara was the first person I saw, and I'll admit—I wasn't expecting what I got. She was twenty-four, I guessed, and she was standing at the kitchen sink washing dishes by hand, even though the house had a dishwasher that nobody had ever used. Her dress was simple—blue cotton, faded—and her hair was pulled back in a loose knot that was already coming undone. She looked up when I came in, and her face—

I should say something about her face. Not that it was beautiful, exactly. It was the kind of face that you notice because of its unusual quality of stillness. She was pretty, yes, but it was the stillness that drew you in. Like a lake on a windless day.

"You must be Beatrice," she said. Her voice was low and even, with no inflection I could detect.

"Yes, ma'am."

"I'm Clara."

"I figured."

Mrs. Whitmore came into the kitchen then, and the atmosphere changed instantly. Clara's stillness deepened into something I recognized—though I didn't have a name for it until much later. Dissociation. That was the word the social worker at the youth home had used, back when I was in foster care and couldn't talk about what happened to me. Dissociation: the act of mentally removing yourself from a situation your body can't escape.

Over the next few weeks, I learned the pattern of Clara's life. She rose at four-thirty, before me, and was in the kitchen by five, making coffee and preparing breakfast for the Whitmore family. Mr. Whitmore was a stockbroker—gone before six, back after nine, drunk most of the time he was home. Mrs. Whitmore ran the house with the precision of a military campaign. And Clara was the soldier on the front lines, taking the artillery fire every single day.

It started small. A sharp word about the toast being too dark. A complaint that the coffee was too strong. Then it escalated. Clara was moved from her bedroom—the small room off the living room that Mrs. Whitmore had promised her—to the attic, a stuffy space with a sloping ceiling and a single window that opened onto the neighbour's backyard. Her good dress was taken away and replaced with the same blue cotton she was already wearing. She was assigned every chore in the house, doubled and tripled. If a task was not done to Mrs. Whitmore's exacting standard, the punishment was physical: a slap, a shove, the occasional object thrown with sufficient force to bruise.

The scar happened on a Thursday in November. I was cleaning the basement—the furnace room, the storage area—and I heard a scream from upstairs. It was sharp and sudden, like a bird taking flight. I ran up the stairs and stopped in the hallway, frozen.

The front door was open. Mr. Whitmore stood in the doorway, his face red and wet with sweat, holding a pair of metal tongs that glowed orange at the tips. He looked at me, looked past me, and then turned and walked inside, closing the door behind him.

Clara was in the kitchen, standing at the sink, her hand pressed against her left cheek. Blood ran from between her fingers and dripped onto the tile floor. She was not crying. She was not making any sound at all.

I wanted to help. God help me, I wanted to help. But I was a live-in maid from Philadelphia, and Clara was the daughter-in-law of a man who sat on the board of the country club and donated to the church and hosted the mayor for dinner on Sundays. If I spoke, I would be fired. If I was fired, I would be back on Spring Garden Street with two suitcases and a reference that meant nothing.

So I did what I always did in situations that demanded action: I picked up a cloth, I wiped the floor, and I said nothing.

Clara looked at me then. Her eyes were dry and clear and full of something I couldn't read. Not anger—not exactly. Not grief—though there was grief there too. Something else. Something that would have taken me years to name.

Acceptance, I thought. She has accepted the unacceptability of her situation and made peace with it.

It was the most frightening thing I had ever seen.

In the days that followed, Clara's face was bandaged. Mrs. Whitmore ordered her to stay in the attic and not come down until the wound had "closed up properly." Which, I understood, meant: until it looked presentable enough to be seen in public.

But Clara didn't stay in the attic. She came down at night, after everyone had gone to bed, and she did her work in the dark—silently, efficiently, without lighting a single lamp. I would sometimes see her moving through the house like a ghost, a shadow against the wallpaper, and I would stand in my room with my door cracked open and listen to her footsteps on the stairs, soft as snow falling.

The first time I saw her without the bandages, it was Christmas Eve. The Whitmore family had gone to church, and I was cleaning the kitchen after the turkey had been carved and eaten and the guests had gone home. I came back from the pantry and stopped dead.

Clara was standing at the sink, looking at her reflection in the window. The scar was still there—a thin white line running from her hairline to her jaw—but it had faded significantly. The skin around it was pink and fresh, and her overall complexion had a glow to it that I had not seen before. She looked different—not younger, not older, but present. Like someone who had been watching a play from the back of the theatre and had suddenly walked down to the front row.

I said nothing. Neither did she. We stood there in the kitchen, on Christmas Eve, two women who knew exactly what had happened to each other and neither of us saying a word. It was, I think, the most honest conversation we ever had.

The old woman appeared on a Tuesday in January. Clara saw her on the bus going into Manhattan—she'd taken a rare afternoon off, something Mrs. Whitmore had never permitted but had somehow, inexplicably, allowed. The woman was sitting in the back of the bus, shivering, her coat too thin for the weather. Clara sat next to her and took off her own wool coat and draped it over the woman's lap.

That was all. A coat. Nothing more.

But it was enough.

The woman was a retired pharmacist named Mrs. Gable, and she gave Clara a small tube of ointment—her own formulation, made from herbs and beeswax and something else that Clara didn't ask about. "Apply it nightly," Mrs. Gable said. "And don't let anybody tell you that you're anything less than what you are."

Clara applied it every night. Over the next three months, her skin transformed. Not magically—gradually. The scar became a line, the line became a shadow, the shadow became almost invisible. And beneath it, her skin was clear and even and alive in a way it hadn't been in years.

The Whitmores noticed, of course. They noticed everything. Mrs. Whitmore confronted her in the kitchen, her voice tight with a mixture of fury and something else—jealousy?—and Clara told her about Mrs. Gable and the ointment and the bus.

Mrs. Whitmore went to find Mrs. Gable. She never did. Mrs. Gable had moved on—south, I suspect, or possibly west. The bus driver said he'd seen her a few times, always sitting in the back, always shivering, always wearing someone else's coat.

The Whitmores' financial troubles came to light in the spring. Mr. Whitmore had been margin-trading on the stock exchange, and when the market turned, he turned with it. Fast. The house was foreclosed in May. The family left in a single day, packing suitcases with the frantic energy of people who know they're running from something but aren't sure where they're going.

I found a letter in Clara's old room—she'd left before them, packed and gone in the night—tucked under a floorboard near the bed. She'd left it for me, I think. A note, two sentences:

I'm leaving. Not because I forgive them. Because I don't need to stay anymore. If you ever need a reference, ask the woman at the diner on Spring Garden Street. She'll tell you I'm honest.

I read that note three times, then I put it in my pocket and went back to cleaning. The house was empty now, silent, waiting for the next family to move in and make it theirs. I walked to the bus stop, got on the number 42, and rode it back to the city.

I still work at the diner. Clara writes sometimes—once a year, usually on Christmas Eve. Her letters are short, typed on thin paper, with no return address. The last one said she was in Chicago, working in a sewing factory, and that the sky there was grey and she liked it.

I don't know if Clara is happy. I don't know if she is unhappy. I only know what I saw: a woman standing in a kitchen on Christmas Eve, looking at her reflection, and deciding that she was worth looking at.

That's all any of us can do, really. Stand in the kitchen. Look at ourselves in the window. And decide that we're worth seeing.
