Shadow Evidence

The rain in Los Angeles doesn't wash anything clean. It just makes the grime slicker.

I was sitting at the bar on Sunset, nursing a bourbon that cost more than it was worth, when she walked in. Violet Moreau. Twenty-four years old, former child actress, current whatever-the-hell you call a woman who lets a man take pictures of her in compromising positions.

I'd been investigating Drake Studios for three months. Corruption, blackmail, the usual Hollywood dirt. I hadn't expected to find a girl who looked like she'd been hollowed out and filled with smoke.

She sat two stools down from me. Ordered a martini. Didn't look at me. But I could feel her tension like a live wire.

"You're the reporter," she said. Not a question.

"I'm whoever I need to be."

She turned to look at me then. Her eyes were the color of old whiskey—brown, but with something darker underneath. "My name's Violet. And I need your help."

"Everybody needs something."

"Not everybody needs to be destroyed."

Drake's empire was built on smiles and shadows. On the surface, he was Hollywood's golden boy—charming, generous, always willing to take a chance on a newcomer. Beneath the surface, he was a spider who had woven his web through every important room in Los Angeles.

The photographs were his currency. Not just of Violet—of senators, judges, priests, businessmen. Men who thought their secrets were safe in a locked safe behind a painting. Men who were about to learn that nothing is safe in a city that runs on images.

Violet told me her story over coffee the next day. She had been an actress, promising and pretty, until Drake offered her a "break" that came with conditions. Private photos. Then favors. Then things that had names but no words I wanted to speak aloud.

"He says he's protecting me," Violet said, stirring her coffee without drinking it. "He says if I tell anyone, he'll release the photos and I'll never work in this town again. Maybe ever."

"And do you believe him?"

"I believe he's done worse."

I should have walked away. I'd seen this before—women using me as a weapon against men who deserved it, then expecting me to be their knight. But Violet was different. She wasn't asking for rescue. She was asking for partnership. And in my experience, partnerships are the most dangerous kind.

Over the next two weeks, I dug into Drake's operation. What I found made my stomach turn. He wasn't just blackmailing men—he was orchestrating their downfall. He'd create the compromising situation, take the photograph, then collect. It was a racket, pure and simple, dressed up in tuxedos and gowns.

But here's the thing about rackets: they only work when everyone plays their part. And Violet wasn't sure she was playing the part of victim.

"There are things I've done," she told me one night in my apartment. The rain was falling again, drumming against the window like someone trying to get in. "Things I did because he told me to. Things I did because I wanted to."

"What kind of things?"

She looked at me over the rim of her glass. "Does it matter?"

The night of the Drake Gala, the Beverly Hills Hotel was dripping with gold and lies. Everyone who mattered was there, wearing their best faces and their worst secrets. I stood in the shadows near the bar, watching Violet move through the crowd like a ghost in a red dress.

She was beautiful. Not in the way magazine covers are beautiful—in the way a car crash is beautiful. The kind of beauty that makes you look away and look again.

Drake was holding court near the stage, laughing at something a senator had said, his hand resting on the senator's shoulder like a man who owned the world. I'd seen that hand before. It had held a camera. It had held Violet's wrist. It had held a lot of things it shouldn't have.

When Violet took the stage to perform—a spoken word piece she'd written, about a girl who sold her shadow and couldn't buy it back—the room went quiet. Drake's smile didn't waver, but I saw his eyes. They were calculating, assessing, deciding whether this was a problem he could solve.

Violet spoke for ten minutes. She didn't mention Drake by name. She didn't have to. Every word was a needle, and every needle found its target. When she finished, the applause was polite and nervous. Drake was already on his feet, moving toward her.

I moved the other way. Toward the evidence I'd gathered—photographs, documents, bank records. The kind of stuff that could bring a man like Drake down. I had it all in a manila envelope, tucked inside my jacket.

I made it to the parking lot before Drake's men found me.

They didn't ask questions. They just took the envelope and broke my ribs. Three of them. On the right side. The ones that hurt when you breathe.

When I woke up in an alley behind a Chinese restaurant, I could taste blood and rain and regret.

Violet called me a week later. Her voice was different—flatter, emptier, like someone had turned down the volume on her soul.

"I gave it back," she said.

"The envelope?"

"Everything. The photos, the documents, the records. All of it."

"Why?"

"Because he showed me the ones of my mother." My stomach tightened. "He said if I didn't cooperate, he'd release them and everyone would know what kind of woman she was. What kind of woman I come from."

"What kind of woman was she?"

Violet was silent for a long time. "The kind who makes mistakes. The kind that her daughter has to live with."

I wanted to hang up. I wanted to scream. I wanted to ask her why she was calling me if she wasn't going to let me help. Instead, I said nothing.

"I'm leaving town," she said finally. "I don't know where I'm going. I just know I can't stay."

"Violet—"

"Don't. Just don't. You're a good man, Jack. But good men don't win in this city. They just die slower."

She hung up.

I sat in my apartment and drank whiskey until the walls stopped spinning. Then I picked up the newspaper the next morning and turned to the society page. There was Drake, smiling, shaking hands, announcing a new production that would "change the face of Hollywood forever."

No mention of the scandal. No mention of the investigation. No mention of me, lying in an alley with broken ribs and a broken sense of justice.

I poured another drink and looked at my reflection in the window. The man staring back looked tired. Older. The kind of man who knows that truth is just another word for something you can't prove.

Outside, the rain started again. It always rains in Los Angeles. It never washes anything clean.
