I am not a good man. I know this. I have always known this. From the moment I understood what I was doing—what I was willing to do—I knew. And still I did it. Still I would do it again, if the choice came back to me, because choice is a luxury that men like me are rarely given.
My name is Paddy O'Connor. I was born in County Mayo, Ireland, in a cabin that leaned to the left and smelled of peat smoke and wet earth, and I grew up hungry—not the kind of hungry where your stomach grumbles, but the kind of hungry where your bones ache and your vision goes dark and your mother looks at your siblings and her eyes fill with a terror so deep she cannot speak it.

And beside it—crouched on the ground like a child hiding from a storm—was a girl.
She was young, maybe twelve, with skin the color of dark honey and hair that was black and thick and braided in the style of the plains Indians, though she was not Indian. I dreamed of her in the cabin, in the blanket that was more hole than wool, whispering my name. And I woke up with tears on my face, and Elk-Eye was looking at me, and she did not say anything. She simply reached out and touched my hand, and her hand was warm, and I stopped crying.

I had to leave. There was a man in Charleston—Henry Vanderbilt, a steel magnate, a man who had more money than God and less sense than a dog—who had heard rumors. And I did it anyway.
I organized the expedition. I found four men—farmers from the valley, men who were tired of farming and tired of being poor and willing to follow anyone who promised them money. I led them through the mountains, through rain and mud and darkness, to the cave beneath the great cypress tree.
Elk-Eye saw us coming. She stood at the entrance of the cave and raised her arms and shouted in Cree, a language that sounded like wind through grass and water over stone, and the serpent rose to his full height and his rattle—his deep, vibrating rattle—filled the cavern with a sound that I felt in my teeth and my bones and the place inside me where I kept Bridget.
"Don't," Elk-Eye said to me. Her voice was calm. Calmer than I had ever heard it. "Paddy, please don't."
I looked at her. I looked at the serpent. And I looked away.
That is the thing I carry. Not the money. Not the shame. The looking away.

Dr. Moreau did not want to kill him, technically. He wanted to capture him alive. But the snake would not come out of the cave, and the men were impatient, and the sun was setting, and Dr. Moreau had a train to catch in Asheville, and so he gave the order: blow the entrance open.
The explosion threw me backward into the dirt. I heard Elk-Eye scream—a sound I have never heard before and pray to God I never hear again. The cave shook. Dust fell from the ceiling. The serpent's rattle stopped.
When the dust settled, I crawled into the cave.
The serpent was dead. A fragment of dynamite had pierced his body, and the amber fluid—Le Sang du Marais, the Blood of the Swamp, the thing that Vanderbilt's daughter needed, the thing that Elk-Eye's people had guarded for centuries—was pouring from the wound and pooling on the stone floor and glowing faintly, like embers in a dying fire.
Elk-Eye was on her knees beside him, her hands pressed to the wound, her golden-brown eyes closed, her mouth moving in a prayer I could not hear.
I stood in the entrance and watched, and I did nothing.
That is what I carry. Not the money. Not the shame. The not doing anything.

He packed them in straw and put them in a wooden crate and strapped the crate to his horse and rode to Asheville and caught his train and rode to Charleston and went to Vanderbilt's house and gave the vials to Vanderbilt's butler and said: "Tell your master this will cure his daughter."
It did not cure her.
The Blood worked—for one day. Vanderbilt's daughter sat up in bed and asked for breakfast and ate half a bowl of oatmeal and smiled at her father and said his name in a voice that had been weak for months and was now strong.
And then she got worse. Faster than before. The Blood had given her strength. But it had not given her life.
On the third day, she was dead.
Vanderbilt killed Dr. Moreau. Not directly—he did not put a gun to his head or pour poison in his cup. He simply sued him. For malpractice. For fraud. For everything. And Moreau, who had no money and no reputation and no friends, lost everything. He moved to Mexico and disappeared into a city that smelled of chili and dust and sin and died there ten years later, forgotten and alone.
Vanderbilt's daughter was buried in a cemetery in Pittsburgh, and her father never spoke her name again, and I hear he died twenty years later, rich and alone and staring at a wall.
Elk-Eye—Elk-Eye went back to the cave.

The cavern was empty. The stone platform was cracked. The pool was dry. And on the floor, in the place where the serpent had slept, was a single scale. A single diamondback scale, the color of wet earth and dried blood, lying on the stone like a piece of something that had been real and had been destroyed and had been replaced by nothing.
I picked it up. It was warm.
I put it in my pocket. I still have it. It is the only thing I have left from that day.
