Midnight Crossroads

The rain in Los Angeles does not wash things clean. It makes the grime slicker, the neon bleed further, the puddles reflect things they should not. Victoria Vale knew this because she had driven through every puddle on every street in this city for twenty-four years, and nothing had ever been washed clean.

Her father's apartment was on the fourth floor of a building that had once been a hotel. The police had already been through it — yellow tape across the door, a uniformed officer who looked at her with the practiced sympathy of someone who had done this too many times.

"Hit-and-run on Sunset," he said, reading the look on her face. "We caught the driver. He said he did not see her. Said it was raining, the street was dark, he panicked."

"Did he stop?"

"No. He kept going."

Victoria nodded. She was not supposed to be here. The apartment was evidence. But evidence does not care about procedure, and Victoria Vale did not care about evidence.

Inside, the apartment was exactly what she expected from a fifty-four-year-old city planner who worked for a salary that barely covered rent: two rooms, a kitchen that smelled like old coffee, shelves of urban planning books that had not been touched in years, and a desk that had been turned inside out by the police looking for something that did not exist.

Victoria did not look for what did not exist. She looked for what was hidden.

Her father had a habit of hiding things in plain sight. Books were his favorites — a hollowed-out copy of City Planning in America, a false bottom in a drawer marked Receipts, a note tucked inside a library card for a book about traffic engineering. She found three things tonight: a receipt from a restaurant called The Blue Whale, a key to a storage unit, and a map of Los Angeles with five locations marked in red ink.

The Blue Whale was a waterfront diner on Sunset, open from midnight to four in the morning, serving coffee and bad decisions. Victoria went there at 1:47 AM, because the truth in Los Angeles did not reveal itself between nine and five.

The diner was half-full. A couple in their forties argued silently over corner booths. A man in a police uniform ate pie and ignored everything. And in the back, by the kitchen door, sat a man who looked like he had just decided to leave Los Angeles and had not quite made up his mind.

He was wearing a dark suit, the kind that costs more than most people in this diner make in a week, but he wore it like armor rather than decoration. Dark hair, sharp features, an expression that suggested he had seen something terrible and was still processing it. A scar ran along his jawline, pale against the olive skin.

Victoria sat at the counter. Ordered coffee. Watched him in the reflection of the mirror behind the bar.

When she finally turned around, he was standing at the next stool. Two seats apart. Close enough to talk. Far enough apart to matter.

"You are Victoria Vale," he said.

"Who asked you to look for me?"

"No one. I was looking for someone who fits your description. My client gave me your name."

"Your client."

"Someone who thinks you might need help. Someone who knows about the hit-and-run."

Victoria stared at him. "My father's death is not a puzzle you can solve for money."

"Nobody said it was about money." He slid onto the stool. Up close, she could see that his eyes were not just dark — they were the color of the ocean at midnight, impossible to read and equally impossible to look away from. "My name is Cole Hartigan. I run a legitimate import-export business on Santa Monica Boulevard. And I think your father was murdered."

The coffee arrived. Victoria did not drink it. She held the mug with both hands and let the warmth seep into her fingers.

"Five people," she said. "Five names on my father's map. I have been to three of them. The first was a corrupt LAPD detective named Malone — he knew about a land deal my father was investigating and told him to back off. The second was a man named Sal Moretti, who has connections to the port authority and the underground. The third was a city councilman named Whitfield, who was supposed to meet my father the night he died. Whitfield did not show up."

Cole was listening with the kind of attention that made Victoria feel like she was the most important person in the room. It was a dangerous skill.

"Three more names," he said.

"Four. The map has four more locations. But one of them is my father's house, which I have already checked."

Cole picked up his coffee. Took a sip. Set it down. "Let me drive you to the next one."

"Why?"

"Because I know this city. And because I know what happens to people who ask the wrong questions in the right places."

They drove through the rain-slicked streets of Los Angeles in silence, Cole's car a black sedan that moved through the traffic like a shadow. The fourth location was a building in downtown LA that had once been a bank and was now a shell company's registered office. Cole parked three blocks away.

"Stay in the car," he said.

"I do not take orders from men I just met."

He looked at her. The streetlight outside cut across his face, making the scar stand out. "Then stay in the car because I am asking you to. There is a difference."

Victoria stayed in the car. Cole went inside and came out ten minutes later with a folder.

"Land deal records," he said, handing it over as they drove. "Your father filed a formal objection to a Harbor Land Group project. Six hundred families displaced. The project was approved three days before he died. The city councilman who approved it was Whitfield."

"And you know Harbor Land Group how?"

Cole was quiet for a long stretch of the road. The rain drummed on the windshield. Somewhere behind them, a siren wailed and faded.

"My uncle runs Harbor's security division," he said finally. "Legally. I do not know what else he does. But I know that if your father's objection had gone through, it would have killed the project. And if the project died, Harbor would have lost twelve million dollars."

Victoria stared at the folder. "So someone killed him to protect twelve million dollars."

"Someone killed him to protect something. The twelve million was just the part my father found first."

The fifth location was a beachside mansion in Santa Monica. Cole drove them there at 3:30 AM, when the only light came from the moon and the streetlamps, and the ocean was a dark presence you could feel even when you could not see it.

"This is Chief Malone's house," Cole said, killing the engine. "He lives here. Or visits here. I am not sure which."

Victoria watched the mansion through the rain-streaked windshield. "We need to get in."

"That is a terrible idea."

"I have been told."

Cole started the car again. Pulled into the driveway. The mansion loomed ahead, white columns and palm trees and a driveway long enough to land a plane on.

"Three stops on this route," Cole said, pulling out his phone. "The diner, the bank, the mansion. You have visited all five locations on the map. But the fifth is not a person. It is a place. And I think it is where your father was going the night he died."

Victoria opened the car door. The rain hit her face like ice water. "Then let us find out what he found."

Cole caught her wrist. His grip was firm, warm, urgent. "Victoria. If we do this, there is no going back. The people we are looking for do not care about consequences."

She looked at his hand on her wrist. Looked up at his face. In the darkness, he looked both dangerous and vulnerable, which was an impossible combination until you saw it in person.

"I am not looking for consequences," she said. "I am looking for the truth. And the truth does not care about consequences either."

He released her wrist. Nodded. Got out of the car.

They moved around the side of the mansion, through the garden, to a window that was slightly ajar. Cole lifted Victoria up — she weighed nothing, she knew he knew this — and she slipped through the window into a study that smelled like old leather and expensive whiskey.

The desk was empty except for a single file folder, centered precisely in the middle, as if placed there for her.

She opened it. Inside was a photograph: her father, alive, standing next to Cole's uncle, shaking hands. Dated two weeks before he died.

On the back, in her father's handwriting: they know I know.

Victoria's hands did not shake. But her throat tightened. Cole was standing behind her in the window, the rain still falling, the ocean still roaring.

"Your father was not just investigating a land deal," Cole said quietly. "He was investigating my family."

The file had four more pages. Each one contained the name of a corrupt official. Each one contained a payment trail. Each one contained evidence that could destroy Harbor Land Group and everyone connected to it.

Victoria took the pages. Put them in her coat pocket. Closed the file.

"Six stops," she said, climbing back through the window. "Six stops on the route from the truth to the people who want to kill for it."

Cole caught her hand as she climbed down. Held it longer than necessary.

"Victoria," he said. "Whatever happens next — whatever they do to us — I need you to know something."

"What?"

"I have spent my entire life being someone I am not. Nephew of a criminal. Owner of a legitimate business built on illegitimate money. I have been pretending to be clean for twenty-eight years. You — you are the first person who has looked at me and seen something worth protecting."

The rain had stopped. The ocean was still roaring. Somewhere in the mansion, a floorboard creaked.

"Then protect me," she said.

And Cole Hartigan, who had never protected anyone in his life, did the most dangerous thing he had ever done: he meant it.
