She left as she had come, a storm of silk and indignation, and Reginald sat alone in the quiet office and felt the headache deepen into something harder, something crystalline, a lattice of tension forming behind his eyes.

"They worked twelve-hour shifts in hundred-degree heat beside furnaces that have no pity and railways that have no mercy. They died doing work that men like you could not do for five minutes without soiling your silk waistcoats. You will speak of them with respect, or you will speak of them not at all."

He left the dining room. Behind him, there was silence.

That was the moment, though he did not know it, when the crystalline structure of Reginald Ashworth's character reached its critical temperature. The pressure had been building for forty-seven years — the blows, the losses, the calculations, the endless and exhausting arithmetic of survival. The fracture had begun, and now it spread, and the man who had been Reginald Ashworth was about to become something else.

He was still Reginald Ashworth. He would always be Reginald Ashworth. But the temperature at which men melt had been reached, and he had not melted. He had crystallized. He had become something new.

And somewhere in Pittsburgh, in the glow of the furnaces, in the heat that took men's lives and turned them into ledgers and percentages and quarterly reports, the work went on. The rails were poured. The trains ran. The empire endured. And the man at its center was no longer a man who could look at death and see only numbers. He was a man who had learned, too late and at terrible cost, that the arithmetic of survival was not arithmetic at all.

It was the measure of a soul.
