Double Blind
The rain in Los Angeles doesn't wash anything clean. It just makes the grime slicker.
I sat in my office on Flower Street, watching the water carve paths through the dust on my windowpane, and wondered if I was getting paid enough for this particular brand of foolish. The answer, as always, was no. Rent was due in four days and the client who'd hired me to find a missing woman had paid me five hundred dollars upfront — which was more than usual and less than I would have charged if I'd been charging myself.
The client was a man named Harrington. Old money — or money that wanted to pretend it was old money. He wore suits that cost more than my car and a smile that cost less. He sat across from me, hands folded on his knees, and told me to find a woman. Just a woman. No name. No description. Just: Find her. She's important.
I'd been a Army nurse for three years — four if you count the year I spent trying to forget what I'd seen in the hospitals near Verdun. Three years of cutting bullets out of boys who couldn't have been older than my brother. Three years of holding hands while men bled to death because the medics were busy with the ones who stood a chance. I came back from the war with steady hands and an empty heart. The hands were useful. The heart wasn't.
"Five hundred is a lot of money, Mr. Harrington," I said, lighting a cigarette because the radiator was broken and I needed something to do with my hands.
"I know."
"The job's vague."
"I know."
"Then why me?"
Harrington's smile didn't waver. "Because you're discreet. And because I was told you're the kind of woman who doesn't ask too many questions."
I should have walked out. But rent was due, and numbness was expensive, and five hundred dollars was the difference between eating and not eating for a month. So I took the money. I always took the money. It was the only honest thing about me.
The trail led me to a man named Victor Lane. I found him in a bar off Broadway — not the theatre district Broadway, the other one, where the neon bled into puddles and the jazz was bad but the whiskey was decent. He was sitting alone, nursing a drink he wasn't drinking, and watching the door like a man who expected someone to walk through it.
I sat down next to him and ordered a beer I wasn't going to finish. "Mr. Lane?"
He turned. His face was handsome in a way that made you look twice — sharp cheekbones, dark eyes, a mouth that looked like it had been carved by someone who understood symmetry but not kindness. "Ms. Corbin?"
"Eve."
"Eve." He said it like he was testing the weight of it. "What can I do for you?"
"I'm looking for a woman. Anonymous client. Five hundred dollars upfront. You know anything about that?"
Victor's expression didn't change. But something behind his eyes did — a flicker, a shadow, a door opening and closing so fast I might have imagined it. "No idea."
"Then why did your hands just go white?"
He looked down at his hands. They were, indeed, white-knuckled around the glass. He relaxed them slowly, deliberately, like a man convincing himself he was in control of a situation where he plainly was not.
"I don't know what you mean."
"That's the second time you've said that. I'm starting to think it's your favorite phrase."
Victor set down his glass. The ice clinked against the rim — a small, precise sound in a bar full of loud people trying not to think. "Who are you really looking for, Miss Corbin?"
"I told you. A woman."
"Not just any woman. Someone specific. Someone your client cares about enough to pay you five hundred dollars to find." Victor leaned closer, and I caught the scent of him — expensive cologne mixed with something sharper, something like fear. "Maybe you should ask yourself why."
I should have walked out. Instead, I leaned closer too. "Maybe you should ask yourself why you're telling me to ask myself questions."
Victor's mouth twitched. Not a smile. Something close to it, but not quite — more like a ghost of a smile, a memory of amusement, the echo of a reaction that belonged to someone else.
And then it happened.
His posture changed. Just slightly. His shoulders relaxed. His head tilted. And when he spoke again, the voice was different — lower, smoother, edged with something that was not Victor's.
"Don't trust her," the voice said. "She'll use you. She's already using you."
I stared at him. I'd seen shell shock. I'd seen epilepsy. I'd seen conversion disorder — women who went blind when they saw something they couldn't bear to look at. But this was different. This was a man sitting in a bar, and his body had become someone else's.
"Who are you?" I asked quietly.
The thing wearing Victor's face smiled — a small, dangerous smile. "I'm Summer. And I'm the woman your client is looking for."
The name meant nothing to me. But the certainty in the voice meant everything.
"Summer," I repeated. "You're a woman. Inside him."
"I'm his other half. His shadow. His conscience, given a female face because he couldn't handle having one himself." Summer's eyes — Victor's eyes — held mine with an intensity that was equal parts challenge and invitation. "I'm the part of him that remembers things he wants to forget. The part of him that does what he's too polite to refuse and too cowardly to stop."
"What do you want from me?"
Summer leaned back in the chair and studied me the way a cat studies a bird — with amusement and a hint of hunger. "I want you to stop pretending you're doing this job for money. You're here because you're bored. Because you've numbed yourself so completely that even the darkness isn't interesting anymore. You need a puzzle, Miss Corbin. And I am the most interesting puzzle you've ever encountered."
I should have been offended. I was not. She was right. I was bored. I was so bored that I had started taking jobs I didn't need from clients I didn't trust, just to have something to do with my hands between drinking and sleeping and waking up and doing it again.
"What's the puzzle?" I asked.
Summer's smile widened — just slightly. "Your missing woman isn't missing. She's inside him. She's always been inside him. And your client — Mr. Harrington — is not trying to find her. He's trying to erase her."
The pieces clicked together with the satisfying precision of a gun locking into place. Harrington. Old money. A client who paid too much for vague jobs. A man named Victor Lane who hosted a woman named Summer in his head. An employer who didn't want to find her but wanted her gone.
"Who is Harrington to you?" I asked.
Summer's expression darkened — just for a moment. Then it was gone, and Victor was back, sitting in the bar, looking at me with eyes that were entirely his own and entirely terrified.
"My family," he said, and his voice was Tom's voice, rough with fear. "My family hired Harrington to find someone who could perform a procedure. An electrical treatment. They say it's medical. It's not. It's an execution. They want Summer gone. And when Summer is gone, I'll be empty enough to sign over the family business. And when that happens, Harrington gets his cut, and my relatives get what they want, and Summer —" He stopped. Swallowed. "Summer ceases to exist."
"Has this happened before?"
"Once. Years ago. When I was twelve. They brought a doctor — a quack, really — and he shocked the personality out of me. It worked. Summer was gone for eight years. Until the war. Until I needed her. Until the things I saw in France became too much for one man to carry, and Summer came back because she had to, because she was the only part of me strong enough to hold the memory without breaking."
"And now they're going to try again?"
"Yes."
"Can you stop them?"
Victor looked at me, and in his eyes I saw something I hadn't seen since before the war — something honest and raw and terrifyingly human. "No."
I finished my beer. It was warm and bitter and exactly what I needed. "Then we have a problem."
"We do."
"Because if they succeed, Summer dies."
"Yes."
"And if Summer dies, you become — what? A shell? A hollow man who can't remember who he was before or who he might have been after?"
"Yes."
I stood up. I dropped a five-dollar bill on the bar. I looked at Victor — at Summer, who was watching me from behind Victor's face with eyes that were both his and not his and entirely her own.
"I'm not going to let them do it," I said. And I meant it. Not because I cared about Summer or Victor or even myself. But because in a city built on lies, in a job built on betrayal, in a life built on the systematic elimination of feeling — sometimes the only honest thing you could do was stand up and say: No. Not this one. Not this ghost. Not this woman who exists inside a man's head and is more real than half the people walking these streets.
Victor — Summer — looked at me with something that might have been gratitude or might have been disbelief or might have been the first flicker of an emotion I had not seen in him since I'd met him.
"Why?" he asked.
I pulled on my coat. I lit another cigarette. I looked at him and thought about the war and the men I had held while they bled and the city outside the window that was bleeding right now, slowly, beautifully, terribly.
"Because you deserve to exist," I said. "However you exist. Whoever you are. Inside or outside. Real or imagined. You matter."
Victor said nothing. But his hands stopped trembling.
We spent the next three weeks preparing. I used every contact I had — former patients, corrupt cops, a judge who owed me a favour and a bottle of good bourbon. Summer used Victor's mind — she studied, she planned, she memorized every detail of Harrington's operation, every name, every route, every weakness.
"You're a good soldier," Summer told me one night in my office, going through files by the light of a desk lamp that flickered like a dying star. "For a woman who claims she doesn't care."
"I care about puzzles," I said. "And you're the best puzzle I've ever had."
Summer looked up at me, and for a moment — just a moment — I thought she was going to kiss me. Or I thought I was going to kiss her. Or Victor. It was hard to tell the difference sometimes.
But she didn't. And I didn't. Because some things are too valuable to risk ruining with action.
The confrontation happened in a warehouse by the waterfront. Rain again — because of course it was raining. The kind of rain that makes everything feel like a bad movie. I had a gun. Summer had Victor's body and a mind that had survived the Somme. Harrington had men — four of them, armed, professional, indifferent.
They caught Summer off guard. Not physically — I handled the physical part, shooting the first man in the knee and the second in the shoulder and sending the third running into the fog. But the fourth man had a gun too, and he pointed it not at me but at Victor — at Summer — and said: "Last chance, Miss Lane. Out voluntarily, or I remove you the hard way."
Summer looked at me. Her face — Victor's face — was calm. Too calm. Like a woman standing at the edge of a cliff, deciding whether to jump or step back.
"Eve," she said. "I need you to do something for me."
"Anything."
"Let me go."
"No."
"If I stay, they'll kill us both. If I go — if I leave voluntarily — they might let Victor live. They might even leave him whole. Mostly."
"Mostly."
"Mostly."
I lowered my gun. My hands were shaking. Not from fear. From rage. From the knowledge that I was being asked to make the only honest choice I had ever made, and it was going to kill me — not physically, but in the way that mattered.
"I hate you," I said.
"I know," Summer said. "That's how I know you love me."
And then Victor's body went still. Summer was gone. Not killed. Not erased. Gone. Like smoke. Like a dream you can't quite remember when you wake up. Like the warmth that leaves a room when someone you love walks out and doesn't look back.
Harrington's men took Victor's empty body away. I stood in the rain, my gun useless, my heart colder than it had ever been, and watched the Los Angeles waterfront disappear into fog.
Six months later, I sat in my office on Flower Street, watching the same rain carve the same paths through the same dust, and I picked up a cigarette and lit it and stared at the city that had taken everything from me and asked for nothing in return.
Some ghosts don't haunt you. They just leave the room and take the warmth with them.
And you sit in the cold, and you learn to like the cold, and you tell yourself that feeling was overrated anyway.
And maybe you're right.
Maybe.
