The wheat was waist-high and golden, swaying in the Normandy wind like the fur on a sleeping animal, and Tommy MacAllister lay in it on his stomach with his M1 rifle across his back and his helmet pressed into the dirt beside him, and he was very alone.

The manual also said that if a paratrooper was separated from his unit, he was to link up with the nearest friendly force or resist locally as an individual. Tommy stood at the edge of the field for a long time, watching her. She poured him a glass of milk. He drank it in three large gulps. She watched him drink, and when he set the glass down, she said: "My name is Claire Beaumont. I am a member of the French Resistance. And I have a job for you."

Tommy sat in the chair and looked at Claire across the table and said: "I don't have a job for you."

"That's not what I said," Claire said. "I said I have a job for you."

"What is it?"

She reached into her apron and pulled out a folded piece of paper—small, approximately four inches by six inches, written on both sides in pencil. She set it on the table between them.

Tommy looked at it. It was a list of names. Approximately two dozen, written in French. Some names were marked with an X.

"What is this?" he said.

"Names," Claire said. "The men who betrayed us. The men who told the Germans where our safe houses were, where our weapons were hidden, where our people were hiding. The men who got my three best friends killed."

Tommy looked at the list. He looked at Claire. He said: "What do you want me to do with it?"

Claire sat down across from him. She folded her hands on the table. She looked at him with her gray eyes—gray, like the sea on a winter morning, like the metal of his M1 rifle—and she said: "I want you to take this to Lyon. Deliver it to a man named Colonel Durand. He is in charge of the Resistance cell in Lyon. He will know what to do with the list."

"Because you are an American soldier," Claire said, "and you are apparently going in the general direction of Lyon, and because I cannot go myself—the Germans are watching my house, and if I leave, they will see me, and if they see me, they will know that I am still alive, and if they know I am still alive, they will come for me, and I do not want them to come for me because I do not intend to surrender."

Tommy looked at the list. Tommy stood up. He put the rifle on his back. He said: "How do I know you're not German?"

Claire looked at him. "You don't. That's the point of war, Tommy. You never know. You only know what you choose to believe. And I choose to believe that you are a man who will do what he says he will do."

She walked to the door. She opened it. She stepped outside into the field of poppies. Tommy followed her.

They walked in silence for ten minutes, along the dirt path that wound between the wheat and the poppies, until they reached the edge of the village, where the road began.

Claire stopped. She turned to Tommy. She said: "One more thing."

"What?"

"The man on this list—the first name, Henri Beaumont. He is my brother."

Tommy looked at the name she had indicated. HENRI BEAUMONT. Marked with an X.

"Your brother betrayed you?" he said.

Claire's face did not change. "My brother did many things," she said. "Some of them were for money. Some of them were for survival. Some of them were because he was afraid. And some of them were because he believed that the Germans would win and he wanted to be on the winning side when they did. I don't know which. I don't think he knows himself. But he is on the list, and the list goes to Lyon, and Colonel Durand will decide what to do with it."

She turned and walked back into the field of poppies. Tommy stood on the road for a moment, watching her walk away, her dark dress and white apron and basket of red poppies disappearing into the wheat, and then he turned and followed the road.

He walked for two days. He ate hard bread and dried cheese that he found in an abandoned farmhouse. He drank from streams and rivers and wells. He slept in forests and barns and the back seats of abandoned cars. On the second night, he heard gunfire in the distance—artillery, probably, from the battle that was raging around the Normandy beachhead—and he lay in the dark in a barn full of hay and thought about Claire and the list and his brother Henri and the X that marked his name, and he wondered, not for the first time, what it meant to be on the right side of a war when the people on your side were doing things that felt indistinguishable from the things the other side was doing.

On the third day, he reached the crossroads. He turned left. He walked for another ten kilometers. He reached a river. He crossed the river. He continued southwest.

And on the seventh day, he met George.

George was a deserter—a twenty-nine-year-old man from Chicago who had been assigned to the 101st Airborne but had jumped from a C-47 two days before Tommy and had gotten lost and had wandered into enemy territory and had decided, rather than linking up with Allied forces, that he would rather not be part of the war at all.

"Because someone asked me to take a list there."

"A list of what?"

"Names."

George was silent for a long time. Then he said: "I'm going too."

"Because Lyon is west, and west is the direction I was told to go, and I'm tired of walking in circles."

Tommy looked at him. He said: "Okay."

They walked together for three days. On the third day, they met Elise.

Elise was nineteen, a farmer's daughter from a village that had been burned by the Germans two weeks before. She was standing in the ashes of her village, looking at the charred remains of her house, her hands empty at her sides, her face expressionless.

Claire was waiting for them at the edge of the city.

She was standing on a hill that overlooked Lyon—stood there, in fact, at the exact spot where Tommy and George and Elise could see her from the road, a dark figure in a dark dress and white apron, her hands at her sides, her face turned toward them.

Tommy walked up the hill. He reached the top. He stood in front of Claire.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the list. It was still there. He had not lost it. He had not opened it. He had not looked at the names since Claire had put it in his pocket seven days ago. But he knew, without looking, that Henri Beaumont's name was at the top, marked with an X.

He handed the list to Claire. She took it. She looked at it. She looked at Tommy.

"You found it," she said.

"I didn't lose it," Tommy said.

Claire nodded. She put the list in her apron. She looked at George and Elise, who were standing at the bottom of the hill, watching them.

"This is Colonel Durand's address," she said, handing Tommy a folded piece of paper. "Give it to him. Tell him Claire sent you. Tell him the list is complete. Tell him—" She paused. "Tell him I am still alive."

Tommy took the paper. He said: "What about you?"

"I have work to do," Claire said. "Work that you and George and Elise cannot do. Work that requires me to stay here, in this city, in this house, in this field of poppies."

Tommy looked at her. He wanted to say something—something that would convey everything he felt: the gratitude, the respect, the admiration, the fear, the hope, the despair, the exhaustion, the stubborn, irrational, undeniable belief that this woman—this French woman with her gray eyes and her list of names and her field of poppies—was the bravest person he had ever met.

But he could not. He was twenty-three years old, from a town outside Pittsburgh, and he had been in war for three months, and he had not learned how to say the things that mattered.

So he said: "Okay."

And he turned and walked down the hill with George and Elise and the weight of a list that he had carried for seven days and the knowledge that somewhere behind him, on a hill overlooking Lyon, a woman was standing in a field of poppies, waiting.

They delivered the list to Colonel Durand three days later. Durand was a small, sharp-featured man with a face that looked like it had been carved from granite, and he read the list in silence, his expression never changing, and when he finished, he set the list down on his desk and looked at Tommy and said: "Thank you, Sergeant MacAllister. Your service will be noted."

Tommy said: "Is that all?"

Durand looked at him. "What did you expect?"

Tommy thought about saying: I expected you to tell me what happens to the names on the list. I expected you to tell me whether Henri Beaumont lives or dies. I expected you to tell me whether Claire is safe or whether the Germans will come for her and whether she will be ready.

But he didn't. He was twenty-three years old, from a town outside Pittsburgh, and he had learned, in the seven days since he had jumped from the C-47, that some questions do not have answers and some answers do not matter and the only thing a person can do is carry the questions and the answers and the not-knowing for as long as they are able and then lay them down, finally and inevitably, when they die.

So he said: "Nothing." And he walked out of Durand's office and into the street and into the rest of his life.

He would not survive the war. He would die three weeks later, on the edge of a forest outside Hürtgen Forest, Germany, taking a bullet for a man named Henderson who would survive the war and live to be eighty-seven and tell the story of how Tommy MacAllister had pushed him out of the way of a German machine gun bullet and died in his arms, twenty-three years old, with a look on his face that was not pain but surprise—the surprise of a man who had not expected to die, or perhaps the surprise of a man who had expected it and was not ready.

But that is a different story. This story ends here, on a street in Lyon, on a day in July of 1944, with a twenty-three-year-old American paratroomer walking away from a Colonel's office and into the rest of a life that he would not live.

He walked toward the train station. He thought about Claire. He thought about the list. He thought about Henri Beaumont's name at the top, marked with an X.

He thought: I carried this for seven days. I did not look at it. I did not lose it. I delivered it.

He thought: That is enough.

And it was.
